Through music by Modest Mussorgsky and Aram Khachaturyan, the concert ends with a suite from Igor Stravinsky's legendary Firebird , written for the Russian Ballet in Paris in 1910.

In 1824, Schubert composed his six German Dances for his student and infatuation, Countess Caroline Esterházy. The music remained hidden in a private collection for nearly 70 years until it resurfaced decades after his death. Upon rediscovery, Universal Edition commissioned Anton Webern to arrange the work for chamber orchestra, resulting in a transformation praised as a ‘miracle of precision, tonal differentiation, and glowingly shaded colours’.

On Piano Concerto in G major Ravel said: “My only wish … was to write a genuine concerto, that is, a brilliant work, clearly highlighting the soloist's virtuosity, without seeking to show profundity”. Influenced by the jazz he experienced during his short American tour, the piece brings out the concerto's playful and intricate character, echoing the spirit of Gershwin's rhythms and dreamy French impressionism. Le Tombeau de Couperin (The Grave of Couperin), a suite for solo piano transformed into an orchestral masterpiece was dedicated to friends of the composer who died fighting in World War I. A poignant remembrance, the piece draws structurally upon a Baroque dance suite.

Tonight’s programme traverses a huge range of styles and expression, from Leonarda’s baroque sonata through to the playfulness of Stravinsky and Milhaud. The ensemble has linked the theme of flight with that of exile.  All the composers in the programme have experienced a form of exile: Ukrainian composer Silvestrov and Jewish composer Milhaud were exiled by war, Russian composers Auerbach and Stravinsky sought artistic freedom, while Ustvolskaya’s constant search for an authentic voice led her to cut herself off from everyone and everything.

Prokofiev wrote that his Second Violin Concerto was the product of his ‘nomadic concert-tour existence’, which took him from Paris to Baku, Madrid to Morocco. Despite this, its melodies carry more than a hint of the composer’s homeland of Russia, to which he was about to return, along with tinges of Spain in the finale’s clicking castanets.

American pianist Clayton Stephenson’s love for music is immediately apparent in his joyous charisma onstage, expressive power, and natural ease at the instrument. Hailed for “extraordinary narrative and poetic gifts” and interpretations that are “fresh, incisive and characterfully alive” (Gramophone), he is committed to making an impact on the world through his music. In addition to being the first Black finalist at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2022, he has been named a 2022 Gilmore Young Artist, a 2017 U. S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts, and a Young Scholar of the Lang Lang International Music Foundation. Recent highlights of Stephenson’s burgeoning career include appearances with the Calgary Philharmonic, Chicago Sinfonietta, and the Fort Worth, Louisville, Lansing, and North Carolina Symphony Orchestras. He has been featured on NPR, WUOL, and WQXR, and appeared in the “GRAMMY® Salute to Classical Music” Concert at Carnegie Hall’s Stern Auditorium.

Few have conducted Carl Nielsen as much as our own honorary conductor Michael Schønwandt, and yet it is a new experience every time, because his interpretations are always exciting and far from predictable. The sixth symphony is rarely played, so a riveting experience awaits, where the composer's inner playboy really unfolds. The symphony was written by the mature Nielsen, but nevertheless leads the mind to the series of youth pictures in which Carl Nielsen twists his face and openly amuses himself with the photographer. The 6th Symphony is a charming and playful work that ranges from beautiful, singable melodies to the simple and naive to wild avant-garde.

The London Choral Sinfonia brings an evening of 20th Century performance to launch their 2024-5 season of music. Commissioned to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, The ‘Symphony of Psalms was written whilst Igor Stravinsky was in his neoclassical period. The text of three Psalms (39,4 and 150) and influences by composers including Bach create this intriguing piece. The three movement ‘Chichester Psalms’ saw Leonard Bernstein choose texts from a number of psalms to create tuneful, tonal contemporary piece, first performed in 1965. A stunning evening of music not to be missed.

Chamber Ensemble in Residence at Wigmore Hall, the Nash has been presenting an annual themed series there since 1979. The ensemble’s 2023–24 season at Wigmore Hall was entitled ‘Songs from my Homeland – Music from the Czech Lands with works by Brahms’, and the annual Nash Inventions concert on 26 March 2024 was a celebration and remembrance of the life and music of Sir Harrison Birtwistle. There was also a concert dedicated to the artists and to the music performed in the Theresienstadt Concentration Camp 1941–1945. Tragically, many of these wonderful artists were murdered at Auschwitz.

We are thrilled to be joining forces with the Ballet Idaho in October 2024 to produce a unique performance of music and dance together on stage.

The Boise Phil will open the show with a tribute to classical ballet’s most iconic composer, Tchaikovsky, performing The Sleeping Beauty Suite.

In the second act, we will see the music take physical form with two very different choreographic and musical compositions. Opening the act is Terence Marling’s Twice  (Once) set to the gorgeous music of contemporary composer Anna Clyne’s Within Her Arms. This is a subtle, yet stirring piece that contemplates the afterlife, drawn from very personal experiences of both composer and choreographer.

With conductor Andrey Boreyko we turn our ears to the East. With his fantastic Scherzo, the Czech Josef Suk, student and son-in-law of Antonín Dvořák, created an orchestral work that is particularly lively - and in no way inferior in expressiveness to the following Divertimento from Stravinsky's ballet "The Kiss of the Fairy".

While hunting for the Firebird, Prince Ivan ends up in the garden of a magician, in whose magic tree he discovers the golden plumage. As a price for his freedom, the bird gives the prince a magic feather that will summon him when in danger. Igor Stravinsky tells how Ivan uses it and what the magician's dance of hell is all about in his ballet music "The Firebird".

The "Norwegian Dances" sound no less spirited, for which Edvard Grieg used the popular Sinklar March and three traditional bridal dances of young men. This is somewhat similar to the "Slavonic Dances" by Antonín Dvořák, whose 7th Symphony will open the concert.
