When a violinist makes a debut with a top orchestra like the Berliner Philharmoniker, it’s no easy task. After all, seated around them are more than two dozen violinists who often perform as soloists themselves — and who listen with correspondingly sharp ears. All the more remarkable, then, was Augustin Hadelich’s first appearance with the “Berliners” in 2021: the wish to perform with him actually came from within the orchestra itself — a true badge of honor.

Alexander Malofeev's debut was brilliant! The pianist stepped in for the ill Evgeny Kissin at a concert of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra - and the audience could hardly contain itself. The Frankfurt audience rewarded Malofeev's virtuoso playing with thunderous applause, not so much for its power as for its melody and transparency. It was high time for the 23-year-old to give a recital at the Alte Oper. Malofeev readily admits that he feels most at home alone on stage. He then gives an insight into his world of sound: "It's always my own space, even when hundreds of people are listening. I let them in. I like to create my own space. In the Mozart Hall, Malofeev creates a sound space that spans Scandinavia, France, Vienna and his Russian homeland: Characteristic pieces glowing in intense colours.

Some composers think bigger, but it takes a special sort of genius to create a whole new musical universe. Everything about Scriabin’s Third Symphony is larger than life, from the enormous orchestra to the galactic ambition of Scriabin’s inspiration – music that he described as ‘ecstatic’, ‘drunken’ and even ‘divine’! If you like Mahler, you’ll love ‘The Divine Poem’, and for Vasily Petrenko, it’s a passion – a musical experience that doesn’t come around every day.

Music has the power to express emotions that we have no words for: happiness, grief, ecstasy and the dissolution of boundaries. William Walton, one of the most important English composers of the 20th century, finds in his neo-Romantic viola concerto a path between intimacy and emergence. The bizarre music-mystic Scriabin searched for a great synaesthetic mystery that was supposed to put humanity in a state of ecstasy. The closest he came to achieving this goal was with his captivating Poème de l’extase. Wagner's Tristan und Isolde is about the bonding of two people against all societal conventions, the celebration of an all-consuming and fatal love.

Doppelganger: Shadow of the Self
"Doppelgänger: Shadows of the Ego." In her program with this title, Svetlana Andreeva embarks on a search for the self in music. It should be said at the outset that she has long since found her (artistic) self – as evidenced not least by her brilliant victory at the Concours international de piano d'Orléans 2024. The competition is entirely dedicated to the music of the 20th and 21st centuries – a home game for the Ukrainian, who is a passionate interpreter of contemporary works and studied composition in addition to piano. In her program, Svetlana Andreeva focuses almost exclusively on early 20th-century repertoire: With Leoš Janáček, she gropes her way through the mists of his eponymous cycle, peers behind Karol Szymanowski's masks, and experiences descent into hell and redemption in Alexander Scriabin's "Black" and "White" Mass. In 1913, Sibelius received several commissions, the first of which came from the United States and in particular from the composer Horatio Parker, professor of composition at Yale University since 1894. In the spring of 1913, Parker had asked Sibelius for some songs to be sent to American schools, receiving three of them, Autumn Song , The Sun upon the Lake is low and A Cavalry Catch , which would be published by the American composer in 1915 in the collection The Progressive Music Series under the title Three Songs for American Schools . It was Parker himself who later put Sibelius in touch with the wealthy patron Carl Stoeckel, whose father, Gustav Jacob, had been the first professor of music at Yale from 1855 to his retirement in 1896. Stoeckel and his wife, Ellen, were the daughter of Robbins Battell, one of Connecticut's most influential men, both economically and culturally. Their father, Joseph, had built a sumptuous residence in Norfolk, which he named the White House, after the official residence of the President of the United States. Extremely cultured and passionate about music and painting, the couple had created and financed a festival in Norfolk, which is still held every summer under the name of the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival and is currently managed by Yale University. To host the events, a 2,000-seat concert hall was inaugurated on June 6, 1906. Among the composers whose music was performed on that occasion was Parker, who, in early summer 1913, sent Stoeckel a list of musicians to invite to Norfolk. The patron responded on August 18, saying he would be pleased to begin with Sibelius, to whom Parker sent an invitation to travel to Norfolk in June 1914 to conduct several works, including one, intended to last no more than 15 minutes, which he had composed especially for the occasion. Gripped by financial constraints, Sibelius accepted the commission, as can be seen from what he wrote to his publisher Breitkopf & Härtel on 24 October 1913: “You will not be angry if I speak to you frankly. As you no doubt know, I am working on new major works for a series of concerts which I will probably give in Europe within a year. I have therefore refused all offers to conduct. Having had to face large expenses this year, I have been forced, contrary to my principles, to accept commissions. I especially needed 20,000 marks for the accommodation of my eldest daughter, who has married. I have obtained this sum through two works – a symphonic poem for America [ The Oceanides ] and a pantomime for Denmark [ Scaramouche ].”

A program that begins in silence, almost in white noise. And that ends in the ecstasy of sound. In Scriabin's mystery music, everything dissolves in a visionary orchestral explosion of color – it was "like an ice bath, cocaine, and rainbows." It was the writer Henry Miller who once raved about "Le poème de l'extase" with this comparison. Premiered in New York in 1908, the music world had never experienced anything like it, and even today this music catapults the audience into a parallel universe. In his concert with the hr-Sinfonieorchester, conductor Oscar Jockel builds the effect layer by layer: After his own meticulously composed nothingness, the simplicity of Schubert's four-hand Fantasy in F minor seems like an intimate secret, the contrasts intensifying with Britten's "Scottish Ballad." Then Debussy's "Jeux" sheds new light – as the conductor says – on the ecstasy of the love dance, with its lively melodies and dissonant harmonies soaring upwards in triple meter. Finally, the "absolute sublimation" is achieved with Scriabin, who, as a trained philosopher, explored not only musical realms of the barely comprehensible.

If Lucas Debargue's life were ever to be made into a film, there would be a lot to tell: At the age of nine, the Frenchman began to devote himself to classical music and piano, but a few years later, he gave it all up again – playing the electric bass in a rock band and studying literature initially seemed more interesting. It wasn't until he was 20 that he returned to the piano, but he now also performed as a jazz pianist. Since 2019, Evgeni Bozhanov has been a professor at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen - in addition to his international career as a pianist - where he looks after the keyboard stars of tomorrow. The Bulgarian pianist, who has won the international Frédéric Chopin Competition in Varna, among other things, is now putting on a duo evening with one of these promising talents, his master student Hao Tian. Hao Tian, who was born in China in 2002, can already look back on a number of successes in international competitions himself and joined Evgeni Bozhanov's master class in Essen in 2022. For the Piano Extra II, he has chosen two touchstones of piano literature. Robert Schumann's "Carnaval", for example, which is one of the composer's most important piano cycles. After the turbulent scenes of a masked ball in Schumann's Opus 9, Alexander Scriabin's two-movement sonata takes us out to sea: in the first movement of the "Sonata-Fantaisie" composed in Genoa, the composer evokes a calm evening atmosphere with nighttime moonlight, after which it becomes stormy - in the ocean whipped up by wave-like triplets.
