Kazakh pianist Dina makes a welcome return to our series with four timeless sets of variations. Based on a simple violin theme, Bach’s epic Chaconne was transformed into this brilliant showpiece by Italian composer Feruccio Busoni in 1916. Also creating a dazzling display from simple elements are Mozart’s delightful variations on ‘Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star’. Schubert’s dramatic variations on his ‘Rosamunde’ theme build tension by appearing to rush towards the finale. Dina ends with Brahms’s variations on the famous Caprice by Paganini. With rich invention and startling originality, Clara Schumann referred to them as ‘witches’ variations’.

A young master with a poet’s sensibility, American pianist Eric Lu makes audiences lean in to appreciate the full magnitude of his artistry. Lu is known for patience, restraint, and a refined, delicate touch at the keyboard, and returns after his rapturously received Cal Performances debut during the 2021–22 season. The Esmé Quartet, one of the world’s most watched young ensembles, is celebrated for its depth and maturity, as noted by the Süddeutsche Zeitung. Formed in 2016 at the Hochschule für Musik in Cologne, Germany, the quartet comprises four musicians who have been friends since their youth: Wonhee Bae and Yuna Ha on violin, Dimitri Murrath on viola, and Ye-Eun Heo on cello. The ensemble has rapidly gained a worldwide reputation for its exceptional artistry and achievement, winning the prestigious Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition in 2018, along with several other accolades.

The Esmé Quartet is acclaimed for its spellbinding dynamics, stylistically assured interpretations, and precision ensemble playing. Their performances are known for their warm sound and powerful stage presence, bringing together four distinct musical personalities into a cohesive, close-knit group passionately dedicated to the string quartet repertoire. The ensemble has performed at renowned venues and festivals worldwide, including the Lucerne Festival, Wigmore Hall, and the Aix-en-Provence festival, among others.

This is a vibrant and dramatic meeting of musical spirits, a true meeting of equals and a musical rapport that will see them record Bach’s complete duo sonatas in 2024. Their programme celebrates Bach, with a pairing of two of his duo sonatas which are searingly beautiful, playful and exhilarating. Schubert’s timeless Fantasie in C is offset by James Macmillan’s miniature After the Tryst, fuelled by the composer’s love of the Scottish folk ballad tradition.

Ida Pelliccioli is an accomplished artist, with degrees in Italian Literature and Ancient Greek, and a teaching post at the Paris Conservatoire. Her recital takes us from the Italian Baroque to Romantic Germany, via Spain, featuring the little-known Baroque Spanish composer Blasco de Nebra, whose keyboard works foreshadow both Mozart and Schubert. Ida begins with three short sonatas from Scarlatti, followed by Mozart’s Bach-inspired fugue, and his turbulent Fantasia. The programme’s final pieces were also among Schubert’s last, full of passionate contrasts and ravishing melodies.

Love courses through this programme of chamber music delicacies played by two principal string players from the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra, joined by the eminent American pianist Russell Hirshfield. When Shostakovich wrote his first piano trio, he was smitten; his longing for a fellow student peers out from behind the trio’s yearning melodies. ‘You won’t have heard such a beautiful trio from me,’ wrote Brahms to his publisher of his own C major trio, a work that could easily sweep you off your feet. Reena Esmail wrote her own piano trio Saans as a wedding gift for a close friend, while the sublime slowness of Schubert’s nocturne for piano trio could easily accompany a tryst. No less beauteous is Jennifer Higdon’s trio exploring whether colours and their shades can be reflected in music.

There’s entrancing melody courtesy of Schubert’s elegant early Sonatina and Fauré’s exquisite Cello Sonata, plus passion from Clara Schumann’s adventurous Romances, and bustling Parisian energy in Martinů’s rarely-heard sonata. Kuusisto brings the concert to an exuberant conclusion with music from Stravinsky’s Faustian parable of a soldier’s struggles with the Devil for his very soul – and his beloved violin.

- **Noah Bendix-Balgley:** First concertmaster of the Berlin Philharmonic
- **Shanshan Yao (Violin ’08):** Concert violinist and former member of the Pittsburgh Symphony and New York Philharmonic
- **Teng Li (Viola ’05):** Principal violist of the Chicago Symphony
- **Nathan Vickery (Cello ’13):** Cellist in the New York Philharmonic
