The theme of the 2025/26 Orchestra Unwrapped concerts is centered around the history of the Philharmonia Orchestra, which was founded in 1945 by Walter Legge and celebrates its 80th birthday in 2025. Legge worked for a company called EMI, who was responsible for making recordings of classical music. 

The pieces you’ll hear take us on a journey through time linking to the exciting history of the Philharmonia, from 1945 to today – a history you are all part of by being part of Orchestra Unwrapped in its 80th year!

A note from the Maestro: As winter comes to a close in Maine we may see crocuses peeking up through lightly fallen snow, or delicate starflowers growing in our forests, heralding the warming spring weather ahead. With the awakening and blooming of Mother Nature, composers through the ages have embraced spring as a source of inspiration. The ballet, The Rite of Spring, by Stravinsky engages one of the largest orchestras we have ever put on the stage of the Collins Center and this epic work will have us rolling and romping through the rhythmic splendor of springtime. Callirhoë by Chaminade is inspired by Venus, goddess of fertility, and the Spring Afternoon by Boulanger is a sweet short journey into the impressionist style. The robust merrymaking of Rimsky-Korsakov’s Russian Easter Overture kicks off this programmatic celebration of Spring.

March 21 is the vernal equinox — the precise day winter concedes to spring. This concert makes that moment audible. The first half belongs to Sibelius: the brooding, iron-cold grandeur of Finlandia, followed by a violin concerto that sounds like one human voice against an entire frozen landscape. This is endurance music. Nordic, uncompromising, beautiful in its bleakness.

Then comes the interval. And everything changes.

The second half is Stravinsky's Rite of Spring — complete, uncut, and performed at full force. One of the most famous premieres in concert history, it doesn't describe spring so much as ambush it: the sudden eruption of rhythm, the sacrifice, the sheer physical violence of the season arriving. After the stillness of Sibelius, it lands like a weather system.

This is one of the great programming pairings in the orchestral canon. The date makes it a ritual. Come to mark the turning of the year.

The concert centers on the legend of the magical Firebird, a creature that brings either great fortune or ruin to its captor. In the fairy tale that inspired Igor Stravinsky’s famous ballet, the Firebird is caught by Tsar Ivan, who releases her in exchange for a magical charm to aid him on his journey. Along the way, Ivan must face the evil sorcerer Kashchey and rescue a princess. The concert, conducted by Ukrainian maestro Kirill Karabits, also features a world premiere by his compatriot Théodore Akimenko. Pianist Simon Trpčeski joins ERSO to perform Maurice Ravel’s dazzling Piano Concerto.

Andrew Litton conducts the classic Firebird Suite, drawn from the dazzling ballet that shot Stravinsky into the 20th-century classical music pantheon almost overnight. The Seattle Symphony Chorale joins the orchestra for Poulenc's first choral work with orchestra, the 12-movement Stabat Mater — penned in response to the sudden death of his friend. Poulenc was inspired by his pilgrimage to the holy shrine of the Black Madonna of Rocamadour, which reinvigorated his Catholic faith, and the medieval Stabat Mater hymn to the Virgin Mary.

Deep in a kingdom of shadow rules the green-clawed demon king Kashchey – but young Prince Ivan has a gallant heart, and with the aid of the enchanted Firebird, even the darkest spells can be broken. When Stravinsky composed The Firebird he didn’t just imagine a wondrous fantasy world. He let us hear it, too, and today conductor Dionysis Grammenos and the LPO take you to new realms of sound – from Debussy’s sensuous arcadia to Mendelssohn’s Scottish seascape. Pianist Lukas Sternath, meanwhile, brings all his award-winning artistry to Mozart’s 23rd Piano Concerto. Some say it’s his loveliest.

He ultimately became the greatest symphonic voice of the 20th century, but 19-year-old Shostakovich was a “precocious” composer, with his First Symphony causing a sensation. People fought to hear its premiere. It anticipates the characteristics that mark his later creations, too -- it’s cheeky, brash, vigorous, full of rhythmic drive. A wonderfully contrasting voice is Ibert’s charming Concerto, masterfully performed by our renowned flute soloist.

Dynamic and rapidly rising American conductor, Michelle Merrill, graces the Tulsa stage as she conducts our opening piece, Symphony in E minor, op."32, "Gaelic," which reflects composer Amy Beach’s Celtic heritage with themes of Irish and Scottish folk music—a perfect complement to the St. Patrick’s Day holiday! With Ravel’s Alborada del gracioso, expect to enjoy the vibrant contrast inspired by Spanish dance rhythms and melodies. Austrian conductor Christoph Koncz invites us to a festival of orchestral images. We begin with the overture to Wagner's Meistersinger , which foreshadows all the opera's themes. With its romantic flair and majesty, it celebrates the artist's freedom from established rules. Wagner's father-in-law, Liszt, and his First Concerto allow American pianist Michelle Cann—a Grammy winner in February 2025—to dazzle us with a dazzling display of virtuosity. The score's evocative and emotional richness also gives a universal dimension to this pillar of the piano repertoire.

A concert at Teatro alla Scala is a true celebration for the Czech Philharmonic. Only a select few orchestras are invited to perform symphonic programmes at this iconic Milanese temple of opera. The orchestra's appearances there have been rare: Karel Ančerl etched two memorable performances into its history, and now Chief Conductor Semyon Bychkov will add a second mark of his own. The programme will include works by Mendelssohn, Ravel, and Stravinsky.

Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring was so novel and unprecedented that a riot broke out at its premiere. Violinist Benjamin Beilman brings his trademark flair to Mozart’s final and most virtuosic violin concerto. The program opens with Joan Tower’s 1920/2019, composed in 2019 to honor the 1920 passage of the 19th amendment granting women suffrage.

The Czech Philharmonic returns to Vienna’s Konzerthaus two years after its last appearance—and nearly a century after its debut there. The programme will include works by Mendelssohn, Ravel, and Stravinsky.

Petrushka is one of Stravinsky’s famous works. It can be performed as a ballet, a stand alone orchestral suite, and even as piano four-hands. All three versions were arranged and edited by Stravinsky. Compared to his orchestral version, there were a lot of melodic themes and color that were omitted in his piano four-hands version. Brian Smith and Peter White have made a new arrangement for 2 pianos and 2 percussions to adapt the color, texture, and melodies from the orchestral suite that were missing in the four-hands version. This version was premiered on August 17, 2024 at the Staunton Music Festival by Brian Smith, I-Jen Fang, Heini Kärkkäinen, and Carsten Schmidt.

Overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a decidedly playful overture by a very youthful Felix Mendelssohn (composed when he was just 17 years old). This sparkling work captures the magic of the fairy kingdom, the humor of the lovers’ entanglements, and the grandeur of Theseus’ court. Violinist Rachel Barton Pine returns to play Korngold’s Violin Concerto — a lush and romantic work that glows with cinematic beauty and emotional depth — bridging the worlds of classical music and Hollywood film scores. Debussy’s Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune is dreamlike music inspired by Stéphane Mallarmé’s poem about a faun’s sensual reverie that paints a lush and languid musical landscape, and a sense of wonder. Stravinsky’s ballet Petrushka tells the story of a tragic puppet brought to life by a magician, set against the vibrant backdrop of a Russian fair. All four of these lively pieces of music will fill us with a lightness of being.

Wagner composed his highly romantic Siegfried Idyll as a birthday gift for his wife, hiring a small ensemble to perform it on the staircase outside her bedroom. Schoenberg’s Chamber Symphony No. 1 was a pivotal work, bridging the gap between 19th-century romanticism and 20th-century modernism.

The LPO’s new Composer-in-Residence is a sonic alchemist in his own right – a composer who transforms subtle and exquisite sounds into vast emotional landscapes. He’ll conduct his own work Palimpsests, too: music inspired by the many different tales written on medieval manuscripts, and framed tonight by masterpieces that set Benjamin’s own imagination on fire.

Symphony concert meets dance floor: Poulenc's Dance Suite, composed for the Ballets Russes, transports its audience to the vibrant atmosphere of 1920s salons. In the ballet "Petrushka," puppetry meets the reality of deadly jealousy, a theme explored by Stravinsky's music with subtle irony and Russian folk dances. The exceptional young guitarist Laura Lootens performs Joaquín Rodigo's popular Guitar Concerto, which transformed its blind composer into a Spanish cultural ambassador and national hero. Chin-Chao Lin, principal conductor of the Klagenfurt City Theatre, returns to Wiesbaden for this concert.

In February, French conductor Pierre Bleuse returns to eRSO after his successful debut in 2024. Appropriately, the evening will feature a program rich in French music. It begins with Maurice Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin, an orchestral adaptation of his piano suite, structured in the style of a Baroque dance suite. The program continues with Igor Stravinsky’s Violin Concerto in D, performed by the expressive and accomplished Liya Petrova. Emmanuel Chabrier’s lively rhapsody España, his most beloved orchestral piece, will also be featured. The evening closes with Claude Debussy’s Jeux (The Games), a poetic and impressionistic ballet score that premiered in 1913.

When Rachmaninoff first performed his Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, it had the audience in raptures. The extraordinary pianist had written a showstopper, and audiences have loved its lush, romantic melodies for nearly 100 years. Now, the ever-adventurous pianist Dejan Lazić returns to the ACO to play it, in a new arrangement for piano and strings.

A lunch break that invigorates the mind. The Thursday lunch concerts will bring audiences the best selection of the Friday night programme.

Symphonic Lunch IV: Pierre Bleuse and Liya Petrova. Stravinsky

This season, several of the DR Symphony Orchestra's own musicians can be experienced as soloists in front of their orchestra, and for this concert it is 1st solo cellist Henrik Dam Thomsen, who has recently won both Danish and international awards for his playing. He is the soloist in Elgar's expressive cello concerto, which for this concert is surrounded by two eerie parties.

Hilary Hahn is one of the top violinists of our time, with three Grammy awards to her name and a devoted fan base who will travel hundreds of miles to hear her live.  

She joins the Philharmonia for Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No. 2. Lyrical, long-breathed melodies fill the first two movements. But the violin’s singing lines are tinged with darkness, and give way to a stumbling dance in the finale.

Rediscover 20th-century classics that represent landmark moments in The Philadelphia Orchestra’s history! The Orchestra performed the 1922 U.S. premiere of Stravinsky’sThe Rite of Spring, the work that had so scandalized Paris audiences only nine years earlier. In 1934, the Orchestra gave the U.S. premiere of Shostakovich's First Piano Concerto, one of 11 of the composer's works this Orchestra brought to America for the first time. In these concerts, Shostakovich’s witty, irreverent Concerto will be performed by the “astonishing” Seong-Jin Cho, a pianist of “sensitivity, nuance, tremendous fluidity and elegance of style” (Bachtrack).

Schnittke’s Moz-Art à la Haydn is based on an unfinished fragment by Mozart and features playful themes from both Mozart and Haydn. The program also features Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 and Stravinsky’s chamber concerto, Dumbarton Oaks, which was heavily inspired by Bach’s Brandenburg series.

Anyone who wins the junior section of the legendary International Tchaikovsky Competition at the age of 13 is under special scrutiny. Even ten years later, Alexander Malofeev continues to fulfill the associated expectations with flying colors. Since then, the Russian, dubbed a "world revolution on the piano" by the Wiener Standard, has collected numerous other prizes and performed with the world's greatest orchestras. In 2022, he stood in for Yevgeny Kissin with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra. "The audience went wild with enthusiasm," wrote the Frankfurter Rundschau. At the Elbphilharmonie, the still only 23-year-old now devotes himself to both the grand masters of Russian piano music and darkly shimmering works from Northern Europe.

Pianist Gabriela Montero returns to Spivey Hall with Westward, a program featuring extraordinary immigrant composers and anchored by her improvised accompaniment to Charlie Chaplin’s 1917 film, The Immigrant. Known as a master improviser, Montero’s visionary interpretations and unique compositions have received critical acclaim and brought her a devoted following. A multiple-Grammy® and International Beethoven Award winner, Montero has been recognized by Amnesty International and the Human Rights Foundation as a committed human rights advocate for her work in her native Venezuela.

This intimate concert showcases the Baroque and Neoclassical eras alongside contemporary American voices. Works include Jessie Montgomery’s energetic Starburst, Handel’s Arrival of the Queen of Sheba, and Stravinsky’s playful Pulcinella Suite. Guest violinist Megan Karls joins the orchestra for Bach’s Violin Concerto in A Minor, with additional selections from Bach’s Orchestral Suite No. 2 and Vivaldi’s Concerto for Strings RV156.

The Chicago Symphony Orchestra returns to Santa Barbara once again under the baton of its esteemed Music Director Emeritus for Life, Riccardo Muti. For more than five decades, Maestro Muti has been a commanding presence on the world’s concert stages, shaping the sound of leading orchestras and opera houses as one of the last of the great Italian maestros in the tradition of Toscanini. The program features two pinnacle masterworks, Brahms’ Symphony No. 4 and then Maurice Ravel’s Boléro with its mesmerizing orchestral crescendo that builds from a quiet whisper to perhaps the most most thrilling climax of the symphonic repertoire.
