Marios Papadopoulos conducts it here after the sea-spray of the composer’s Hebrides Overture and the passionate G minor Piano Concerto under the agile fingers of Nuron Mukumi, alumnus of the Oxford Piano Festival.

There is perhaps no more beloved violin concerto than Mendelssohn’s masterpiece. Journeying from darkness to light, it begins restless, mysterious and questioning, and ends in a blaze of colour, full of joy and exhilaration. The sheer quality of the music and lightness of touch, bursting with unbridled vitality that leaves audiences clamouring for more, makes it a favourite amongst performers and listeners alike. Brahms’ First Symphony, although inspired by those of his hero Beethoven, broke new ground for symphonic form. It is a symbolic journey from darkness to light, the themes developed from a handful of motivic nuggets, all smelted together into a shining edifice, with nothing wasted. A turbulent mood is established at the outset, by turns dark and meltingly warm, often infused with a rueful quality expressing a strain of sadness in his personality never lightened by artistic success. Schumann’s majestic and vivacious Overture, Scherzo & Finale is a joyous work. It opens in dramatic fashion, dark and challenging, until a lively major melody appears, lightening the mood.

On the mighty Dobson organ at Merton College, Bath Abbey organist Huw Williams orients his recital around the last of Bach’s sublime Trio Sonatas – with its Italianate striding Vivace, rocking Lento and rambunctious final Allegro – and the Lutheran chorale Vater unser im Himmelreich, which forms the basis of the last of Mendelssohn’s mighty organ sonatas and Bach’s own canon from the Clavierübung. Completing the programme is Mendelssohn’s Prelude and Fugue in C minor, in which the composer, directly inspired by his hero Bach, laid out his vision for a new contrapuntal music

It was Felix Mendelssohn who brought Bach back into currency in nineteenth-century Germany. In addition to reviving countless works by his Leipzig forebear, Mendelssohn made his own arrangements, including his expanding of the poised calligraphy of Bach’s Partitas for solo violin. This performance of two of Mendelssohn’s most effective transcriptions is capped by the composer’s own Piano Trio No. 1, a joyous conversation for violin, cello and piano in which the thunderously dramatic alternates with the gently elegiac.

Mozart wrote his only concerto for clarinet in the space of about ten days, when he was at the height of his powers, and only two months before his tragically early death.  It is a glorious work: the first great concerto for the instrument, and some would say still the greatest, which displays the range and agility of the clarinet as well as its velvety and soulful qualities. Mendelssohn’s Fourth Symphony is extroverted from the outset, conjuring up the sunny skies and landscapes of the Italian countryside in a virtually flawless assembly of airy and fiery dances, never letting the excitement lapse for a moment. Truly Italian, Rossini’s youthful sonata is a joyous and overtly dramatic example of the Italian tradition of instrumental belcanto with its rapid flourishes, whilst Mascagni’s passionate intermezzo never fails to pull at the heart strings.

Violinist Ava Kenney made her solo orchestral debut at the age of 13 with the Madison Symphony Orchestra, and has since performed with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra, La Crosse Symphony, Concord Chamber Orchestra, Middleton Community Orchestra and Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestras. A passionate orchestral and chamber musician, Ava performed for eight seasons with the Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestras under the direction of Kyle Knox, where she also enjoyed performing chamber music in the WYSO Honors String Quartet. As a member of the Pondrom Quartet, she won the silver medal and BIPOC performance prize in the 2023 Saint Paul String Quartet Competition Junior Division, along with receiving honorable mention in the 2023 Chicago National Chamber Music Competition. Ava has also been featured on NPR's From the Top, WPR's Midday Show, and WMVO - Voice of Monona's Sunday Afternoon Live with Buzz Kemper. Ava is currently a member of the Nox Quartet, who performs as part of the NEC Community Performance & Partnership Fellowship and were silver medalists in the 2024 Saint Paul String Quartet Competition Senior Division. LSO’s chamber orchestra concert takes place this year in the magnificent space of Saint Paul United Methodist Church. Composer David von Kampen’s award-winning song cycle Under the Silver and Home Again, orchestrated for LSO and composed for and performed by baritone Nathaniel Sullivan, will be paired with Ravel’s song cycle Don Quixote to Dulcinea. Dvořák broke new ground with his Eighth Symphony, a work, as he explained, meant to be “different from the other symphonies, with individual thoughts worked out in a new way.” The music is steeped in the flavour and atmosphere of the Czech countryside. It has often been described as a “sunny” work, but in truth it is much more than that; there are passages of drama, exhilaration, happiness and nostalgia.

In the summer of 1826 Felix Mendelssohn stumbled upon a German translation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream made by August Wilhelm Schlegel. Spellbound, the 17-year-old composer wrote an orchestral overture for the play and, another 17 years later, augmented it with yet more scene-setting music – the most enchanting and characterful he would write. Gemma New joins the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra for Mendelssohn’s musical retelling of Shakespeare’s story (see also Proms 24 & 68) – performed with readings from the play for dramatic context – after equally colourful musical storytelling from forgotten French late-Romantic composer Mel Bonis and the heavenly sounds of Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto.

In October 1898, the committee of the Norwich Festival requested a short choral work for their next Season. However, during this period Elgar was preoccupied with writing his Enigma Variations, and by the time he returned to the work, the committee had changed its mind. They had engaged the young alto, Clara Butt, and wanted a work which she could premiere. So he crafted Sea Pictures, based on five poems by different authors, each offering a different response to the ocean. A work noted for its drama, serenity and richness, the soloist will be the Northern Ireland mezzo, Sarah Richmond.

The fabulous German violinist Arabella Steinbacher is the soloist in Mendelssohn's sensitive Violin Concerto, and the concert also offers a musical portrayal of Don Juan and his frenzied pursuit of women in Richard Strauss's tone poem Don Juan . In the summer of 1910, Gustav Mahler wrote his very last work - which he never finished before his death the following year. Only the first movement was orchestrated and ready for performance. Since then, several have tried to creep into Mahler's universe of thought and complete his sketches and drafts for the rest of the symphony – among them the Israeli-American conductor Yoel Gamzou, who this evening conducts his own take on a performance version of Mahler's 10th Symphony.

Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s Ballade sets a wild and windswept tone for a concert that ends with a symphony inspired by the ruins of the chapel at the Palace of Holyrood, full of fierce energy and which even hints at the inevitable and typical Scottish thunderstorm! Mendelssohn’s ability to depict landscape in music is fully evident here and the dramatic Highlands scenery that he enjoyed on holiday is sketched in magical style. Bringing a little musical calm to temper the storm is Scottish pianist Steven Osborne, who performs Mozart’s mellow and serene Piano Concerto No.27.

**About the Artist:**
Laurie Blanchet, who joined the clarinet section of the Fort Wayne Philharmonic in 2022, will be performing during the event. Only a few days into his visit to Italy, Mendelssohn, like many of us fortunate enough to visit Bel Paese, was already smitten: “This is Italy!” he wrote, “…and I am loving it.” He completed his Fourth Symphony shortly after his return home, and the piece — alongside the other Italy-inspired works on the program by Berlioz, Saint-Saëns, and Charpentier — paints a vibrant picture of the country as seen through the eyes of fellow non-Italians, all united in affection for the vivacious Italian culture, food, wine, and spirit.
