Stravinsky’s ballet The Rite of Spring scandalized listeners at its premiere in 1913, but the work has since stood the test of time as one of the composer’s finest creations and one of the greatest orchestral works of the 20th century. Much has been written about the riot that disrupted the 1913 world premiere of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring. What incited such a reaction? Was it the music or the choreography? Was it the subject matter (human sacrifice), or was it personal? No one knows for sure, but by 1940, Walt Disney saw fit to include the piece in his feature film Fantasia. Today, The Rite of Spring isn’t quite so shocking but delivers a thrilling sound experience in the hands of a great orchestra. This week, ASO Music Director Laureate Robert Spano conducts Stravinsky’s masterpiece and welcomes the return of American composer Jonathan Leshnoff for the world premiere of his oratorio Sacrifice of Isaac.

The city of Paris was ablaze the night Igor Stravinsky’s Le Sacre du printemps premiered in 1913: Riots that reportedly began in the theater’s aisles—visceral responses to the ballet’s unconventional rhythms and modern aesthetic—poured into the streets. Yet in its 110-year history, the work has become one of the most recognizable and beloved triumphs of the 20th century. In this program, the Festival’s Resident Conductor and Director of Orchestral Activities John Kennedy pairs this monumental work with a thrilling US premiere of Philip Glass’s Symphony No. 14.

They call it the Belle Époque—in the early years of the 20th century, the French capital became a magnet for creatives, including Pablo Picasso, Claude Debussy, Gertrude Stein, Henri Matisse, and Marcel Proust. Steeped in that world, two friends, Igor Stravinsky and Maurice Ravel, combined lush harmonies with scintillating orchestral colors to become giants of modern music. Ravel tapped into his Spanish roots for his lusty and bombastic Alborada del gracioso, contrasted here with his delicate nod to the French Baroque. Closing the 2023/24 season, Maestro Stutzmann conducts Stravinsky’s watershed ballet, The Firebird, a titanic and lustrous dazzler in the hands of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. The program pairs these works with one of the great monuments for solo violin, the Beethoven Violin Concerto featuring the much-anticipated return of the German violin virtuoso Veronika Eberle, who wowed Atlanta audiences in 2018 with her “totally on fire” (ArtsATL) performance of Brahms.

Igor Stravinsky saw William Hogarth’s set of eight 18th century paintings and engravings of London life and created a groundbreaking opera on them. WH Auden’s poetic English libretto resonates with the speech and danger of those London streets. The Rake’s Progress is a devastating morality play, packed with wit, satire, high comedy, and tragedy. It dances on a pin of laughter and ridicule. Stravinsky’s score is a modern Mozart opera, infused with delicious parody and celebration of the earlier genius’ music. This new production will be created by the celebrated prize-winning director/designer Antony McDonald. Tom Primrose, our 2023 chorus master, conducts. The cast is a roll-call of British stars. Emerging tenor Adam Temple Smith and Alexandra Oomens, critically praised as Euridice and Belinda in our 2023 Double Bill, sing the young lovers Tom Rakewell and Anne Trulove. Scottish/Iranian bass-baritone Michael Mofidian is Nick Shadow; Rosie Aldridge Baba the Turk, Catherine Wyn-Rogers Mother Goose and John Graham Hall the Auctioneer, Sellem. Who doesn’t love the story of 1,001 Arabian Nights? In Scheherazade, Russian composer Rimsky-Korsakov used the full might of the symphony orchestra to retell a few of those tales. Heavy brass portray the sultan while a violin solo spins out the beginning of each of Scheherazade’s tales. George Balachine’s Mozartiana is a wonderful example of neoclassical ballet with an enchanting romantic feel. The beautifully musical choreography is set to P.I. Tchaikovsky’s Suite No.4, Mozartiana, and Op.61. Opening at the 1981 Tchaikovsky Festival, it was Balanchine’s third ballet set to the composer’s homage to Mozart and is one of the last ballets the choreographer created before his death in April 1983.
