Featuring two of today’s brightest rising stars, this duo concert in our most intimate venue thrills on every level. It’s the recital debut of violinist María Dueñas, who gave a “stupendous” performance here in 2022 with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Gustavo Dudamel. “Dueñas was wholly captivating ... she could have drawn blood from [the violin’s] strings,” wrote The New York Times. The piece she performed to such acclaim was a new work by Carnegie Hall’s 2024–2025 Debs Composer’s Chair Gabriela Ortiz, who contributes another new work for this special occasion. On piano is Alexander Malofeev, an extraordinary artist of rapidly increasing international renown, who makes his own recital debut in March 2024.

The evening's programme opens with Aaron Copland's stirring "Fanfare for the Common Man," followed by the world premiere of a new work by US composer Jake Heggie and librettist Taylor Mac, featuring soprano Pumeza Matshikiza. The virtuosic and charming Piano Concerto No 2 by Camille Saint-Saëns will be performed by Pavel Kolesnikov, with an encore of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's "Valse sentimentale." Jan Lisiecki performs a program of preludes in his Carnegie Hall recital debut, treating audiences to dozens of succinct, characterful works by Chopin, J. S. It’s partner work from ‘Two Contemplations’, The Unanswered Question is less well-known but no less poignant. Often described as philosophy expressed in music, this relentlessly curious work deals with the “perennial question of existence”, and offsets three groups of instruments whose layers never quite come into sync.

His compatriot Witold Lutosławski’s folk-music influenced Concerto for Orchestra (1954) helped establish his international reputation. Trifonov made his Cal Performances debut in 2015 in a memorable duo recital with violinist Gidon Kremer, returning as a blazing soloist with the Montreal Symphony the following year—and his star has been rising steadily ever since, culminating in a 2021 Grammy nomination. Szymanowski and Symphonie fantastique

Berlioz was always in thrall to one craze or other. His Le corsaire Overture was inspired by a love of Byron, an attraction to piracy, and a failed affair. The result is a suitably colourful experience.

Composed in 1916, Szymanowski’s Violin Concerto is haunting, enigmatic and inspired by an ecstatic poem about a ‘rapturous conflagration’. And Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique is a wild ride through a drug-fuelled hallucination, triggered by thwarted love and full of astonishing orchestral effects.
