The Music Makers Summer Session, the inaugural month-long concert series at the WYSO Center for Music, kicks off with an hour-long performance by the Tuuli Quartet, an Upper Peninsula-formed string ensemble that performs regularly across the Midwest, at 6:30pm. Named one of the greatest string quartets of the last century by BBC Music Magazine, the two-time Grammy-nominated Dover Quartet is one of the world’s most in-demand chamber ensembles. The group’s awards include a sweep of all prizes at the 2013 Banff International String Quartet Competition, grand and first prizes at the Fischoff Chamber Music Competition, and prizes at the Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition. The quartet has also been honored with the Avery Fisher Career Grant, Chamber Music America’s Cleveland Quartet Award, and Lincoln Center’s Hunt Family Award. Recent collaborators include pianist Emanuel Ax, harpist Bridget Kibbey, bassist Edgar Meyer, and bass-baritone Davóne Tines, and the quartet has premiered works by Mason Bates, Marc Neikrug, and Chris Rogerson.

Hailed as “the pre-eminent guitarist of our time”, she is the winner of Guitar Player magazine’s Best Classical Guitarist award, Germany’s Echo Klassik, Concert Artists Guild’s Virtuoso Award, the Toronto and Madrid Queen Sofia competitions, and the first guitarist to win the Munich ARD Competition. Side-by-Side with Young Artists

University of Idaho

We welcome the return of Amit Peled to perform Elgar’s sublime Cello Concerto in E minor, a work considered to be the greatest cello concerto of the twentieth century. Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture recounts in music Mendelssohn’s seas journey to Fingal’s Cave in the Hebrides. We conclude with the popular Symphony No. 8 in G major by Dvorak, a work abounding in melody especially for the cello section. We will also feature a world premiere from local composer Stefan Podell.
