“Manon is a beautiful sixteen-year-old girl who loves life and cannot resist fleeting pleasures. She is charming, but amoral.” This is how choreographer Kenneth MacMillan described the heroine of his ballet Manon, inspired by abbé Prévost’s famous novel.

Against the sumptuous setting of Renaissance Italy, Kenneth MacMillan weaves a “dance tapestry rich in character that is rhapsodic and sensuous” (The New York Times). Sergei Prokofiev’s unforgettable music underscores the beauty and passion of this beloved ballet and its star-crossed lovers.

SONG OF THE EARTH // SF BALLET PREMIERE
“A man and a woman; death takes the man;
they both return to her and at the end of the ballet, we find that in death there is the promise of renewal.” Sir Kenneth MacMillan weaves a story of love, loss, and bittersweet death through poetic choreography set to Mahler.

MARGUERITE AND ARMAND // SF BALLET PREMIERE
Created in 1963 for two of ballet’s superstars, Nureyev and Fonteyn, this passionate tale draws inspiration from history’s most famous tragic love stories. Of all the ballets that Frederick Ashton created, Marguerite and Armand stands out as his most passionate as it whisks us through their tragic love affair. The lush designs tell a
tale of their own, imbuing the ballet in an unforgettable period drama.

Returning to critical and audience acclaim, this is the epitome of Sir Kenneth MacMillan. Choreographed in 1974 while he was the director of The Royal Ballet, Manon is an adaptation of Abbé Prévost’s novel L’Histoire du Chevalier des Grieux et de Manon Lescaut. A full-length ballet in three acts, Manon is considered one of MacMillan’s most notable works, showcasing his expertise of narrative choreography and acute insight into human psychology. MacMillan is at his best here: finding full expression in the impassioned duets of the central couple, visceral and desperate in their desire.

Manon

This is a masterpiece by Sir Kenneth MACMILLAN, one of the most influential British choreographers of the 20th century. It was first performed in 1965 by the Royal Ballet. The dramatic choreography expresses the psychology of the characters in careful detail, expanding the possibilities of ballet. Sergei PROKOFIEV's dramatic and colourful music combined with Sir Kenneth's choreography draw out the depth of tragedy from the original story by SHAKESPEARE. First performed by the National Ballet of Japan in October 2001, it has become a significant repertoire that has been performed many times over. The dramatic ballet demands high levels of both technique and inner expression; you can set your expectations high for this love story woven by our dancers.
