At Paliesius Manor, three artists will present the concert program "Richard's Women". They will perform the music of German music innovators Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss, who created works during the Romantic and early modern periods - well-known works, but performed for the first time in Lithuania, which will reveal the portrait of a woman using the stylistic methods of these periods. The program will include opera excerpts, chamber music masterpieces, and opuses performed for violin and piano, filled with virtuosity, maturity, and feminine sensitivity.

Guest artist François Leleux joins the woodwind section for an afternoon of tuneful gems.
Not every oboist is described as “larger than life”, but then not every oboist is the irrepressible François Leleux! Today he joins our woodwind section as first among equals, in joyous mini masterpieces by Dvořák, Gounod and the young Richard Strauss. Expect sparkling melodies and playful wit: here in the CBSO Centre, it’ll feel close enough to touch.

“Celebrate the opening of the 50th anniversary season of Chamber Music Rochester with a radiant program spanning generations of string masterworks, from the shimmering elegance of Richard Strauss’s Capriccio Sextet to the vibrant lyricism of young Spanish composer Javier Martínez Campos’s Serenata para Cuerdas. The afternoon concert culminates in the exuberant brilliance of Felix Mendelssohn’s beloved Octet, one of the most thrilling and joyous works in all chamber music.”

Adapted from the Oscar Wilde play of the same name, Salome has been thrilling and shocking audiences since its premiere in 1905. And it's easy to see why: a biblical story complete with a lecherous king, a willful princess, and an unyielding prophet is bound to get attention. Add in a power struggle, a dangerous obsession, and a dance that scandalizes audiences to this day, all set to Strauss's iconic music, and you're in for a wild and gripping performance.

Beethoven channels the raw, kinetic energy of dance in his sweeping Symphony No. 7. Crackling with heightened drama and glorious melodies, Beethoven gets the pulse racing with vibrant ballroom dances and dizzying country fiddling. “If anyone plays the Seventh,” Wagner once wrote, “tables and benches, cans and cups, the children in the cradle fall to dancing!”

Tenor Ben Bliss and pianist Christopher Allen launch our season with a program of irresistible breadth and warmth, drawing on the very finest of German and French song. The first half of the evening moves through the Romantic landscape with an assured and generous hand, offering Lieder by Schumann, Liszt, and Strauss — music that encompasses the intimacy of the salon, the grand sweep of Romantic longing, and the opulent, golden-voiced lyricism for which Strauss’s songs in particular have made tenors rejoice for well over a century. Bliss brings to this repertoire a voice of exceptional beauty — bright, focused, and capable of extraordinary refinement — along with a musician’s instinct for text and phrase that elevates every song he touches.

Daniil Trifonov, the Berliner Philharmoniker and Kirill Petrenko have already performed together on several occasions – with the press describing them as a “sonic hurricane” and an “inspired exchange”. Their collaboration continues with Brahms’s First Piano Concerto, a work in which Trifonov can deploy both his technical accomplishment and his expressive depth, from chamber-like delicacy to symphonic power. The concert’s second half features Richard Strauss’s Also sprach Zarathustra. Opening with a hymn-like sunrise, the work traces the philosopher Zarathustra’s journey to humanity: dramatic, mystical and splendorous in sound.

In turn a symbol of freedom, imagination, escape and independence, the vagabond has haunted the imagination of artists and poets as well as philosophers. In the work of Robert Schumann, he takes the form of a lonely minstrel who asks his king for a simple cup of wine; in that of Gustav Mahler, that of a saint who speaks to animals. And while Richard Strauss takes you on nocturnal wanderings, Francis Poulenc gives you a taste of a painter’s Parisian ‘vie de bohème’.

A delectable double dose of Richard Strauss, administered by two of his greatest living interpreters, soprano Renée Fleming and debuting guest conductor Santtu-Matias Rouvali. In the late-life cycle Four Last Songs, Strauss bids a tender farewell to his life in music. Along the way, he pays tribute to Pauline, his diva-soprano spouse, as well as his horn-playing father—radiant French horn solos grace each of the songs. Ein Heldenleben, the irony-infused symphonic poem that Strauss wrote in his mid-30s, is an impassioned portrait of human successes and failures, told with a flair for the dramatic.

The opera DER ROSENKAVALIER leads into the bedroom of a princess and straight into the intimate conversation with her youthful lover. Inspired by the ancient tragedy ELEKTRA, Richard Strauss and the poet Hugo von Hofmannsthal envisioned something entirely new: a comedy for music. Cheerful, light, and elegant, conciliatory yet profound in its emotions and thoughts – and, of course, Austrian in its burlesque wit while at the same time touched by melancholy reflection. Thus the authors created the famous figure of the Field Marshal's wife, Princess Werdenberg who bears the first name Marie-Thérèse for good reason and entrusted her with the leading role in the opera DER ROSENKAVALIER, premiered in 1911.

What better way to open a new season than with the Pastoral Symphony, a visionary work that opened new possibilities for symphonic music and gave it a vivid narrative voice? Honeck juxtaposes its evocation of Beethoven’s love of nature – where flowing streams and birdsong yield to the exhilaration of a thunderstorm and radiant thanksgiving – with his own Suite from Strauss’s Elektra. Set against the mythic backdrop of Mycenae in the years after the Trojan War, the Suite further distils the seething world of Elektra, Clytemnestra, and Orest through its music of psychological violence, dark obsession, and explosive orchestral brilliance.

A hypnotic blend of myth, melodrama, and psychological intrigue, Richard Strauss’s seldom heard The Egyptian Helen (Die ägyptische Helena) receives a lavish, rare U.S. staging at Bard SummerScape.

The Egyptian Helen at Bard SummerScape

Strauss and librettist Hugo von Hofmannsthal reimagine the Helen myth, set in the aftermath of the Trojan War, as a tale of doubling: a phantom Helen returns to Troy, while the real, faithful Helen has been spirited away from harm. The vengeful husband, Menelaus, surrenders to love; the unfaithful Helen renews her devotion. The opera unfolds as a rich exploration of the complexities and contradictions of love, sexuality, and marriage.

Sibelius’s Nordic lakes meet the choppy ocean waters of Betsy Jolas’s Tales of a Summer Sea, and later the dark forests and tectonic stirrings of Strauss’s Nietzsche-inspired tone-poem Also sprach Zarathustra, its blazing orchestral sunrise made famous by Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey.

"The Duisburg Philharmonic Orchestra shines with Mozart," wrote the WAZ newspaper after a "gripping evening of music" in which the Chinese-born New Zealander Tianyi Lu conducted his Requiem. And the young conductor also brought Mozart with her on her return to the orchestra's podium: this time the last of Mozart's five violin concertos. The Salzburg prodigy was not only one of the most gifted composers in music history, but also an outstanding pianist – and violinist. It's no wonder, then, that he put so much effort into the works for "his" instruments. With the Fifth Violin Concerto, he has created a particularly beautiful contribution: the melodies simply flow, the orchestral part is exceedingly rich, and the solo part is highly demanding.
