After Felix Mendelssohn left his parental home in Berlin in 1829, his sister Fanny, who was married to the court painter Wilhelm Hensel, took over the organisation of the family’s salon with its famous Sunday concerts. This was the only place where music lovers could hear her compositions, as for many years her professional ambitions were thwarted by her family. It was not until 1846 that Felix gave his blessing for his sister’s music to be published. Her last major work is the Piano Trio in D minor from 1847. Until recently, Fanny’s compositional talents remained more or less forgotten. Indeed, it was only at the very end of the 20th century that her work was systematically reviewed and edited for public performance.

6th Chamber Evening

When Arnold Schoenberg’s melodrama Pierrot lunaire premiered, not only did he add a new work to the classical canon but also introduced to the world a new special grouping of instruments called the “Pierrot ensemble.” For this Czech Chamber Music Society performance, curator Petr Popelka will be joined by musical friends and colleagues from some of Norway’s best orchestras to present this unique colour combination of woodwinds, strings, and piano.

The American George Crumb, who passed away in 2022, is undoubtedly in the pantheon of composers whose legacies are eternal. In this program, his cataclysmic Black Angels, a passionately anti-war statement for amplified string quartet, balances Olivier Messiaen’s Quatuor pour la fin du temps (Quartet for the End of Time), a devoutly spiritual, mystical work composed in a prisoner of war camp. And to open, J. S. Bach consecrates the concert hall with two of his most deeply felt, final works.

The anniversary season finale unfolds as the quintessential Radius concert—eclectic and dynamic, each piece the Epitome of its type. The swashbuckling biography of Joseph Bologne, aka the Chevalier de Saint-Georges, belies a sensitive musical voice that comes through in a capstone collection of sonatas for violin and viola, including the opus posthumous B-flat major sonata featured here. Post-modernist par excellence, George Crumb creates a spellbinding and immersive soundscape that recalls the songs of humpback whales in his now classic work Vox balaenae (Voice of the Whale) for amplified flute, cello, and piano. Trademark pulsing and rich harmonies pervade New York Counterpoint for clarinet and tape by minimalist icon Steve Reich. Finally, a new work by hometown hero and longtime friend of Radius, Elena Ruehr, brings the season to a climactic close. Inspired by Mondrian’s painting Broadway Boogie Woogie, the piece includes all members of the ensemble to commemorate 25 years.

This program features our Artistic Advisor and pianist Pedja Mužijević in a concert with friends including flutist Brandon Patrick George and clarinetist Mark Dover, both of Imani Winds; violinist Rebecca Anderson; cellist Sæunn Thorsteinsdóttir; and pianist Jenny Chen. The effervescent Jenny Chen, in her fourth appearance at Tippet Rise, kicks things off alongside Pedja Mužijević with Summer Dreams for Piano Duet, Op. 47 by Amy Beach, one of the first American female composers to reach notoriety. Brandon Patrick George and Sæunn Thorsteinsdóttir, both returning performers to Tippet Rise, and Pedja Mužijević will then perform Vox Balaenae (Voice of the Whale) for Flute, Cello, and Piano by George Crumb, one of the most original American composers who passed away at age 92 in February of 2022. Rebecca Anderson and Pedja Mužijević will also perform the World Premiere of a Tippet Rise Commission by Valentyn Silvestrov – Three Waltzes of the Moment for Violin and Piano (2019) – the sixth of ten works commissioned by the art center by Ukraine’s most important composer. The program concludes with Beethoven’s Trio for Clarinet, Cello, and Piano, Op. 11 featuring Mark Dover in his Tippet Rise debut with Sæunn Thorsteinsdóttir, and Pedja Mužijević.
