»Die Fledermaus« is considered the ultimate operetta, full of waltzes, polkas, who-with-whom, champagne, mistaken identity, masquerading and fraternization. How refreshing it is that Gabriel von Eisenstein, eager to have some quick fun with young ladies before he goes to prison, is repaid tit-for-tat by his wife Rosalinde: with her old vocal coach Alfred. Only a tenor could be so audacious! Adele, the maid, has high aspirations, but first she attends the ball as Miss Olga in the dress of her gracious lady. And this is how all the lovable characters, who are not too concerned with the truth, converge at the ball of Prince Orlofsky. He is young, rich, bored – such a retaliatory action by Dr. Falke is just what he needs. The latter has a score to settle with Eisenstein: "This is the way the bat takes revenge!" Orlofsky's ball becomes a stage. And in the end they all meet again in prison. Here Herr von Eisenstein learns who his close pal, the Chevalier Chagrin, really is and what the doppelganger in his dressing gown is all about. Eisenstein's acquittal is celebrated with champagne, because after all, he alone was to blame, was he not?

As tradition dictates, the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra rings in the New Year with a musical journey to Vienna. For 2026, the celebration begins in Spain, with guitarist Juan Manuel Cañizares performing Joaquín Rodrigo’s melancholic Concierto de Aranjuez, a jewel of the classical guitar repertoire. Manuel de Falla’s vibrant Spanish folk dances follow, setting the stage for a Viennese festivity. Then the Viennese party really erupts, because waltzes and polkas and Johann Strauss Jr.: this belongs to New Year as much as fireworks and bubbles!

Ringing in the New Year with a concert has long been considered good form in Austria. Wolfgang Hentrich and the German String Philharmonic have already celebrated numerous successes on the Austrian concert stage and, together with the magnificent pianist Rafał Blechacz, invite you to a joint kick-off for 2026. The program is based on the motto "Con anima!" – when composers want to hear their works played this way, they desire a particularly emotional expression, a "soulful" way of making music. And this New Year's program is soulful through and through. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart returned to Salzburg from Italy with his father shortly before Christmas 1771, brimming with new ideas and impressions he had brought back from the south. He soon composed three divertimenti – pure light music – for his new employer in Salzburg, Prince-Archbishop Colloredo. The first Divertimento, K. 136, became particularly famous, opening cheerfully with an elegantly floating first movement. It is no surprise that the melody is one of the best known from Mozart's pen. After this introduction, we are on our way to Paris; the city on the Seine was also the destination of the 20-year-old Frédéric Chopin when he premiered his Piano Concerto in E minor in October 1830. The concert was a musical farewell to his Polish homeland, which the composer shares with the piano virtuoso Rafał Blechacz. For more than 20 years, the young pianist has been a fixture in the international concert scene, not only as a proven Chopin expert – these joint appearances with the German String Philharmonic are already their second collaboration. And finally, a New Year's Concert can also offer a colorful bouquet: in the second half of the program, Wolfgang Hentrich and the String Philharmonic dedicate themselves to a rich selection of the most popular orchestral pieces by Vivaldi, Smetana, Dvořák and the Strauss dynasty, which provide an atmospheric round-off to the start of the year. To take revenge on his friend Eisenstein, Dr Falke, alias the bat, orchestrates a misunderstanding with Prince Orlofsky. A marquis and a chevalier, a countess and budding artists meet here for a raucous party. Glasses clink, relationships are strained, there is loving, lying and dancing. “Blame it on the champagne, tra la la la la !” That’s the half-truth that the protagonists in Johann Strauss’s THE BAT sign up to at the end of a drink-fuelled night of mistaken identities and erotic escapades. But alcohol is only partly to blame; the confusion is largely due to the wiles of the humiliated Dr Falke, who was once exposed to small-town ridicule dressed in the costume of a bat and is now seizing his chance to avenge himself on his ‘good pal’, bon vivant Gabriel von Eisenstein. And so it is that the maid disguises herself as an actress, the wife as a Hungarian countess and Eisenstein himself as a French marquess and off they trot to Prince Orlofsky’s masked ball. That they end up bewailing their fate in jail early the next morning is less down to champagne than to the natural course of events. In THE BAT Johann Strauss pulled off a work that proved to be the prototypical Viennese operetta, bursting with waltzes and polkas and oozing wicked irony. Inspired by Offenbach’s opéras buffes from Paris, Strauss’s work was merciless in the way it held up a mirror to the bourgeois salon-going public - and many audience members recognised themselves in the absurd antics onstage.

The operetta A Night in Venice, composed in 1883, drew on the overflowing enthusiasm that Vienna held for the Serenissima — an affection that reached another peak with the opening of the “Venice in Vienna” theme park in the Prater in 1895.

The plot revolves around the pleasure-seeking Duke of Urbino, a notorious womanizer, who wishes to take advantage of the Carnival season to pursue a romantic conquest under the cover of colorful masks and disguise… Specifically, the Duke sets his sights on Barbara, the wife of Venetian senator Delaqua. Several schemes — some aiming to thwart the Duke’s plan, others to support it — intersect and clash, and in the end, the Duke finds himself facing not one, but three Barbaras!

It is probably the most popular, but certainly the most Viennese of all operettas: Johann Strauss' immortal Fledermaus. Parties that get out of hand, erotic mix-ups, conspiracies, intrigues and a large portion of schadenfreude: the climax of the classical Viennese operetta era offers ambiguous entertainment in waltz rhythm. And if the social façade crumbles too much, you can still blame everything on the effect of champagne. 

The Volksoper is considered the most Viennese opera house in the city. So it is not surprising that Johann Strauss' masterpiece is practically family silver here. No work has ever been performed more often at the Volksoper. At the beginning of Lotte de Beer's directorship, the performance was carefully refreshed, and a female "Frosch" has since provided a fresh look at a well-known piece.

Kick off our 72nd season with a thrilling mix of classical masterpieces like Bernstein’s Candide Overture, Sibelius’ The Swan of Tuonela, and Saint-Saëns’ Danse Macabre, plus iconic film scores and a nostalgic journey through ’50s and ’60s hits, including a Beach Boys medley. What does this calculation result in: 60 fingers plus 270 keys plus 600 buttons plus virtuosity times six? Clearly, it's a more than explosive mixture of sounds. Martynas Levickis's trademark is to seek out musical partnerships where the sonic distance from the accordion is as great as possible. But with the Ensemble Axos, he relies entirely on his own family of instruments. He founded the ensemble with five outstanding accordion colleagues, and together they demonstrate how easily a six-piece can compete with even a large orchestra. If an accordion on its own already has a seemingly endless palette of colors up its sleeve, then this special six-pack delivers even more beguiling sonic surprises. Johann Strauss composed over 500 waltzes, polkas, and mazurkas over the course of his life—not for nothing is he nicknamed the "Waltz King." But he not only composed dance pieces; he also wrote thrilling operettas for the stage, including "Die Fledermaus." To mark his 200th birthday, the program includes waltzes and arias from the popular operetta, as well as other works with dance-like, celebratory verve by Alexander von Zemlinsky and Richard Strauss. Accompanied by a magnificent fireworks display, Vinzenz Praxmarer and the Divertimento Viennese Orchestra will transform the lakeside palace of Monrepos into an atmospheric, expansive Viennese ball scene of the fin-de-siècle.

Dylan F. Thomas’s Die Fledermaus is strutting into the El Portal Theatre in North Hollywood for one glittering weekend — June 21 & 22, 2025!

El Portal Theater

Arguably the greatest operetta of all time, Die Fledermaus gets the royal treatment with gorgeous 1920s designs, an all-star ensemble cast, and a witty English translation. This new production, sparkling with melody, mischief, and masquerade, will be directed by Paul Curran and designed by Gary McCann, with lighting design by Johanna Town. Paul Daniel conducts the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.

Prince Orlofsky is throwing the costume party of the century, and everyone is determined to be there. Dr. Falke invites his friend Eisenstein for a gentleman’s night out on the town. Little do they know that Eisenstein’s wife, Rosalinde, and her maid, Adele, each have their own mischievous plans. What starts as a harmless prank soon escalates into an epic battle of the sexes, filled with disguises, flirtations, and comedic deceptions. No matter how the evening ends, one thing is for sure — you can blame it on the champagne!

It has an inherent majestic strength: Camille Saint-Saëns' 3rd Symphony, composed in 1886 - one of the first non-sacred organ works for orchestra. With Saint-Saëns' powerful sounds, the Philharmonie Salzburg will first make the Stadtkirche Hallein tremble on this evening, before paying homage to Johann Strauss on his 200th birthday in the second part of the concert, together with the lower school choir of the Musisches Gymnasium Salzburg.
