On June 29, 2024, Nabil Shehata gave his farewell performance as artistic director of the Südwestfalen Philharmonic. A search committee consisting of representatives from the orchestra, the sponsoring association, the support association, and district politicians, chaired by the district administrator, is currently deliberating on who he will pass the baton to.

The position at the helm of the State Orchestra in Siegen is undoubtedly in demand: Nearly 250 conductors from many different countries applied. "The response to the position was even greater than the last advertisement – ​​we are naturally very pleased about this. It shows that the South Westphalia Philharmonic is a sought-after orchestra and of interest to conductors from all over the world," said District Administrator Andreas Müller.

At the end of the season, the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra with chief conductor Alain Altinoglu will once again be appearing at the Festival International de Colmar with three concerts. Alain Altinoglu has been the artistic director of the traditional festival in Alsace since 2023. In the church of Saint-Matthieu, he and his orchestra, this time with cellist Gautier Capuçon and pianist Alexander Malofeev as well as hr solo trumpeter Sebastian Berner, will present works by Stravinsky, Escaich and Dvořák, Rachmaninoff and Rimsky-Korsakov as well as Brahms and Haydn.

The chicken that seems to cluck through the first movement of Haydn's Paris Symphony No. 83 in the second theme was not sighted there by the composer himself but, as is so often the case, by posterity. But with Haydn's numerous symphonies, epithets are certainly helpful. With ‘La Poule’ from 1785, Joana Mallwitz continues her Haydn focus at the Konzerthausorchester, which spans several seasons.

"Adoration of the Earth" and "The Sacrifice" – these are the titles of the two parts of "The Rite of Spring." "The work of a madman" and much more could be heard about Stravinsky's dramatic ballet after the Paris premiere in 1913 – some in the audience even became violent, because what had just been presented was completely out of step with the traditions of previous ballets.

A symphony orchestra can tell complete stories. And one of the most important storytellers was doubtlessly Igor Stravinsky. The sounds and rhythms he conjured were scandalous more than 100 years ago; today, they inspire us to imagine cinematic scenes. This is also true of the legend of the firebird with all its sophisticated colors and instruments. Before this eternally fascinating orchestral work, the Dresden Philharmonic interprets Tan Dun’s »Fire Ritual« for violin and orchestra, under the baton of its principal guest conductor Kahchun Wong and with the violinist Josef Špaček as the soloist – the former and, at the time, youngest-ever concertmaster of the Czech Philharmonic. The work was composed in 2018, inspired by ceremonial music from the Chinese court. This program, packed with legends and fairytales, begins with the »Dance of the Seven Veils« from the ballet »Salome«, composed in 1948 and reworked in 1987 by the Japanese composer Akira Ifukube, who is most well-known for his compositions for the Kaijū film genre.

One of them isn't a symphony at all - the other is one of the most famous ever! Stravinsky's wind symphony only has that name, so you can be surprised. Dvořák's symphony "From the New World", on the other hand, is music that grips and completely captivates every listener. Dvořák's 9th Symphony was written in New York. The new world may have left its mark on this music, but it remains a very Bohemian romanticism. The striking English horn solo in the Adagio contributed to its enormous popularity. It is as catchy as it is simple - and thus as far removed as possible from what Igor Stravinsky put on the woodwind and brass desks in his "Symphonies d'instruments à vent". It is rhythmically sharp, melodically cutting - and everything is brought to the point with the precision of the early 20th century. Thierry Escaich, the "Composer in Residence" of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, gets to the point when asked to classify his 2nd Cello Concerto "Les chants de l'aube": He sees it as an aria - in a style that is reminiscent of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach.

Andrey will present in his program selected etudes by Liszt, selected etudes by Chopin. In the second part, Liszt’s Spanish Rhapsody, Granados’s “Love and Death”, Babajanyan – Nocturne and Stravinsky’s Petrushka.Concert pianist Andrey Gugnin is rapidly gaining international acclaim as a passionately virtuosic performer, who possesses an “extraordinarily versatile and agile technique, which serves an often inspired musical imagination” (Gramophone). One of his recent achievements is winning the prestigious 12th International German Piano Award in 2023. In 2024, Andrey Gugnin won first place at the Classic Piano International Competition in Dubai, claiming the grand prize with a performance of Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3. In 2020, the BBC Music Magazine Awards named Gugnin the winner of the Instrumental Award for his recording Shostakovich: 24 Preludes – Piano Sonatas 1 & 2 (Hyperion). Since winning the prestigious Sydney International Piano Competition in 2016, Gugnin has gone from strength to strength in concerts and recordings which exhibit his impassioned interpretations.

A hen, a swan, the nightingale and other birds come together here: Haydn had anything but poultry in mind when he wrote his Symphony No. 83, but because of the "cackling" theme in the second movement, a clever contemporary gave the work its famous nickname - "La poule". Hindemith, on the other hand, used some themes from folk songs in his viola concerto, including in the third movement. "Seid ihr nicht der Schwanendreher" is heard there - and the concerto already had its nickname. Bernd Alois Zimmermann's Un petit rien is also ornithological. The work, which was created as radio play music, consists of seven aphoristic movements that are clearly more than just "Ein kleine Nicht". Igor Stravinsky's symphonic poem Le chant du rossignol was based on his first opera The Nightingale, which is based on the fairy tale of the same name by Hans Christian Andersen. It will not only be incredibly good, but also magical – and with Elena Schwarz at the podium and violist Tabea Zimmermann, it will be another highlight of the anniversary season!

An enchanted tale that has delighted generations. The first masterpiece of a musical genius. Music Director Andreas Delfs brings the season to a roaring close with Stravinsky’s showpiece, The Firebird. Simon Trpčeski performs Rachmaninov’s rapturous First Piano Concerto. The Times of London was astonished: “Trpčeski looks set to dominate the piano world for a long time to come.” Right from the start, the rhythms of John Mackey’s Redline Tango seduce.

In 1916, Debussy, who was suffering from illness, completed his originally planned six-part cycle with his third sonata in G minor.

The idea is said to have come to him when he was in a Paris taxi and remembered how he had heard the stentorian voices of the croupiers in the casino during a holiday in a German spa town. According to his own words, Stravinsky had been thinking for many years about composing a ballet on the subject of the card game, which he himself had a great fondness for. During his second stay in America in 1935, during which he appeared both as a conductor and as an interpreter of his own works, a commission for ballet music came at a very convenient time. »Jeu de cartes« was created as a stage play about the card game (dancers costumed as playing cards), but also as a compositional game: we encounter a wealth of quotations - Rossini's »Barber« overture, Strauss's »Fledermaus«, »La Valse« by Ravel, Beethoven, jazz, dance rhythms and quotations from Stravinsky's own works.

When Stravinsky met Dushkin, the first soloist of his Violin Concerto, he showed him a chord written on a napkin. This chord became what Stravinsky called the ‘passport’ for the work. It opens each movement, but the music that follows is different each time, from the lively opening and the melancholy Arias to the delicate finale.

When Beethoven’s final piano concerto was premiered, it was hailed by the press as “without doubt one of the most original, imaginative, most effective but also one of the most difficult of concertos.” A longtime Pittsburgh favorite, Bronfman returns to perform this most beloved of the Beethoven concertos. Highlighting the program are works inspired by an eclectic variety of beloved fairy tales.

A program distinguished by its variety opens with Balanchine’s Divertimento from ‘Le Baiser de la Fée,’ choreographed to a Stravinsky symphonic suite. Kyle Abraham’s When We Fell was originally filmed and streamed during the pandemic, and here makes its live debut. Lynne Taylor-Corbett’s Chiaroscuro, a ballet for six dancers from 1994, evokes the artistic term of its title through the interaction of light and shadow as well as diverging tempos, while Alexei Ratmansky’s Odesa features three couples, their interplay infused with hints of drama, and a corps de ballet, and is set to incidental music from the Russian film Sketches to Sunset that alternates between the ruminative and the rambunctious.

Arensky uses one of Tchaikovsky’s Sixteen Children’s Songs to capture a range of moods and character, while Stravinsky’s Concerto for Violin is a feisty, joyful romp for the instrument, full of cheerful melody and musical wit. To close, a second visit to the no-holds-barred emotional world of Rachmaninoff’s symphonies (though you’ll have to wait until 2025/26 for Symphony No.3!) and the achingly beautiful, flamboyantly majestic Second.

Dancing is liberating. When the body moves and the heart beats faster, the head becomes free and the mind calm. Igor Stravinsky's great ballet Le Sacre du Printemps in 1913 was a liberating blow for rhythm, sound and harmony - a scandal for the audience at the premiere in Paris. Maurice Ravel's symphonic poem La Valse was also commissioned by the Ballets Russes and their director Sergei Diaghilev in 1920, but was then rejected: the piece had become too dark, too destructive. Schubert freed himself from the shackles of the traditional sonata form with his F minor Fantasy in 1828; the main theme of the first movement, which returns in the last, is reminiscent of a Hungarian dance with its dotted rhythm. Now the celebrated young piano duo of the brothers Lucas and Arthur Jussen invites you to a liberating dance on 88 keys (in Schubert's version) and 176 keys - and complements the brotherly togetherness with Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's virtuoso four-hand Andante and Allegro brilliant op. 92. A celebration of rhythm and freedom.

LexPhil’s 2024/25 Season finale concert bursts forth into spring with Hector Berlioz’s Roman Carnival Overture followed by the evocative Cyber Bird Concerto by Takashi Yoshimatsu. The three movement work follows “an imaginary bird in the realm of electronic cyberspace”. Described as a ‘triple concerto’ the piece features saxophonist Jichen Zhang, pianist Meng Liu and percussionist Ben Stone.
