Britten Sinfonia and Guy Johnston reprise their acclaimed performances of John Tavener’s intensely beautiful The Protecting Veil, this time taking the piece to St Sophia’s Greek Orthodox Cathedral, London, where John Tavener used to worship.

The cello, with its rich timbre, its vibrato that brings the sound to life, and its unparalleled velvety sound, is the instrument that is said to come closest to the human voice. It is therefore quite natural that the cello voice of Cyrille Tricoire de Haro, supersolo cellist of the Orchestre National Montpellier, dialogues with that of the soprano Hwanyoo Lee, in this abundant and eclectic program, rich in emotion.

One hundred seventy-six years before the scandalous premiere of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring, composer Jean-Féry Rebel was indeed rebelling against the baroque style with his cacophony of dense chords that turned chaos into the creation of the world around us. John Tavener’s Eternity’s Sunrise provides a moment of calm before Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring.

Be inspired, transported, and uplifted in this, a journey through no less than 600 years of music celebrating Christmas. From Pachelbel’s beloved Canon, heard afresh on their period instruments, through to the rich, melting harmonies of Tchaikovsky and John Taverner’s spare, haunting, The Lamb, plus a brand new piece by Roderick Williams, written especially for the occasion. Music that will resonate with you for long after the concert, and a perfect start to the Holiday season.
