Elim Chan leads the Los Angeles Philharmonic in two enchanting and colorful orchestral favorites. Debussy’s hues in Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun are otherworldly if hazy and in watercolor. The Impressionistic atmosphere Debussy conjures exudes a fragile beauty that set off a revolution, which Pierre Boulez said “breathed new air into the art of music.” By contrast, Stravinsky paints with bold, contrasting blocks of sound. Petrushka’s Picasso-esque approach to musical color and movement sets the stage for the story of a mischievous puppet, packed with Russian folklore and misadventure.

Director Christian Lollike and composer Steingrímur Rohloff are behind this year's Melodrama, which is based on one of the most famous sacrifice stories in world history: the story of God testing Abraham's faith by asking him to sacrifice his son. It is a story that appears in both the Bible and the Quran. In the Bible, it is Isaac who must be sacrificed. In the Quran, it is Ismail. Same story, two different versions. In Christian Lollike's interpretation, the two brothers now stand face to face and try to find the truth about their shared past.

The Kammerballett Hamburger debuts in Venice. Founded in 2022 by Edvin Revazov, with the valuable support of Isabelle Rohlfs and John Neumeier, to react to the Russian-Ukrainian conflict and welcome displaced Ukrainian dancers with the language of art, the ensemble aims to connect its repertoire of classical and contemporary dance to socially relevant themes. Eight dancers will be performing at the Malibran Theatre, – accompanied on piano by Michal Bialk – in two choreographies by John Neumeier, a master at combining classical tradition and modern forms in his creations and expressing himself with a highly personal language. The first is Hamlet Connotations, to the music of Aaron Copland, testimony to Neumeier’s interest in the famous Shakespearean tragedy which was a source of inspiration to him for various dance performances over the years: starting with Hamlet Connotations (1976) up to the most recent Hamlet 21 in 2021. The second is Petruška Variations, a ballet, also from 1976, modelled on Igor Stravinsky’s Trois mouvements de Petrouchka.

British-born Sir Stephen Hough seems to defy categorisation: he is at once a pianist, composer, writer, and polymath – and a musician of extraordinary curiosity with a penchant for unconventional perspectives. This is particularly evident in Sergei Rachmaninoff’s famous Third Piano Concerto. The late-Romantic “Rach 3” is considered one of the most demanding works in the concerto repertoire and places almost superhuman demands on the soloist, which is why it is sometimes referred to as the “Concerto for Elephants” – according to one calculation, its piano part contains more notes per second than any major piano concerto. Combined with the two electrifying Stravinsky works in the second half of the concert and BRSO Chief Conductor Sir Simon Rattle on the podium, this promises to be a truly thrilling musical experience.

“The Psalms are poems of exaltation, but also of anger and judgment, and even of curses,” wrote Igor Stravinsky about his Symphony of Psalms. The work was composed during a time of personal tragedy. Tuberculosis had afflicted the composer’s family: his wife and his eldest daughter contracted the disease and eventually died from it. “It is not a work that offers easy consolation, and the God it portrays can be stern, even cruel,” says Sir Simon Rattle. Yet the symphony is equally suffused with moments of otherworldly serenity and beauty. It is framed by the sombre Chant funèbre, the otherworldly five-minute miniature Le roi des étoiles (which Debussy deemed performable only on “Sirius and Aldebaran”), and the once-scandalous classic Le sacre du printemps. An all-Stravinsky concert, rich in contrasts, colours, and surprises.

Inspired by some Russian folk tales from Afanasyev's collection, The Soldier's Tale was composed in 1918 while Stravinsky was in Morges, Switzerland, where he had taken refuge in 1914 to escape the First World War and the October Revolution that would overthrow the Tsarist regime in Russia in 1917. According to his autobiography, Chronicles of My Life , this work was conceived as a popular spectacle, to be recited, played, and danced , similar to those organized by traveling performers who traveled from city to city with limited means. For this reason, the instrumental lineup is reduced compared to the large orchestral mass of The Rite of Spring to seven performers who represent all the timbres of the orchestra, belonging to the main orchestral families in the upper registers: the clarinet and bassoon for the woodwinds, violin and double bass for the strings, cornet and trombone for the brass, and a drum kit for the percussion. These instruments are used in a rather original way, being placed in contrast with each other thanks to the exploitation and exaltation of their differences in pitch and timbre in a writing that, in some aspects, recalls the typical sound of jazz.

Igor Stravinsky’s Histoire du Soldat is a unique work: not an opera, but a play “to be read, to be played and to be danced”. Matthias Bundschuh’s staging of the music theatre can now be seen at this year’s Musikfest Berlin, following its much-lauded premiere at the 2025 Salzburg Festival in cooperation with the Salzburg Marionette Theatre. The marionettes for the production were designed by Georg Baselitz: Central to the painter, sculptor and graphic artist’s thinking was the idea that the marionettes should be created by the simplest means and reduced to their very essence.
