Formed in Paris in 2015, Le Consort is an early music ensemble dedicated to the quintessential chamber music genre that reigned supreme in the Baroque era: the trio sonata. Made up of two violins, a cello and a harpsichord, the ensemble’s diverse repertoire includes trio sonatas from Italy, France, Germany and England, which represent the essence of Baroque chamber music., Le Consort’s Music in the Park Series program highlights the works of well-known composers who helped define the genre, such as J.S Bach, Georg Phillipe Telemann and Francesco Geminiani, as well as those whose works remain unknown and often unpublished, such as Giorgio Gentili, Nicola Porpora, and Michel-Pignolet de Montéclair.

Featuring works from the 12th to the 21st centuries, each piece depicts different kinds of light: light from nature, light that inspires or clarifies, and light that bestows joy. And there was light: By the end of the 16th century at the latest, affect had become an indispensable component of music. Stylus luxurians – "luminous style" – is what music theorist and composer Christoph Bernhard calls this creative device, which was also prevalent in the Baroque period and is characterized by theatricality and intense emotional expression. The Ensemble Astrum researches, experiments, and creates. In their program "And there was light ," the trio of artists led by award-winning Salzburg recorder player Felix Gutschi and Dutch soprano Noëlle Drost dedicate themselves to the stylus luxurians and take the audience on an emotionally profound journey through the Renaissance, Baroque, and early Classical periods.

This event, featuring the Mozarteum vocal Ensemble and the Capella dell'halla, opens the new Alpine Baroque concert series at Salzburg Cathedral. The title "On Galleries and Balconies" derives from the historical custom of the 17th century, when vocal and instrumental groups were distributed throughout the nave following the Italian model. This results in exciting spatial sound effects in works by Salzburg Cathedral Kapellmeister Andreas Hofer and HIF Biber.

NOCCO’s 10th Anniversary Season continues with music from around the globe, spanning nearly 350 years! Opening with Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber's Battalia à 10, the orchestra will paint a vivid and innovative depiction of a 17th-century battle that will captivate with its imaginative techniques and lively rhythms. Following is Viet Cuong's Extra(ordinarily) Fancy, a contemporary piece featuring two oboe soloists. Oboists, Janet Putnam and Bhavani Kotha will delight you with this piece’s playful energy, intricate textures, and unexpected twists. Australian composer Peggy Glanville-Hicks' Sinfonia da Pacifica provides a serene and reflective contrast, drawing inspiration from the Pacific region and enveloping the audience in its exotic and tranquil melodies. Finally, Mozart's Symphony No. 35 in D major, K.385 'Haffner', a work known for its brisk and joyful character brings the concert to a triumphant close.

Rachel Podger has been called “the queen of the baroque violin”. And Heinrich Biber was the ultimate maverick of 17th century music – a composer who took a new-fangled instrument called the violin and made it sing, dance, pray and turn somersaults. South Korean violinist Jinjoo Cho – first prizewinner of the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis and Concours musical international de Montrál, Buenos Aires, and more – joins Emerald City Music for a first-ever full length concert for only the solo violin. Three vastly different works bring into vision a “circle of life” narrative, musically bringing together a beginning and an end in the present moment. Beginning with the wandering mysteriousness of Biber’s Passacaglia – one of the world’s oldest surviving solo violin works – the night gives way to Bach’s stately Chaconne; widely considered the greatest work of all time in the violin repertoire. Juri Seo’s Toy Store – a multimedia work dedicated to Jinjoo Cho – is not music for children, but rather a reflective journey through the various experiences of childhood that live on in our minds as adults. Drawing inspiration from punk jazz, John Adams, 19th-century presto movements, and video game music, the first movement, “Jack-in-the-Box,” is a dramatic portrayal of surprise, humor, and obsession as experienced in a child-like mind. The second movement, “Monster Truck”, combines heavy metal and 18th-century Chaconne to create a musical narrative that is at once violent and hilarious. “Mobile,” explores the feelings of comfort and fear associated with falling asleep, as one experiences a taste of death. In the fourth movement, “Roller Skates,” a resolution begins to take shape as the violin and prerecorded track participate in multi-part unison canons. Finally, in the final movement, “Bubbles,” the ethereal soundscape of pizzicati, harmonics, and tremolo evokes lightness and release.

Artistic Partner Richard Egarr brings both dramatic flair and tenderness to works from the Baroque era. Johann Heinrich Schmelzer and Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber were pioneers of the violin and their groundbreaking music uses new techniques to depict the sounds of battle, rowdy soldiers singing at a pub and the song of a nightwatchman. Beethoven’s tuneful Seventh Symphony was called “the apotheosis of the dance” by Richard Wagner. The work’s dance-like elements, energy, and sense of joy are conveyed through rhythm.  After a slow introduction, the first movement is ignited by a dancing, dotted 6/8 rhythm that propels the entire Vivace.  The symphony’s second movement departs briefly from the other rhythmically charged movements. Perhaps the work’s best-known movement, the melody is dramatic and memorable for its simplicity. The composer Robert Schumann likened the movement to a “rustic wedding.”  The third movement, perhaps the most overtly dance-like movement, has a middle section in which one pitch is sustained with little variation, first in the violins then the trumpets. It is rhythm that drives this movement, contributing to its joyful spirit.  The finale is full of energy and exuberance, charging toward a triumphant and fulfilling conclusion at a breakneck pace. British musicologist Donald Tovey called the movement a “triumph of Bacchic fury.” The magic of this work is incessant and captivating rhythmic drive.  Charles Ives’ music imagines a powerful link between nature and the human spirit, and the journey that creates depth and adds substance to human life. The Unanswered Question, which opens this program, has been described as a piece of philosophy expressed in music. Ives writes in the score’s forward about how the composition considers humanity’s “perennial question of existence.” Three distinct groups – a solo trumpet (in many performances played offstage), four flutes, and strings express a probing and meditative quest for the answer.  Additional works on the program include excerpts from Biber’s Battalia, an evocative set for string orchestra in the tradition of vocal descriptions of a battle. Innovative techniques are called for, especially for the work’s time (1673), including col legno, in which the players use the wood of their bows to beat the strings of their instruments or a percussive pizzicato to imitate cannon shots.

Fancy a few artistic extravaganzas? Then the third palace concert of the season is just the right place for you. We've got a musical brawl by Biber on offer, a monkey dance à la Purcell, and wild dance numbers by Rameau. Bach's son, Wilhelm Friedemann, also goes against the grain of the laws of harmony. Astor Piazzolla's work isn't quite as bizarre, but then again, the tango was long considered extravagant. And Piazzolla, in particular, repeatedly built stylistic bridges to Baroque music, for example in his version of the "Four Seasons." Where Vivaldi celebrates country life, here we wander through the dance halls of Buenos Aires—including a fugue in "Spring."
