Lutenist

Founded in 2015 in Bozeman, Baroque Music Montana is well-known throughout the region for their engaging presentations of chamber music inspired by history. We are thrilled to welcome several members of the chamber group to Tippet Rise for their concert debut, including founder and baroque violinist Carrie Krause; Nate Helgeson, performing on the dulcien, a guitar-like instrument; and John Lenti, playing the theorbo, a predecessor to the modern-day bassoon. Their performance will feature 17th century music by Italian, German, and Spanish composers intermingled with informative and lively explanations and unique insights into the oldest music of the 2024 season.

To celebrate PBO’s abundance of talent, each season will now feature a program curated by an orchestra member. First up is our esteemed leader, Carla Moore, in a concert that delves into Georg Philipp Telemann’s vast musical cupboard. We explore a kaleidoscope of textures and styles, from the musings of solo lute to a declamatory overture for the full cohort of strings. Further contrast abounds with French and Italian works by two of Telemann’s likely influencers, Joseph Bodin de Boismortier and Francesco Durante.

Gorgeous French Music by Louis XV’s chamber music czar and main viol man, Marin Marais. A viol and a theorbo, the perfect recipe.  This is the concert that we had to postpone in March of 2020 (remember that time?), and it’s just got better since then.

Parish Hall of St. Mary Magdalen

Music by Quantz, Hotteterre, Marais, Forqueray, and James Oswald. This elegant and unusual program has it all: from early French to late German baroque flute sonatas and even some of the rarely heard Scots flower pieces by James Oswald. Bach and Forqueray also make special appearances. To the delight of all, Janet See returns to the Bay Area with a program of intimate chamber music. Catch it while it’s hot!

Old Friends The Music That Stood the Test of Time

Finally, but most gloriously, the 21-22 post-pandemic regular season will conclude on April 22 with Lynn Tetenbaum (viola da gamba), and John Lenti (theorbo), who will delight the hearts of viol players and other people of good taste by playing an entire concert of French Music for viol and theorbo. What more could you possibly want?
