Master and student can exchange strange secrets. "Don't be afraid to raise your head if you want attention," Tchaikovsky once said to the worried Taneyev. Did Taneyev, in turn, pass on this advice to the young Rachmaninov? Surely, if we are to believe the outbursts of the First Symphony of the young Sergei, whose career owes much to this rigorous teacher. We rediscover Taneyev through his cantata Saint John of Damascus , a fusion of Bach's style and the folkloric and religious roots of his country. Like a bridge between 19th- and 20th-century Russia.

Leopold Stokowski, a great admirer of Bach, examined his works under the microscope and, with the aid of modern instruments, "magnified" the Baroque master's sound world into an orchestral experience. Taneyev, on the other hand, demonstrated an affinity for historical compositional styles, whose polyphonic compositional artistry even inspired admiration from his teacher Tchaikovsky. The cantata, little known in this country, tells of the last hours of John of Damascus in a haunting choral-symphonic movement. In contrast, Shostakovich chose a very secular theme for his cantata, which, in a historicizing way, was a parable of the brutal oppression in his time.

Defeat? Triumph! In 2006 he was our guest for the first time and delivered a non plus ultra interpretation of Tchaikovsky's 3rd Symphony. Unforgettable! In 2008 he came back and conducted Respighi's Fontane di Roma in a congenial manner . Impressive! Now he is coming again: Alan Buribayev, the master of the baton from Kazakhstan, former GMD in Meiningen, former head of the Het Brabants Orkest and now head of the Astana Opera in his homeland. This time he will conduct the overture to the Aeschylus opera L'Oresteia by Tchaikovsky's contemporary Sergei Taneyev and a Mozart concerto alongside the young Dutch violinist Hawijch Elders, who won 1st prize and three special prizes at the Henri Marteau International Violin Competition in 2023. Finally, Tchaikovsky's "Fifth" will be performed. Like the Beethoven symphony with the same number, it is a kind of "symphony of fate" that overwhelmingly presents the "Per Aspera Ad Astra", the dramaturgy of "Through Night to Light". Defeat? Triumph!

On 10 October 1894, the first concert of the Czech Chamber Music Society took place at the Rudolfinum. The Bohemian Quartet, of which Josef Suk was a member, played a programme of music by Smetana, Taneyev, and Dvořák. In this anniversary concert, the Talich Quartet will show how these composers’ music can still speak to audiences 130 years on. Joining them in his return to the Dvořák Hall is Lawrence Dutton, violist of the Emerson String Quartet.
