In an evocative program that conjures up wild landscapes from Tasmania and Manhattan turf wars, the focus is on Grammy-nominated violist Brett Deubner. A recipient of a United States Congressional Certiﬁcate of Recognition, Deubner returns to perform two world premieres written expressly for him, including one by PCSO’s own (and Portland native) Nicole Buetti. A soulful and passionate performance.

Prokofiev's first symphony, born in the modernist soundscape of the 20th century, is like a color explosion of playful rhythms and bold harmonies. Here, the young composer breaks conventions and paves the way for his own genius. In contrast, Brahms'  Symphony No. 1 rises like a colossus of the Romantic era. After a long wait and under clear Beethoven influence, Brahms forges powerful themes and dramatic tensions. Each note is a declaration of a composer's step into the symphonic tradition. The evening begins, however, with another one, namely Johan Hugosson's diploma work , Yggdrasil – the tree of life.
