The dawn of the 20th century witnessed revolutions in music, literature, philosophy, and science as never before. Composers, liberated by Romanticism and fired by nationalism, explored disparate cultures and wrote music in powerful new ways. Once again the violin was at their sides—the ideal tool for sonic and emotional expression. Here we present works for violin and piano by four innovative composers from across the European continent, each influenced by world events and societies around them, bringing a unique character to a classic genre: the violin-piano duo.

Russian Shostakovich's work was composed when he was just 16 years old, and compared to his later works, it also sounds very much like the romantic style from the previous century.

Am a Fiddler” – as the basis for a delightful exploration of the entire orchestra. Meanwhile, George Enescu’s most
renowned orchestral work, the Romanian Rhapsody No. 1, deploys a variety of folk songs, including “I Have a
Coin, and I Want a Drink.” It’s a grand tour of nineteenth century European concert music, enjoyed from the

One of the greatest musicians of our lifetime, cellist Yo-Yo Ma reunites with his friend Cristian Mӑcelaru for a special one-night-only event. The program opens with two powerful, slashing chords from Brahms’ Tragic Overture that set the evening in motion. Then, Yo-Yo Ma brings his unmatched sensitivity and technical prowess to Elgar’s Cello Concerto, one of the most profound and emotionally charged works in the repertoire. As a final treat, Mӑcelaru gifts everyone a little piece of his native Romania with Enescu’s Romanian Rhapsody.

Many of you know Raphael Christ as our First Concertmaster, and not just from the Pur concerts. Regular concertgoers will have noticed, however, that recently, another face has been seen more frequently at the first violin desk: Vlad Stanculeasa has been the Coordinated First Concertmaster of the Bochum Symphony Orchestra since September 2024, sharing the position and responsibility with Raphael Christ.

Romantic fairy tales, Greek mythology, Russian puppet theater – our concert unites these and other musical stories, wrapped in compositions spanning the 19th century to contemporary works.

Ravel, the true DNA of the Orchestre National de France's repertoire, especially in this year of the 150th anniversary of his birth. Between the menacing whirlwinds of La Valse slips the Piano Concerto by his friend Gershwin, to whom Maurice Ravel once urged, when he came to ask his advice: "Be yourself!" This will be the roguish touch of this French gala between Paris and New York, under the fingers of the eternally young Rudolf Buchbinder.

The Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra (hr-Sinfonieorchester Frankfurt) has been invited to perform two concerts at the prestigious George Enescu International Festival this season. Chief conductor Alain Altinoglu will present Shostakovich's Symphony No. 8 in the Sala Palatului, followed by Sibelius's Violin Concerto with Austrian violinist Julian Rachlin. The second evening's program features Elgar's Cello Concerto with French cellist Gautier Capuçon, as well as Dvořák's Symphony No. 9 ("From the New World").

This year, the WDR Symphony Orchestra is organizing the Federal President's benefit concert. The concert series, the proceeds of which support social and cultural organizations, has been held annually since 1988 - from 1988 to 2005 in Berlin and since 2006 in rotation in the federal states. Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst have decided to use the proceeds from the 2025 concert to support the Elly Heuss-Knapp Foundation - German Mothers' Recovery Foundation. The foundation aims to strengthen the health of mothers, fathers and caring relatives through preventive and rehabilitation measures. All tickets for the Federal President's benefit concert include a donation to the Elly Heuss-Knapp Foundation.

In 1895 Georges Enescu moved to Paris to study at the Conservatoire, where one of his teachers was Fauré; his 1899 Second Violin Sonata partakes of this new French manner. Fauré’s First Cello Sonata was launched in 1917. A late work, the Piano Trio was first heard in 1923 and quickly taken up by the celebrated trio of Cortot, Thibaud and Casals. Ravel’s 1903 String Quartet was dedicated to his teacher Fauré.
