VIOLIN CONCERTO
Originally commissioned and created for our 90th Anniversary, Possokhov’s Violin Concerto reimagines Stravinsky’s celebrated score with a fresh and bold interpretation. Steeped in classical vocabulary that shows off the steely technique of our dancers, it was met with standing ovations and rave reviews as a standout piece of the next@90 festival.

MADCAP
A crowd-pleaser from our next@90 festival, Rowe’s MADCAP was decidedly dubbed a “triumph” by the San Francisco Chronicle. It features Rowe’s love of storytelling and theatrics as she masterfully dissects the anatomy of a clown. Hagström’s eerie, carnival-inspired score transports us into Rowe’s sinister world of the clown after the circus lights go dark.

GATEWAY TO THE SUN
Former SF Ballet Principal Dancer Nicolas Blanc returned to our studios to create this poetic and moving ballet in five movements, set to celebrated contemporary composer Anna Clyne’s exquisite score for cello and orchestra. Blanc models Gateway to the Sun after a poem by 13th-century Sufi mystic Rumi.

Multi-Grammy-nominated violinist Philippe Quint and members of the world-class, Chicago-based Joffrey Ballet celebrate tango legend Astor Piazzolla in a performance of music and dance.
Lauded by The Times (London) for his “bravura technique and unflagging energy,” Philippe Quint is internationally praised for his unique takes on classical core repertoire, support of contemporary composers and passion for giving new life to neglected works. For this celebration of Argentine composer and virtuoso bandoneón player Astor Piazzolla, Quint collaborates with the renowned Joffrey Ballet, one of the premier ballet companies performing today.
The year 2021 marked the centennial of Astor Piazzolla. The single most important figure in the history of tango, Piazzolla created a whole new musical genre based on Argentina’s national dance. Breaking boundaries and revolutionizing traditional tango, he introduced the world to tango nuevo: a fusion of tango, jazz, klezmer, and classical music. The Piazzolla style is bold, unique, immediately recognizable, and utterly irresistible.
Join us as Philippe Quint and his Quint Quintet are joined by the members of Joffrey Ballet to perform some of Piazzolla’s most iconic works as part of a narrative tracing the musical and personal journey of an extraordinary musician. Come and discover the man whose life story was, in his own words, "one of both angels and demons."

Multi-Grammy-nominated violinist Philippe Quint and members of the world-class, Chicago-based Joffrey Ballet celebrate tango legend Astor Piazzolla in a performance of music and dance.

The incomparable Chicago-based Joffrey Ballet returns for a dazzling evening at San Diego Civic Theatre. A crown jewel of America’s homegrown dance companies, Joffrey’s cutting-edge programs display the inestimable skill of their dancers. The program includes Liam Scarlett’s Vespertine, created for the Norwegian National Ballet in 2013 and inspired by the music of Arcangelo Corelli, creating an abstract, sensual work against a backdrop of hanging chandeliers. Joffrey ballet master Nicolas Blanc’s moving Under the Trees’ Voices, created during the pandemic, channels the power of community in the age of social distancing. The Times Are Racing is a “sneaker ballet” that draws inspiration from a variety of dance styles while matching Dan Deacon’s electronic score with youthful impulse and vigor. Creator Justin Peck, resident choreographer of New York City Ballet and Tony Award winner, was recently chosen by Steven Spielberg to choreograph the director’s 2021 remake of West Side Story.
