Acclaimed clarinetist Anat Cohen and 7-string guitarist Marcello Gonçalves team together in a series of intimate, lyrical duets. Breathtaking melodies, Brazilian grooves, and elements of jazz highlight the intricate talents of both Cohen and Gonçalves. In their second duo album, Reconvexo, Brazilian 7-string guitar player Gonçalves and New York-based clarinetist Cohen turn their attention to music from the Música Popular Brasileira (MPB) songbook. Against the backdrop of a country and world turning inward, the duo set out to record an album inspired by the beauty of Brazil and the spirit of its people. The result is at once intimate and virtuosic, mournful and hopeful, soaked with the feeling expressed uniquely in the Portuguese language as saudade – bittersweet, at once deeply happy and sad, and full of emotion.

This is a double bill not to be missed! Clarinet virtuoso Anat Cohen has always felt a deep connection to the joy, inventiveness, and deep grooves of Brazilian musical traditions. During her frequent trips to Brazil, Anat has found kindred spirits in the remarkable musicians there including the brilliant guitarist Romero Lubambo who was in the thick of the original bossa nova explosion in the 1960s. Anat and Romero have each become regulars on our stage in different combinations. Together, their approach to samba, bossa nova, and other Brazilian music styles is absolutely sublime.

Pianist and composer Sullivan Fortner exudes an inventiveness that many jazz artists develop growing up in the crucible of creativity that is New Orleans. His first appearance at the Stanford Jazz Festival with Cécile McLorin Salvant was jaw-droppingly fresh and gorgeous, and his work with Cécile led to their Grammy win for The Window. In this special performance, Sullivan appears with his trio, with whom he’s been extending the jazz piano trio tradition into swinging new territory. Special guest Anat Cohen is the preeminent virtuoso on clarinet and cut from the same improvisatory cloth as Sullivan, and together they’ll dazzle you.

Clarinet virtuoso Anat Cohen has always felt a deep connection to the joy, inventiveness, and deep grooves of Brazilian musical traditions. Anat has found kindred spirits in the remarkable musicians who join her in this show: Accordion virtuoso Vitor Gonçalves and special guest vocalist/pianist Claudia Villela.

An astonishing talent on piano and accordion, and as a composer, Vitor shares a Grammy nomination for Best Large Jazz Ensemble with Anat for her Tentet album, released in 2020, as well as for his work on Thalma de Freitas’s 2020 release, which was nominated for Best Latin Jazz Album.

Claudia has captivated jazz audiences and major artists with her musicality, imagination, and stunning five-octave vocal range. She’s worked with many leading artists, several of whom jumped at the chance to record with Claudia on her own releases, including Toots Thielemans, Kenny Werner, Michael Brecker, Harvie Swartz, and Toninho Horta, among others.

Similarly, always topping the Trombonist of the Year and Critic’s Poll lists, Wycliffe Gordon is one of the foremost musical ambassadors and interpreters of America’s music. With unmatched mastery of the plunger mute, his exceptional technique and signature sound has solidified his place as one of the top trombonists of his generation. Accompanying these two jazz virtuosi is the SJW 50/50 Jazz Orchestra, SJW’s egalitarian ensemble of women and men who are among the top jazz artists in the Bay Area.
