ECCO: East Coast Chamber Orchestra

The Orchestra Now's Resident Conductor Zachary Schwartzman returns with the orchestra to Symphony Space for another free concert. The program opens with the colorful Fanfare for Samuel Barber by David Serkin Ludwig, nephew of the late Peter Serkin. Cellist Raman Ramakrishnan, a founding member of the Daedalus Quartet, joins The Orchestra Now for "A New Day", a recent composition by the renowned Joan Tower. The concert concludes with Tchaikovsky’s emotional 5th Symphony.

Wouldn’t it be nice if a person who loved you wrote a song (or a whole concerto!) to celebrate who you are and how deeply they love you? Well, that might be asking too much for most of us, but not for our guest artist and her composer husband, Bella Hristova and David Ludwig. When they married, he wrote for her the concerto we are performing for you in this concert, and we’ve invited her to be the soloist. Let the sparks fly and feel the love on Valentine’s Weekend!

Following a heartfelt violin sonata by Schumann (who adored Bach), the East Coast Chamber Orchestra’s extraordinary ensemble offers a contemporary work inspired by Bach's stunning Chaconne, “one epic movement ... that would define string playing forever after.” Finally, with a rollicking set of variations on a Baroque dance theme, you’ll see why the New York Times declared, "ECCO delivers performances that are nothing short of electrifying." 

Program IV: Virtuosity

From Shanghai to Paris and culminating at The Great Gate of Kyiv, our season finale is a journey across the Atlantic introduced by a fanfare by composer in residence David Ludwig. Our musical travels are led by returning 2020 violin soloist Nancy Zhou whose, “incredible technique married with captivating emotional depth,” (KC Studio) is sure to stun.

From chaos to the formation of the world, RVS explores the genesis of Classical music with the versatile virtuoso pianist Anne-Marie McDermott. This concert features Composer in Residence David Ludwig’s work written especially for McDermott, alongside early works by Mozart and Beethoven. It is bound to be a stunning delight for the ears, so grab your tickets while they last. 

Masterworks 4: Haydn, Mozart, & Beethoven at SOU

Embark on a musical odyssey with renowned Finnish conductor Osmo Vänskä. The evening begins with Missy Mazzoli’s Sinfonia (for Orbiting Spheres), a swirling, celestial work inspired by planetary motion and the roiling drone of the medieval stringed instrument, the hurdy-gurdy. Henry Dorn’s powerful Transitions follows, a deeply personal tone poem reflecting on loss, transformation, and resilience.
