This work marks the start of the legendary collaboration between Richard Strauss and Hugo von Hofmannsthal. Elektra is a dark and wild work whose musical and dramatic power never ceases to fascinate. The score and main role are unique in the lyric repertoire and Strauss, a great tonal painter, immerses us in unprecedented musical and vocal violence. In a single act lasting just under 1 hour and 45 minutes, the musician traces and dissects the meanderings and flashes of radiance of the human psyche based on Sophocles’ tragedy reworked by Hugo Von Hofmannstahl. To avenge the sacrifice of her daughter Iphigenia, Queen Clytemnestra murders her husband, King Agamemnon. His murder invokes the revenge of their daughter Elektra. But it is not easy to kill your mother and vengeance sets in motion an unstoppable chain of events. Strauss puts the singers through their paces, especially the title role. Elektra is a true test of strength for the soprano and is reputed to be one of the most difficult roles in the operatic repertoire. With the extraordinary dramatic and vocal intensity she recently demonstrated in Munich, Iréne Theorin is one of the finest performers in this role today. Violeta Urmana’s Clytemnestra will be more than a match for Elektra’s power.

Audience favorite pianist Natasha Paremski returns to the Ohio Theatre with Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, a dazzling work inspired by Paganini’s Caprice No. 24 for violin. Witold Lutosławski began work on his first symphony while living in occupied Warsaw in the early 1940s. Perhaps reflecting these harsh conditions, this energetic and complex work was banned by the Polish government shortly after its premiere and was not performed again for a decade.

The second half features Strauss’s evocative and sweeping Ein Heldenleben (A Hero’s Life). A tone poem of epic proportions, Ein Heldenleben is one of the most inspiring pieces ever composed for orchestra and one of the most challenging, with substantial technical demands for every instrument.

The librettist Hugo von Hofmannsthal puts these words into the field marshal’s mouth. She knows that the affair with her young lover Octavian is finally over. So she proposes him to her cousin Baron Ochs as a messenger of love, a Rosenkavalier. Ochs has his eye on Sophie, the daughter of an up-and-coming middle-class family. His goal is to rejuvenate the old nobility with new money. What Ochs doesn't expect: Octavian falls in love with Sophie and thwarts his plans.
It is a lively rococo fantasy that Richard Strauss creates with Der Rosenkavalier and in the framework of which he creates a social study about old nobility, new money and class arrogance.

With the production of Strauss' Rosenkavalier, the internationally renowned director Georg Schmiedleitner is presenting himself for the first time in Mainz. Known for his gripping access to material and fine direction of characters, he penetrates the deepest depths of opera characters. In Strauss's masterpiece he will look behind the facade of lavish sounds and rococo gestures.

As an adventurous young lad, the composer Richard Strauss lost his way climbing up one of the Alps. Later, at the height of his compositional powers, he captured that experience in a piece of symphonic music that details eleven hours, dawn to nightfall, of a treacherous climb.  FWSO Principal Guest Conductor Kevin John Edusei will open the concert with Mozart’s Overture to Don Giovanni, which pivots from high melodrama to a more comic tone, and a rarely heard modernist treat by Austrian composer Alexander Zemlinsky.

A sun-drenched 'feel good' ballet! This is how you can easily characterize Alexei Ratmansky's internationally acclaimed Don Quixote . The Russian American top choreographer created this new version of the famous ballet classic for the National Ballet in 2010, resulting in a production that radiates pleasure, positive energy and the Spanish temperament.

This storybook program opens with Beethoven’s incisive take on the Prometheus myth and musical highlights from Humperdinck’s fairy-tale adventure, Hansel and Gretel.  Strauss’ fantastical, symphonic interpretation of Don Quixote pits the befuddled “Man of La Mancha” — represented here by Principal Cello John Sharp — against a flurry of windmills, sorcerers and bleating sheep.

Met Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin takes the podium to lead Strauss’s grand mythological epic, a tour de force for orchestra and soloists alike. A spectacular trio of sopranos lead the ensemble cast, with Elza van den Heever as the otherworldly Empress, Lise Lindstrom as the Dyer’s Wife, and Nina Stemme as the Nurse. Following recent triumphs in Wagner’s Ring cycle and Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, baritone Michael Volle is Barak, with tenor Russell Thomas as the Emperor and bass-baritone Ryan Speedo Green as the Spirit Messenger.

Strauss’ tone poem Don Juan is a bold musical retelling of the story of a serial womanizer. After alternating fiery bravura passages with more romantic themes and solos, Juan’s music sighs in death at the hands of his lover’s father. Principal Guest Conductor Kevin John Edusei conducts this program, which also features FWSO Concertmaster Michael Shih and Principal Violist DJ Cheek in Mozart’s bright Sinfonia Concertante and Sibelius’ stirring fifth symphony, about which the composer wrote: “It was as if God the Father was throwing pieces of mosaic from the edge of heaven.”

Revel in the sonic splendor of the CSO with two of its signature works: Strauss’ brash symphonic portrait of the infamous libertine Don Juan and Bartók’s exhilarating Concerto for Orchestra, a virtuosic tour de force for every instrument. Till Eulenspiegel follows the exploits of a noted trickster — but doesn’t fool around — the super virtuosic work is a freewheeling tour de force for every member of the Orchestra, beginning with a famous French horn solo. CSO Principal Horn Elizabeth Freimuth steps into the spotlight with a popular early concerto by Strauss and Debussy’s impressionistic Images create the musical equivalent of a Monet masterpiece.
