This year the concert kicks off with a specially-commissioned Fanfare by Composer-in-Residence, Owain Park and Vaughan Williams’ beautiful ‘Fantasia on Christmas Carols’ with additional readings from the Christmas story. Audience carols including ‘Hark the Herald Angels Sing’ and choral classics such as Holst’s ‘On Christmas Day’, Rutter’s ‘What Sweeter Music’ as well as our arrangement of ‘O Holy Night’ also feature. The concert also includes the winning piece from this year’s LCS Carol Competition.

Sir John Rutter returns to Oxford for another Christmas celebration in the company of the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra, Merton College Choir and the Choristers of Winchester Cathedral. Sir John's musical fable Brother Heinrich's Christmas forms the centrepiece of a programme that features carols and Christmas music old and new including some of Sir John's own carols, and as ever the audience has the opportunity to sing along with the choir and orchestra in classic Christmas hymns.

Each December we celebrate the holidays with music both contemplative and joyful, leaving audiences with a song in their heart and the warmth of the season. Our upcoming Holiday Pops concerts include the orchestra and VSO’s 80-voice chorus leading three sing-a-longs and performing much-loved music by John Rutter, LeRoy Anderson, and George Frederic Handel. The lineup includes Edvard Grieg's "Holberg Suite 1884," Ralph Vaughn Williams' "5 Variants of Dives and Lazarus w/Harp 1939," Antonio Vivaldi's "Mandolin Concerto in D 1725" featuring the talented Robert Phillips as the mandolin soloist, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's "Divertimento in D Major 1776," and John Rutter's "Suite Lyrique 1979" with Belle Coty enchanting us on the harp. The concert will also feature additional pieces, promising a runtime of one hour filled with beautiful music.

We are thrilled to showcase guest artists Belle Coty, a versatile harpist known for her wide-ranging contributions to the music community, and Bob Phillips, a renowned mandolin player, author, composer, and educator. The Requiem by John Rutter is a musical setting of sections of the traditional Latin Requiem with additional psalms and verses in English from the Bible. He is known for his accessible and melodious writing and his works are filled with beautiful and memorable passages. His compositional style has been influenced by English, French, and American music, as well as composers such as Gabriel Fauré and Johannes Brahms. His Requiem was completed in 1985 and is dedicated to the memory of his father. Rutter wrote, “I wanted to write: intimate rather than grandiose, contemplative and lyric rather than dramatic, and ultimately moving towards light rather than darkness.”

An accomplished conductor, Brian Clissold has had great success working with choirs, and more specifically, specializing in community-based choirs throughout the Midwest. He was recently appointed as the new Artistic Director of the Hopewell Valley Chorus (Hopewell, New Jersey). Mr. Clissold recently served as the Artistic Director of The Celebration Singers (Cranford, New Jersey). As a baritone, he is a founding member of the professional New York based ensemble, Manhattan Chorale. He performs regularly in renowned venues such as Carnegie Hall and has sung numerous roles in oratorios, masses, and operas. He boasts frequent appearances with the Battle Creek (MI) Symphony Orchestra and Butler University (IN) Symphony and is sought after as a clinician and adjudicator in Michigan, Indiana, New Jersey, and New York. Clissold was recently named Conductor-in-Residence with Manhattan Concert Productions.
