For 70 years now, the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra (hr-Sinfonieorchester Frankfurt) has been a regular guest at the Kassel Music Days – this time with the Russian conductor and harpsichordist Maxim Emelyanichev and a multifaceted program centered around the French Baroque. Two suites by Jean-Baptiste Lully and Jean-Philippe Rameau will be performed, as well as a Baroque-inspired ballet suite by Igor Stravinsky. Audiences can also look forward to a harpsichord concerto that is not yet 100 years old. Maxim Emelyanichev is considered a rising star of early music, approaching his work with tremendous curiosity and musical passion. He will even be at the harpsichord himself for Francis Poulenc's sparkling and witty concerto.

A harpsichord concerto that's not even 100 years old? Yes, Francis Poulenc's "Concert champêtre" spices up the Baroque sound with modern harmonies, and the liaison is a resounding success. The suite theme is also explored in a unique way in this concert: two old pieces, one new – where freshness isn't a matter of era. 20th-century France looks back to the old masters of the Baroque: The conductor who brings this special perspective to the hr-Sinfonieorchester's "Baroque+" series is Maxim Emelyanychev. The Russian is considered a rising star of early music because he approaches his work without any affectation, but with tremendous curiosity and a true musical pulse. He conducts historically informed performance ensembles as well as large symphony orchestras and says: "I want to approach the music with a fresh perspective, but with the aim of performing it as it was possible back then." In Francis Poulenc's sparkling and witty "Concert champêtre," Emelyanychev himself will be at the harpsichord; he loves leading an ensemble from the keyboard: "It's a completely different connection with the orchestra than when you're just conducting. You feel like part of the whole."

Unusual sound effects and a colorful orchestration can be heard in the suite from 1919; the master of ballet music composed the shimmering sound effects that underline the bird character in a particularly striking way. Stravinsky celebrated his first worldwide success with The Firebird.

It wasn’t just that a riot broke out at the premiere, either – the rhythmic power and primal energy of Stravinsky’s volcanic score are so explosive that over a century later, we’re still reeling from the aftershock. But then, things do tend to catch fire when Principal Guest Conductor Karina Canellakis conducts the LPO. Expect grand passions in Lili Boulanger’s sensuous Faust et Hélène, written the same year as The Rite of Spring, and dark emotion in Stravinsky’s Funeral Song.

“Back in My Day” offers a generational 300-year history of the orchestra and western music, with pieces from the early 1700s (e.g. Handel’s Water Music) to popular movie scores of the new millennium. At the performance students will see and hear how the orchestra grew in size and sound, receive interesting facts about the composers and learn how their era and environment impacted their musical works. The finale to Haydn’s “Farewell” Symphony played by candlelight, and the KSO debut of 11-year old violinist, Harin Lee, performing the finale of Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1 are some of the highlights from our historical timeline that ends with John Williams NBC Sunday Night Football Theme .

With a ballet evening that is as brilliant as it is thoughtful, the Slovenian State Ballet Ljubljana and the Klagenfurt City Theatre continue their successful collaboration of recent years. Boléro combines two classics of modern ballet composed for large orchestra with the romantic melancholy of Chopin's Nocturnes for piano. The evening takes its title from Maurice Ravel's most famous work. He created Boléro on commission from the Russian ballerina Ida Rubinstein, but in dance history, Maurice Béjart's 1961 interpretation is considered a milestone. Choreographer Renato Zanella bases his work on Ravel's fundamental musical idea of ​​the struggle for supremacy between rhythm and melody, emphasizing that the beauty of melody rarely emerges victorious in a direct confrontation with the power of rhythm.

By the time of his residency in the 2023/2024 season, Joshua Bell had won the hearts of the NDR audience with his breathtakingly singing violin tone and flawless technique—assuming they weren't already fans of this living violin legend. Now the American returns with Camille Saint-Saëns' Violin Concerto No. 3, premiered in Hamburg exactly 145 years ago (on October 15, 1880) by the then-virtuoso violinist Pablo de Sarasate. This highly romantic, passionate piece is comparatively rarely heard, although its second movement, in particular, with its irresistibly catchy melody, is likely to be singable to everyone.

The program then delves into the revolutionary world of Igor Stravinsky with the magic of the 1919 Suite from The Firebird, a work that catapulted Stravinsky to international fame, and culminates with the composer’s The Rite of Spring, a ballet score so radical in its rhythmic complexity and primal force that it caused a riot at its 1913 premiere.
