Welcome spring with a sunny program of music for strings, winds, piano, and harp. Hungarian pianist and composer Ernő Dohnányi was inspired by works penned by Mozart and Beethoven. His Serenade has found a revered place in the string trio repertoire. Belgian composer Joseph Jongen’s trios for flute, cello, and harp reveal the influence of Impressionist composers Debussy and Ravel. Mozart was so pleased with his Quintet for Piano and Winds that he wrote to his father that it was “… the best thing I have written in my life." Generations of audiences have reveled in this grand and joyful work.

When Sergei Prokofiev's Second Piano Concerto was first performed in September 1913, with the composer at the piano, the audience was furious: "To hell with futuristic music. Cats on the roof make better music." Prokofiev bowed as if being applauded – and played an encore. Over a century later, what today's ears consider a rather "moderate" concerto, which begins with an almost romantic theme and features the most difficult solo cadenza of all time, has long been recognized as a masterpiece. The jubilation for soloist Alexander Gadjiev is surely genuine. This is the first time the polyglot pianist, born on the Italian-Slovenian border, has appeared with the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra.

Chamber music by a Hungarian composer who remains underappreciated to this day. Unlike Bartók and Kodály, Dohnányi remained committed to Romanticism throughout his life. His sonorous Piano Quintet and Sextet captivate with their inventiveness. They are a discovery, as is the uniquely scored Trio by the German Romantic composer Reinecke. Dohnányi was a pianist, conductor, and composer, and in his youth, as a celebrated soloist, he was compared to Franz Liszt. He therefore had a particularly fortunate touch when it came to piano chamber music, as can be experienced in this concert. As a composer, Dohnányi saw himself firmly in the tradition of Brahms. His late Sextet, however, transcends the world of Brahms and simultaneously revels in the broad stylistic panorama of the 1930s.

The French composer Lili Boulanger was the first (female) winner of the Prix de Rome in 1913. In her short life she created numerous works and is considered one of the main figures of French Impressionism. The orchestral version of her composition "D'un matin de printemps" was her last major work. "From a Spring Morning" describes the late romantic intensity of the depiction of nature in its title and goes far beyond contemporary Impressionism.

Clarinet sounds instead of flute sounds: we had to change our programme for our first concert at the Bundesrat: Our three string colleagues* are now presenting our audience with an evening centred on the interplay between string instruments and the clarinet. Krzysztof Penderecki’s darkly luminous clarinet quartet opens the evening, followed by the serenade for string trio by Ernst von Doer, which is filled with a charming joy of playing and rhythmic vigour.

The 2024 Robert Mann Chamber Music Series begins with a spotlight on the Festival’s own musicians. Dohnányi’s sextet brings together piano, string trio, clarinet, and horn, an uncommon combination which the composer uses to mischievous effect. Beethoven’s brief “Eyeglasses Duo” is so called for a friendly note between colleagues — both Beethoven and his cellist friend Nikolaus Zmeskall required spectacles — and its music is similarly conversational and good-humored. This concert of beautiful duets and trios is a celebration of friendship, community and a shared love of music.  For twelve years, Lorna, Jenny and Rhian have played together in the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. This concert will be recorded for CD and all proceeds from the recording will go towards the PSO Musicians’ Care Fund, chaired by Rhian Kenny. The mission of the Fund is to provide musical experiences to all children, regardless of the ability of their family or school district to pay. Additionally, our broader flute community will also be represented as members of Pittsburgh Flute Academy, led by Wendy Kumer, will serenade the audience on arrival.

The phenomenal Dover Quartet is joined by Norway’s foremost pianist Leif Ove Andsnes, who gave a masterful recital in Koerner Hall in January 2023.

Named one of the greatest string quartets of the last 100 years by BBC Music Magazine, the Grammy Award nominated Dover Quartet’s rise from up-and-coming young ensemble who swept all the prizes at the 2013 Banff International String Quartet Competition to occupying a spot at the top of their field has been “practically meteoric” (Strings). With its burnished warmth, incisive rhythms, and natural phrasing, the Quartet’s distinctive sound has helped confirm its status as “the young American string quartet of the moment” (The New Yorker). As Strad observes, “With their exceptional interpretative maturity, tonal refinement, and taut ensemble,” the Dover Quartet is “pulling away from their peers.”

Mikhail Glinka's overture to the opera Ruslan and Ludmilla , written directly for the orchestra, often during rehearsals in the director's room , is a milestone in Russian music. And Peter Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5, completed in 1888 after the European tour, is one of his most popular, along with the two neighboring symphonies. Three exceptional artists comprise this brilliant trio, remarkable for its transparency and vibrancy of expression.  String trios are a far rarer species than string quartets and the Boccherini Trio is in the top rung of the breed, recently releasing much-acclaimed recordings of the complete string trios of Beethoven on the Genuin Classics label. The Trio performs in such venues as Wigmore Hall and Konzerthaus Berlin, as well as the most important festivals. The string trio repertoire, though small, is rich with masterpieces, and we will hear some of the best of the best.

The complex textures and rich harmonies characteristic of Richard Wagner’s compositions had a magnetic force on the composers featured on this afternoon’s program. From Strauss’ lusciously scored and radiantly colorful Sextet from his opera Capriccio and a string version of Berg’s intense Piano Sonata to arrangements and works in honor of Wagner by his own father-in-law, Franz Liszt, this program is a testament to the dominant force of this Romantic master. The program ends with the rarely heard, lushly exuberant Sextet by Hungarian composer Ernst Von Dohnányi for strings, clarinet, and horn.
