Join us at our “Vitality” concert where the University Wind Ensemble presents a variety of repertoire in collaboration with guest artists Eighth Blackbird, faculty conductor Jerry Luckhardt, and doctoral candidate conductor Yusri Muhamad. Repertoire includes Bjork Guðmundsdóttir’s Overture from Dancer in the Dark, Ralph Vaughan Williams’s Scherzo alla Marcia, Carlos Simon’s Sweet Chariot, Ida Gotkovsky’s Poeme Du Feu, and Viet Cuong’s Vital Sines.

As the house lights fade on Dr. Vickerman’s inaugural season, a single spotlight brightens to illuminate our very special guest artist for the afternoon, Sameer Gupta. One of the few percussionists in the world who is fluent in both American jazz and classical Indian music, Mr. Gupta’s unique musical sound combines traditional and modern improvisational styles. His prodigious skills on the Indian hand drums, or tabla, will be center stage he joins the Wind Symphony in performing Reena Esmail’s Chamak. The concert also features Jennifer Jolley’s poignant contemplation on the destruction of California wildfires, Ash, alongside the energetic and rhythmic Dancing Fire by Kevin Day. The concert concludes with Ida Gotkovsky’s epic masterpiece Poeme du Feu. Don’t miss it!

Join us for an evening of exceptional saxophone performance by Brian Kachur, a Doctor of Musical Arts student under the guidance of Taimur Sullivan. This recital is set to take place on Tuesday, May 14, 2024, at 8:30pm CDT in the McClintock Choral and Recital Room, located within the prestigious Patrick G. and Shirley W. Ryan Center for the Musical Arts. 

Brian will be accompanied by Nathan Canfield on piano and harpsichord, presenting a captivating program that includes Luciano Berio's Sequenza VIIb, Giacinto Scelsi's Tre pezzi, Ida Gotkovsky's Brilliance, Roger Boutry's Divertimento, and François Couperin's Pièces en concert arranged by Paul Bazelaire, concluding with Steven Banks' Come As You Are.

Join us for an exceptional musical showcase featuring the talented Lola Mae Stevenson on bass trombone, as part of her Master of Music recital. This captivating event will take place on Sunday, May 5, 2024, at 2:30pm CDT in the Regenstein Master Class Room at the Bienen School of Music, Northwestern University.

Lola Mae Stevenson, a distinguished student under the guidance of Michael Mulcahy, Randall Hawes, Reed Capshaw, and R. Douglas Wright, will perform a diverse repertoire that promises to enchant and inspire. The program includes works by Daniela Candillari, Kevin McKee, Robert Spillman, Vinicio A. Meza, Ida Gotkovsky, and Satoshi Yagisawa, featuring compositions such as "Extremely Close," "Iron Horse" for brass quintet, "Concerto for Bass Trombone," "Canción sin palabras," "Lied," and "Love Song."

Supporting Stevenson on stage will be Zach Hommel and Parisa Tofigh on trumpet, Gwen Boros on horn, Tim George on trombone, and Yoko Yamada-Selvaggio on piano, making this recital a collaborative celebration of brass music.
