And now for something completely different. Our series of intimate afternoon concerts continues with the duo of Section Principal Flute, Rachel Holt, and regular guest harpist Lucy Nolan. This combination of instruments makes for a particularly ethereal and otherworldly sound – great taking a pause from your day and letting the sounds wash over you.

We have a combination of music written especially for flute and harp, and arrangements of well-known pieces, with Rachel and Lucy providing insights into the composers and music throughout the performance. You might not have heard of Pearl Chertok, Jacques Ibert or Marc Bethomieu, but they really were harp specialists and knew how to write for the instrument. But for more familiar sounds we have flute and harp arrangements of Chopin’s famous Minute Waltz and Ashokan Farewell by American folk musician Jay Ungar, based on a Scottish lament.

And, of course, familiar Christmas melodies also put us in the mood for the festive season. That's why the MDR Children's Choir is touring with concerts, especially in the run-up to Christmas. For many years, it has been a tradition for the MDR Children's Choir to awaken anticipation of Christmas in its broadcast area with cheerful, contemplative songs.

In the program, we have tried to collect the most beautiful Christmas melodies and the most famous Christmas songs. Everything from Sibelius' Christmas Carol, Koppången and Klang min vackra bjällra , to Sleigh Ride and Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, which are also included in the program. To help us, we have Norrköping-born Olle Persson as soloist and the choirs Bel Canto and Musikaliska Sällskapets Kammarkör. It almost couldn't get better. Here you really get the chance to fill up on all the energy and Christmas spirit needed for the holidays.

The opening words of Gabriel Fauré's Cantique de Jean Racine evoke this year's theme for the Summer Music in City Churches festival, and his timeless, ethereal setting of the Requiem mass is the first of the three which form the pillars of the festival ("may light perpetual shine upon them"). Both of these much-loved works are performed in the orchestration by Sir John Rutter, alongside his own 'Suite Antique' and a pair of colourful dances by the master of impressionism, Debussy.

Bob Chilcott A Little Jazz Mass
Described by The Observer as “a contemporary hero of British Choral Music”, Bob Chilcott is one of today’s most widely performed composers of choral music. This programme will feature his highly effective setting of the Latin Missa Brevis in which Chilcott’s jazz influences are clearly referenced. It is soulful music drawn from many different jazz traditions, including ‘Swing’ and the ‘Blues’. A Little Jazz Mass received its premiere in St Louis Cathedral, New Orleans in 2004 and is one of Chilcott’s most popular and well-loved works. The Ulster Consort is very proud to call Bob Chilcott its Vice Patron.

He was recently appointed as the new Artistic Director of the Hopewell Valley Chorus (Hopewell, New Jersey). Mr. Clissold recently served as the Artistic Director of The Celebration Singers (Cranford, New Jersey). As a baritone, he is a founding member of the professional New York based ensemble, Manhattan Chorale. He performs regularly in renowned venues such as Carnegie Hall and has sung numerous roles in oratorios, masses, and operas. He boasts frequent appearances with the Battle Creek (MI) Symphony Orchestra and Butler University (IN) Symphony and is sought after as a clinician and adjudicator in Michigan, Indiana, New Jersey, and New York. Sir John Rutter returns to Oxford for another Christmas celebration in the company of the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra, Merton College Choir and the Choristers of Winchester Cathedral. Sir John's musical fable Brother Heinrich's Christmas forms the centrepiece of a programme that features carols and Christmas music old and new including some of Sir John's own carols, and as ever the audience has the opportunity to sing along with the choir and orchestra in classic Christmas hymns.

The Requiem by John Rutter is a musical setting of sections of the traditional Latin Requiem with additional psalms and verses in English from the Bible. He is known for his accessible and melodious writing and his works are filled with beautiful and memorable passages. His compositional style has been influenced by English, French, and American music, as well as composers such as Gabriel Fauré and Johannes Brahms. His Requiem was completed in 1985 and is dedicated to the memory of his father. Rutter wrote, “I wanted to write: intimate rather than grandiose, contemplative and lyric rather than dramatic, and ultimately moving towards light rather than darkness.”

Our Holiday Pops Concert returns as a beloved family favorite, featuring the Cape Ann Symphony Chorus under the joyful direction of Brittany Betts. This festive celebration brings seasonal magic through multiple performances filled with warmth and cheer. The program sparkles with Leroy Anderson's joyful Christmas Festival and a gorgeous arrangement of the timeless Greensleeves. Tchaikovsky's beloved Nutcracker Selections transport audiences through the enchanted world of Clara and her Prince with favorites including the spirited Trepak, elegant Waltz of the Flowers, and charming character dances. The concert celebrates the Festival of Lights with both Custer's grand Chanukah Festival in full orchestra splendor and Holcomb's Festive Sounds of Hannukah. Broadway magic shines through John Higgins' delightful Christmas on Broadway arrangement, while Sebesky's playful Christmas Scherzo and Pinkzebra's tender Winter Lullaby add moments of whimsy and reflection. The program also features John Rutter's exquisite choral work What Sweeter Music and the jubilant Rejoice! How Great Our Joy. The concert concludes with a joyous sing-along that brings the entire audience together in the spirit of the season — a perfect way to celebrate the holidays with your community!

This grand choral concert takes audiences on a winter journey blending celebration and enchantment. From the first notes of Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel to Rimsky-Korsakov’s captivating Christmas Eve, the music transports the audience to a magical world. Berlioz, Vaughan Williams and Price add pastoral warmth and comfort with timeless melodies like “Greensleeves.” With Mendelssohn and Rutter, audiences are enveloped in radiant music that celebrates the spirit of Christmas.

The Choir of Clare College, Cambridge and conductor Graham Ross return to Sinfonia Smith Square for the final concert in their year-long celebration of Clare College’s 700th anniversary.  Traditional carols and Christmas motets and anthems, including those from the time of the College’s founding such as Angelus ad virginem and In dulci jubilo sit alongside more recent additions to the canon, including works written especially for the Choir by the late Sir John Tavener, former Director of Music Sir John Rutter, and Cecilia McDowall.  The programme also includes Cheryl Frances-Hoad’s The Nativity, commissioned for the College’s 700th anniversary.
