A program that begins in silence, almost in white noise. And that ends in the ecstasy of sound. In Scriabin's mystery music, everything dissolves in a visionary orchestral explosion of color – it was "like an ice bath, cocaine, and rainbows." It was the writer Henry Miller who once raved about "Le poème de l'extase" with this comparison. Premiered in New York in 1908, the music world had never experienced anything like it, and even today this music catapults the audience into a parallel universe. In his concert with the hr-Sinfonieorchester, conductor Oscar Jockel builds the effect layer by layer: After his own meticulously composed nothingness, the simplicity of Schubert's four-hand Fantasy in F minor seems like an intimate secret, the contrasts intensifying with Britten's "Scottish Ballad." Then Debussy's "Jeux" sheds new light – as the conductor says – on the ecstasy of the love dance, with its lively melodies and dissonant harmonies soaring upwards in triple meter. Finally, the "absolute sublimation" is achieved with Scriabin, who, as a trained philosopher, explored not only musical realms of the barely comprehensible.

If Lucas Debargue's life were ever to be made into a film, there would be a lot to tell: At the age of nine, the Frenchman began to devote himself to classical music and piano, but a few years later, he gave it all up again – playing the electric bass in a rock band and studying literature initially seemed more interesting. It wasn't until he was 20 that he returned to the piano, but he now also performed as a jazz pianist. At the renowned 2015 Tchaikovsky Competition, Debargue "only" placed fourth, but became a crowd favorite during the competition, laying the foundation for his international career.

This artist is simply incredible! In recent years, Jaeden Izik-Dzurko has collected first prizes at international piano competitions like other people collect stamps. He won three in 2022, and two more in 2024 – and those are just the most important competitions. To say that the Canadian is a magnificent pianist seems almost an understatement: Up and down the country, the press and audiences praise his outstanding technique, the depth of his interpretations, and his charisma. South Korean pianist Yeol Eum Son has been forced to cancel, due to personal reasons, and is replaced by the Russian-born pianist Anna Vinnitskaya. Based in Hamburg, Vinnitskaya is a professor of piano at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg. The Washington Post has hailed her as a true “piano lion”, and Gramophone Magazine describes her playing as unforgettable.

Perhaps the most gifted classical pianist of our time, Evgeny Kissin takes centre stage with two rarely-performed jewels of the piano concerto repertoire.

Admired – even venerated – as the heir of the great Russian piano tradition, Kissin has an impressive list of awards, firsts and ‘youngest-evers’ to his name, including a Grammy for his recording of Prokofiev piano concertos with the Philharmonia.

His extraordinary programme brings together two bold, brilliant piano concertos by Prokofiev and Scriabin, alongside two dramatic Russian symphonic tone poems: Rachmaninov’s evocative The Rock, and Mussorgsky’s stormy A Night on the Bare Mountain which promises to thrill audiences with its wild and terrifying Witches’ Sabbath.

The best young talents compete in major competitions, often laying the foundation for a brilliant career. One young pianist who is currently making a name for himself in the music world is Jaeden Izik-Dzurko. Winner of the 2024 Concours musical international de Montréal and the 2024 Leeds International Piano Competition, he is currently performing in recitals and with major orchestras throughout Europe through the Steinway Prizewinner Concerts Network. With a multifaceted solo program, he will make his debut at this year's Rheingau Music Festival as part of our "Excellent!" series for award-winning young talents.

Since 2019, Evgeni Bozhanov has been a professor at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen - in addition to his international career as a pianist - where he looks after the keyboard stars of tomorrow. The Bulgarian pianist, who has won the international Frédéric Chopin Competition in Varna, among other things, is now putting on a duo evening with one of these promising talents, his master student Hao Tian. Hao Tian, ​​who was born in China in 2002, can already look back on a number of successes in international competitions himself and joined Evgeni Bozhanov's master class in Essen in 2022. For the Piano Extra II, he has chosen two touchstones of piano literature. Robert Schumann's "Carnaval", for example, which is one of the composer's most important piano cycles. After the turbulent scenes of a masked ball in Schumann's Opus 9, Alexander Scriabin's two-movement sonata takes us out to sea: in the first movement of the "Sonata-Fantaisie" composed in Genoa, the composer evokes a calm evening atmosphere with nighttime moonlight, after which it becomes stormy - in the ocean whipped up by wave-like triplets.

Born in Tokyo in 1998, the Japanese pianist began playing the piano at the age of three. Was the world a better place in the Romantic era? Alexander Melnikov explores this question through his piano recital – following the theme of our Biennale entitled Paradise lost? On the threat to nature. With Schubert’s Wanderer Fantasy, Melnikov leads you through idyllic landscapes and man-made chasms, reveals the poetry of Schumann’s Waldszenen, and shows atmospheric images of nature in Franz Liszt’s piano works. The forest appears here as a place of retreat – from the self and from encroaching industrialisation. By contrast, Alexander Scriabin prophesies the destruction of the world in the grand conflagration of Vers la flamme.

Liu rewarded the ecstatic and sold-out audience with seven encores—works by Rameau, Chopin, Satie, Liszt, Albéniz, and Kapustin—before calling it an evening. He now returns with an evocative new program that features Tchaikovsky’s The Seasons; the Scherzo from Felix Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, arranged by Rachmaninoff; and Scriabin’s poetic Fourth Piano Sonata. Liu concludes the recital in unforgettable fashion with one of Prokofiev’s mighty “war sonatas.”

What happens when you give Herbert Fritsch, a brilliant actor and director with a penchant for the wacky, a symphony concert to play? It's impossible to say for sure, but what we can say is that Fritsch is venturing into the concert field! Until recently, his turbulent and absurd Don Giovanni raged through the Behrenstraße as a libertine on the verge of a nervous breakdown, and if Wagner was to be at the Komische, then it was Fritsch. This season he's chasing the Florentine hat alongside Herbert Grönemeyer.

Together with General Music Director James Gaffigan, Fritsch presents György Ligeti's groundbreaking Poème symphonique for 100 metronomes and takes us into his very personal musical world, from Carl Maria von Weber to Iannis Xenakis, with all its rough edges. 170 years after Leoš Janáček's birth in 1854, Lisa Moore presents the composer’s three major works for piano, while centering her program around early 20th century music inspired by imagery and features of the natural world, life cycles and humanity. The concert includes the New York premiere of Meadow Bridgham’s Seventeen Years – the life cycle of a cicada – celebrating this insect's 2024 rare double brood.

In 2018 St George’s held the first solo recital with that year’s winner, pianist Eric Lu, and it was a truly wonderful moment: musical history in the making. In 2021 we did the same, with Alim Beisembayev. In September this year, the 21st edition of the competition will welcome a diverse line-up of brilliant musicians to Leeds, and St George’s will then host one of the very first public recitals by its winner.

It is a bit like a homecoming when the world-class pianist Haiou Zhang comes to Duisburg for a piano extra. One of his first concerts was not far from here, in Oberhausen - he was still a student at the time. Today, Haiou Zhang is praised in the specialist press for both his sharp analytical mind and the expressive intensity of his playing. He demonstrates his immense skill with a program that not only shows the most diverse facets of piano literature, but also exciting connections between eras. The program begins with "Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue", a fascinating work by Johann Sebastian Bach: without regard to conventions and full of excessive chromaticism. And he was in turn a role model for Claude Debussy, who refers to Johann Sebastian Bach's "Well-Tempered Clavier" in his Préludes, some of which Haiou Zhang plays. Or Ludwig van Beethoven, who initially followed in the footsteps of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart with his piano works, but then set out on his own shores and took the piano sonata genre into completely new dimensions. Haiou Zhang plays his piano recital on a special instrument, because "certain timbres and nuances that I want can only be realized on a Bechstein."
