Immerse yourself in the profound emotional landscapes of Bernstein and Brahms with the Santa Rosa Symphony, under the baton of Music Director Francesco Lecce-Chong. This captivating concert series, featuring the extraordinary pianist Joyce Yang, promises an unforgettable journey through the rich harmonies of Brahms' Symphony No. 4, his final and perhaps most enchanting symphony, alongside Bernstein's Symphony No. 2, "The Age of Anxiety." This piece, a reflection on post-war sentiments, masterfully blends elements of jazz and blues, concluding with a message of hope.

The performances are scheduled to take place at the prestigious Weill Hall, Green Music Center, on February 22, 23, and 24, 2025. The concert series kicks off with a performance on Saturday, February 22, at 7:30 pm, followed by a matinee on Sunday, February 23, at 3:00 pm, and concludes with a final evening performance on Monday, February 24, at 7:30 pm. Additionally, a special Discovery Rehearsal is open for attendance on Saturday, February 22, at 2:00 pm, offering a unique behind-the-scenes look at the preparation involved in bringing these masterpieces to life.

The program for this series also includes Shuying Li's "Purple Mountains for Orchestra," further enriching the concert's exploration of American musical landscapes. Concert Conversations with Francesco Lecce-Chong, held before each performance, provide insightful context and enhance the listening experience, making this event not just a concert but an educational journey into the heart of classical music.

For its season finale concert, the UMD Wind Ensemble presents a performance of works that explore renewal and hope. Music and art can share a certain complexity and angularity. The Chinook Winds invited talented visual artist Jodi Lightner, whose work is informed by architecture, to collaborate. Music includes Gyorgi Ligeti’s Six Bagatelles for Wind Quintet and Back of the Bus by Shuying Li.

At the center of this concert is a new composition for wind ensemble by Sacramento-based composer Shuying Li titled Luminance, which the UC Davis Concert Band helped commission thanks to the Rucker Family Trust’s Endowed Fund for Concert Band Support. The composer writes of her piece, “At its core, the work addresses issues relevant to contemporary society. By exploring themes of hope and despair, inclusion and exclusion, and power and powerlessness, the piece seeks to provide a platform for reflection and conversation. Through its use of evocative tonalities and dynamic contrasts, Luminance aims to inspire audiences to find strength in moments of darkness and embrace the light within themselves. Luminance will have been premiered by The President’s Own United States Marine Band in October, 2023.

Celebrate the artistry of two musical giants: Rossini’s sparkling wit and Schubert’s moving melodies. With its theatrical flair and rhythm-driven energy, Rossini’s William Tell Overture contrasts beautifully with Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony, which offers a glimpse of his profound creative brilliance and introspective lyricism. Additionally, the world premiere of Shuying Li’s concerto grosso Coping Cadences ignites the imagination while merging traditional and contemporary elements.

Join us at our “Picture Studies” concert where the University Wind Ensemble presents evocative and illuminating repertoire composed by living composers. Repertoire includes Quinn Mason’s Dallas Arts District Fanfare, Shuying LI’s Starry Ocean, Michael Daugherty’s Passicaglia in Primary Colors, and Adam Schoenberg’s Picture Studies. The 2025 Wind Band Student Concerto Competition winner will also be featured in this concert.
