Cellist

Franz Peter Schubert (1797-1828) grew-up in a supportive family where his schoolmaster father, Franz Theodor Schubert, and his older brother Ignaz, provided him with musical training on the viola. From there he went on to learn to play the organ at his local parish church. Schubert’s young talent eventually earned him a scholarship placement at the Stadtkonvikt, which was the premier boarding school for commoners. While there, he also earned a place as a singer in the Imperial Court chapel. At the Stadtkonvikt, Schubert’s music theory and composition teacher was none other than the famed court composer Antonio Salieri.

Romantic guitarist Adam Cockerham joins ACO strings in a performance of the well-known Boccherini String Quintet in C, with its famous Passacaille movement. Also performed is a lively Vivaldi string concerto.

Concluding a season-long celebration of women composers, OSL presents a program of songs and piano works by Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel and her brother Felix Mendelssohn with pianist David Fung and soprano Liv Redpath, making her much-anticipated return after debuting with OSL last season.

Celebrated Canadian pianist Marc-André Hamelin joins OSL for this program dedicated to the expressive powers of the piano quintet, including Florence Price’s evocative and masterful Piano Quintet in A minor and Brahms’ Piano Quintet.

Felix showed exceptional talent as both a pianist and composer at a very young age. He gave his first public appearance as a soloist for Dussek’s “Military” Concerto at the age of nine. By the age of twelve, he was taken to give a performance of music by Bach and Mozart for the famed poet Goethe, with whom he developed a lasting friendship. Indeed, it is said that the third movement Scherzo of Mendelssohn’s String Octet in E-flat Major, was inspired by Goethe’s poem, “Walpurgis Night’s Dream”. Felix continued to develop as a composer in his youth under the tutelage of Carl Frederich Zelter.  He wrote five operas and eleven symphonies, among other works, before reaching adulthood.
