Get ready for a night of sonic fireworks and bold musical colour at Slavic Virtuosity: Prokofiev & Mussorgsky. Conductor Thomas Leduc-Moreau leads the NSO through a program brimming with passion and power, starting with Valentyn Silvestrov’s “Silent Music”, a haunting and meditative gem that whispers its emotional depth. The evening’s centrepiece features world-renowned cellist Stéphane Tétreault in Sergei Sergeyevich Prokofiev’s brilliant Symphonie Concertante, op. 125—a virtuosic tour-de-force that’s equal parts elegance and electricity.

Then, prepare to be dazzled by Modest Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, in the shimmering orchestration by Ravel—a vivid, musical stroll through an imaginary art gallery that bursts with character and drama.

Sweden's Radio Symphony Orchestra meets Ukrainian musician colleagues on Ukraine's Independence Day. We will feel the presence of Ukrainian folk music, including in the newly composed Reflections on a Folk Song by Leonid Desyatnikov, but also experience music that borrows tones from completely different times and places, as in the modern classic Der Bote , where Valentin Silvestrov weaved together music by Mozart with a contemporary tonality. The music knows no borders, but the heart of this concert is in Ukraine.

This trio of works shines a light on some of the world premieres that PNB’s New Works Initiative has created in recent years. Donald Byrd’s haunting Love and Loss premiered in 2019, Alexei Ratmansky’s stunning tribute to his homeland of Ukraine, Wartime Elegy, followed in 2022, and inventive Australian choreographer Danielle Rowe will create something brand new for PNB dancers this November. Come bask in the glory that is new works at PNB!

Gabriella Teychenné’s music-making has been described as ‘radically passionate’ and the programme she presents for her debut will show that to the full. The string pieces by Russian émigrée Victoria Borisova-Ollas and Ukrainian Valentin Silvestrov are emotionally charged, whilst Nicholas Maw conjures up vivid pictures inspired by illustrations of the famous 11th century Persian epic story, Shahnama. Finally, we hear a world premiere from the 2022 Rushworth Composition prize-winner, Christopher Cook.

The tranquility of the English countryside in The Banks of Green Willow, Silvestrov's serene and meditative prayer for Peace in Ukraine, and the sacred a cappella choruses of The Peaceable Kingdom lead us to Haydn's powerful and climactic choral work. Widely acknowledged as a call for peace, the jubilant finale reflects strength and hope.
