A Lasting Bond is a galloping, soaring hymn to a vanishing native culture. The sultry passion and unforgettable melodies of Carmen beguile throughout the orchestral suites drawn from Bizet’s mesmerizing masterwork. The Concert Piece for Four Horns by Robert Schumann is one of the most unique concertos in the repertoire, and one of the most thrilling especially when performed by four of music’s top players: The American Horn Quartet. “The finest brass chamber ensemble in the world,” declares the American Record Guide.

This captivating concert series, under the baton of esteemed conductor Laurence Cummings, invites audiences to explore the fundamental elements of earth, air, fire, and water through a selection of masterpieces by Rameau, Telemann, Vivaldi, and Rebel.

Laurence Cummings, celebrated music director of the Academy of Ancient Music, leads the Music of the Baroque Orchestra in this thematic journey. The program features Rameau's Suite from Naïs and Telemann's Ebb und Fluth (Water Music), showcasing the fluidity and power of water. Vivaldi's Autumn from The Four Seasons brings the earth to life with its vivid musical storytelling, while Rebel's Les Elémens offers a dynamic and imaginative depiction of all the natural elements in harmony and conflict.

Joining the orchestra is virtuoso violinist Gina DiBello, bringing her exceptional talent to Vivaldi's evocative concerto. This series promises to be a profound exploration of the natural world through the lens of baroque music's most celebrated composers.

Highlighting the event are two world premieres co-commissioned by Washington Performing Arts and the Taiwan Philharmonic: Kenji Bunch's "Transcontinental" and Ke-Chia Chen's "Witness Tree." Additionally, the program features Lou Harrison’s "Varied Trio" for Violin, Piano, and Percussion, drawing inspiration from traditional Indonesian Gamelan music, and Maurice Ravel’s Sonata No. 2 for Violin and Piano in G Major, op. 77, adding to the evening's diverse musical landscape.

This performance is part of Washington Performing Arts's The World in Our City initiative, promoting cross-cultural understanding and cultural diplomacy through the presentation of international visiting artists and globally inspired local programming. An Evening with Paul Huang

The Taiwan Philharmonic, also known as the National Symphony Orchestra of Taiwan, under the baton of Music Director Jun Märkl, is set to grace the stage at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Concert Hall. This much-anticipated performance, featuring violinist Paul Huang, will take place on Wednesday, April 19, 2023, at 8:00 PM. This event marks the debut Washington Performing Arts concert by one of Taiwan's cultural jewels, showcasing a program that celebrates the vibrancy and diversity of cultures in Taiwan.

The evening will commence with the world premiere of "Ebbs and Flows" by Ke-Chia Chen, a work co-commissioned by Washington Performing Arts, highlighting the orchestra's commitment to promoting Taiwanese composers. The program will also feature Max Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy, a violin and orchestra piece inspired by Scottish folk songs, with the talented Taiwanese-born violinist Paul Huang. The concert will conclude with a selection of works from the French classical repertoire, showcasing Maestro Märkl’s expertise in this area.

This performance is not only a showcase of Taiwan's rich musical heritage but also serves as an official ambassador of Taiwanese culture, regularly commissioning and performing new works by Taiwanese composers. It is presented in coordination with the Kennedy Center Campus Rentals Office and is not produced by the Kennedy Center.
