You might raise your eyebrows hearing Minors Alterations by David Lovrien, who called his medley “Christmas Through the Looking Glass.” Our concertmaster Christina Wu will indulge you with the gorgeous Meditation from the Opera Thais by Jules Massenet and stormy Winter from Vivaldi’s Seasons. Additionally, per CSO tradition, we are proud to welcome some of the best high school music students in our area to perform side-by-side with the orchestra during the Sunday Holiday Concert.

Music Director Peter Oundjian continues his tradition of ending the season with glorious music by Mahler. The composer built his Fourth Symphony around his own song “The Heavenly Life,” which borrows text from a Bavarian folk poem. “The angelic voices gladden our senses,” the poem proclaims, “so that everything awakens for joy.” Mahler’s sunniest symphony invokes bells, harp, and woodwinds; in keeping with the lightness of the work, Mahler insisted the soprano perform “with childlike, cheerful expression;” soprano Karina Gauvin joins the Festival in this role. This final concert of the season includes Ravel’s colorful twist on the Shéhérazade tales — again featuring Gauvin’s “glowing, flexible tone” (Opera News) — and the overture to Strauss’ most famous and farcical operetta, Die Fledermaus.

With a heritage as rich as a Sachertorte, tonight’s concert gorges on the finest musical ingredients of Austria’s capital. Beethoven’s symphonies are cornerstones of the orchestral world – our very own sponge cake base! The Seventh Symphony is a feast of rhythm and dance, although Beethoven came from Spanish stock and maybe this just got the better of him when he cooked it up – expect more barnstorming than boleros. A hundred years on, the music of Berg stirred from the melting pot of 1900s Vienna. His Violin Concerto is, by turn, angelic and angst-ridden, one of the most innovative pieces ever written for the instrument. ‘Waltz King’ Johann Strauss II provides the icing on the cake with his Emperor Waltz, with a bonus trip down the river Danube, our dance through Vienna is complete.

It is Vienna in 1874. Things have been set in motion before the curtain rises on Die Fledermaus, that most effervescent of operettas. The recipient of a practical joke while in a drunken haze after a party, it has taken young Dr. Falke three years to figure out how to get back at his friend Eisenstein for the prank. The perfect forum is provided by the outlandish Russian Prince Orlofsky, who rolls into town and invites Falke to a sumptuous party. Guests arrive under an assortment of false pretenses. Even Adele, the Eisenstein’s maid, feigns an excuse to be released from work that night so she can go to the ball, and disguises herself as a Russian actress. The party culminates in the unwitting Eisenstein flirting shamelessly with his own wife, who is in disguise as a Hungarian countess. Amidst much waltzing and champagne consumption, Eisenstein gets a taste of his own medicine, delivered in large doses by Dr. Falke.

In January 2024, if you don't go to Vienna, Vienna, the land of waltzes and lively polkas, will come to you for a New Year's concert in the purest tradition of the Austrian capital: the iconic "Blue Danube Waltz" and the famous "Radetzky March" will be part of the program... Gergely Madaras also pays homage to the rich Gypsy heritage of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire, which influenced the music of Strauss, Brahms, Liszt, and others. Two authentic Hungarian musicians, one on the violin and the other on the cimbalom, will make this "gypsy" flame burn even brighter.

A material that is as popular as it is ambivalent and evokes countless associations with one word: Casanova! Just one day after Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill had launched probably the theater sensation of the Weimar Republic with the Threepenny Opera in what would later become the Berliner Ensemble, director and choreographer Erik Charell followed suit right next door in the predecessor of the Friedrichstadtpalast. The capital’s press was enthusiastic: “Casanova is a great success. It means the resurrection of the operetta!” (Der Montag). The “electrifying music of Johann Strauss” (Berliner Tageblatt) was not only rearranged by Ralph Benatzky, but also electrified – by “the new instrument vibraphone”, as announced in the program booklet for the premiere.

For CA Festival, we are presenting Stanford alumnus and a very prominent composer of our time, William Bolcom (b. 1938) in "Celebration of New Music". Especially, we are honored to west-coast premiere the piece, Dedication (2022), by William Bolcom during our Stanford Philharmonia Fall Concert, conducted by Paul Phillips, as part of the CA Festival this year. Along with Bolcom, we have Mozart Symphony No.34 in C Major, K. 338 and Charles Griffes on our program, which Griffes’s piece, Poem for Flute and Orchestra, will be performed by Laura Futamura, a 2023 Concerto Competition Winner at Stanford University.

Don’t miss our first concert of the season, Viennese Gala, featuring Maestro George Stelluto and guest artist Robert Chen, Chicago Symphony Orchestra‘s Concertmaster. The concert features Rossini’s “William Tell Overture”, Beethoven’s “Violin Concerto”, and Johann Strauss, Jr.’s beloved waltzes, polkas, and overture for a Viennese-style celebration of the season!

The Viennese Gala Concert will take place on Saturday, October 14, 2023, at 3 pm at the Peoria Civic Center Theater.
