Peter Boyer’s American Mosaic, a newly commissioned work, weaves together images by renowned photographer Joe Sohm, music, and the voices of America in a powerful reflection on the nation’s past and future. The program concludes with William Dawson’s Negro Folk Symphony, composed in 1934, a masterful fusion of African American spirituals and symphonic grandeur, bringing the season to a triumphant and deeply moving close.

Tanglewood Family Concert: Family Matters

CYS will present its final season concert featuring both the Associate Orchestra and the Virtuosi and Intermezzi String Ensembles at 1:00 PM on May 18 at Smithwick Theater, Foothill College. Maestra Kati Kyme will conduct works by Gabriel Fauré, C.P.E. Bach, and Joseph Haydn with the Virtuosi String Ensemble. Haydn composed his Symphony No. 45 in 1768 during his “Sturm und Drang” (Storm and Stress) period, and it carries the subtitle “La Passione”. The Intermezzi Strings will perform works by Mozart and Schubert, as well as selections from Gustav Holst’s St. Paul Suite.

New England positively shines in newly appointed Artistic Director Mei-Ann Chen’s first concert under her new title, featuring works by two of the “Boston Six” and America’s first great composers, Lowell, Massachusetts born George Whitefield Chadwick, and Henniker, New Hampshire born Amy Beach. Chadwick’s exhilarating ‘Jubilee’ from Symphonic Sketches sets the tone, with the composer’s unique energy and nod to Dvorak. The first-ever piano concerto written by an American woman follows; the Piano Concerto in C-sharp minor, Op. 45 composed by Amy Beach and premiered by Boston Symphony Orchestra. Emotional swells and turbulent aural waves of passionate sound spin a story that, according to the composer, is a romantic autobiography. Juxtaposed against these works is a cornerstone of Western music – Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, with its unforgettable four-note opening motive seemingly representing FATE knocking on the door!

The University Singers Club at the University of Florida College of the Arts is proud to present a free semi-staged concert production of George W. Chadwick and Robert Ayres Barnet’s comic opera, Tabasco March 30, 2024, at the University Auditorium beginning at 7:20 PM.

After a 13-year hiatus, the COS is proud to have pianist Robert Thies return to Central Oregon performing Beethoven’s Fourth Piano Concerto. Robert, a Gold Medal Winner at the International Prokofiev Competition in Russia, has been described by the LA Times as “a pianist of unerring warm-toned refinement, revealing judicious glimmers of power.” The rousing “Jubilee” from American composer George Whitefield Chadwick’s Symphonic Sketches will open the second half of the concert followed by the iconic Firebird Suite, the composition that launched the storied career of twentieth-century musical pioneer, Igor Stravinsky.

We continue our exploration of American music with An American Tapestry, conducted by Fernanda Lastra. From the brilliant orchestral colors of Garrop to the lyrical beauty of Barber’s Violin Concerto, this program highlights the expressive breadth of the American symphonic tradition. The orchestra also explores the foundational sounds of early American symphonist Chadwick and the evocative landscapes of Dvořák’s American Suite. The program concludes with the joyful rhythms and infectious energy of Bernstein’s On the Town Dances, bringing this musical journey through imagination, humor, dance, and expression to a vibrant close.

Step into the sweep of a great city and the intimacy of a singular voice. Keith Lockhart leads Vaughan Williams’ Symphony No. 2, “A London Symphony,” a richly detailed portrait that moves from bustle to reflection to open sky. Double bass virtuoso Xavier Foley takes center stage in his own Soul Bass Concerto, offering a rare chance to hear the instrument’s full range, from deep resonance to agile lyricism. With Chadwick’s “Jubilee” setting the tone, the program pairs American color with British grandeur in music that feels both personal and panoramic.

We’re painting a picture with sound under the baton of Guest Conductor and University of Iowa Alum, Fernanda Lastra. Starting out with George Whitefield Chadwick’s Jubilee Overture, who’s accompanying poem begins by loudly stating “No cool gray tones for me!” Then, in homage to Lastra’s Argentinian roots, Luis Gianneo’s Le Tarco en Flor captures the essence of the vibrant purple blooms of the Jacaranda tree. Orchestra Iowa’s own Principal Clarinet, Christine Bellomy, brings the dark emotions and rhythms of Oscar Navarro’s Clarinet Concerto No. 1 to life before we end the program with the ironically happy melodies of Brahms’ Symphony No. 2.
