What happens when you give Herbert Fritsch, a brilliant actor and director with a penchant for the wacky, a symphony concert to play? Schubert’s Impromptus are filled with lyricism and profound emotions ranging from anguish to serenity and everything in between. Schumann composed Fantasiestücke, op. 12 during a period when he was prevented from marrying the pianist Clara Wieck by her father. He was so distraught that he dedicated the eight short pieces to another woman, taunting the one he loved. As in Schubert’s Impromptus, the emotional palette is a wide-ranging one. Ravel’s Gaspard de la Nuit is one of the most ferociously difficult pieces of the piano repertoire. In fact, Ravel intended to make the final movement even more difficult than Balakirev’s Islamey, another work that puts pianists to the test. The three-movement work was inspired by three macabre poems by Aloysius Bertrand, and captures their dark spirit in endlessly innovative ways.

Praised for her “artistic, clear and enlightened” performances (BBC Magazine) that showcase “refined virtuosity and underlying passion” (Ritmo Magazine), Bulgarian pianist Anna Petrova embraces a multifaceted career as a soloist, chamber musician, educator, and artistic director. She has been the recipient of top honors and awards at international piano competition, including the Queen Elisabeth and Jose Roca Competitions, leading her to perform in renowned venues such as Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and the National Center for the Performing Arts in Beijing. An avid chamber musician, Petrova is a member of two award-winning ensembles: the Carr-Petrova Duo, and Iris Trio. Alongside her performing career, she shares her passion for music education as the Assistant Professor of Piano at the University of Louisville.

Alice Sara Ott, in her NY Phil debut, performs Ravel’s lush, jazz-influenced G-major Piano Concerto. The program — led by Karina Canellakis, also in her NY Phil debut — begins with Webern’s remarkably spare, yet haunting Six Pieces. The concert’s two tone poems look past earthly life: Richard Strauss’s meditation on the death of an artist, and Scriabin’s mystical and rhapsodic Poem of Ecstasy.

A program of color: It opens with Anna Clyne’s Color Field, inspired in part by the vibrancy of a Mark Rothko painting. Followed by Richard Wagner’s ecstatic Prelude and Liebestod from Tristan and Isolde, and Franz Liszt’s Prometheus. The program closes with Alexander Scriabin’s Prometheus, Poem of Fire. When Alexander Scriabin’s wrote Prometheus, Poem of Fire, he conceived of a “light organ” that would project colors corresponding to his music. Prometheus premiered in 1911 with future BSO Music Director Serge Koussevitzky, whose 150th birthday year we celebrate in 2024.

Beatrice Rana attracted international attention in 2011, when she won first prize and all special prizes at the Montreal International Competition at age eighteen. Rana performs at the world’s most esteemed concert halls and festivals including Vienna’s Konzerthaus and Musikverein, Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, and New York’s Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall. She collaborates with conductors such as Paavo Järvi, Leonard Slatkin, and Zubin Mehta. In 2015, Rana’s first album with Antonio Pappano and the Accademia Nazionale Santa Cecilia di Roma, featuring piano concertos of Prokofiev and Tchaikovsky, received international acclaim, including the prestigious Gramophone Editor’s Choice and BBC Music Magazine’s Newcomer of the Year Award. In June 2013, Rana won Silver and the Audience Award at the prestigious Van Cliburn Competition.

Truly a “musician’s musician,” Zlata Chochieva’s recording of the complete Chopin Etudes was hailed by Gramophone Magazine as “one of the most consistently inspired, masterfully executed and beautiful-sounding versions I can recall” and was subsequently included in that magazine’s list of the top fifty greatest Chopin recordings in history!  Since then, she has become known for her distinctive musical “voice” and has risen to the top ranks of amongst pianists worldwide. In his Piano Concerto in F-sharp Minor, Aleksandr Scriabin blends the pianist and the orchestra into an inseparable musical whole. We can look forward to a celebratory union between the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Roland Pöntinen. One of the most distinctive artists of his generation and a longtime CAMA favorite, Sir Stephen Hough is a true Renaissance man, combining a distinguished international career as a pianist with those of composer, writer, and painter. Named by The Economist as one of “Twenty Living Polymaths” (a person of great learning and varied expertise), he was knighted in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in 2022 and was the first classical performer to be awarded a MacArthur Fellowship (“Genius Grant”) in 2001. Sir Stephen brings his trademark eloquence and precision to what will be his fifth Masterseries recital appearance at the Lobero, with music by composers close to his heart. From the mysterious and mystical realms of Mompou and Scriabin to the evocative imagery of Debussy and Hough’s own Partita, Hough leaves his stamp on all of this repertoire. His recital closes with a suite of pieces selected from the second volume of Liszt’s Années de pèlerinage—the famous “Petrarch Sonnets” as well as the astounding “Dante Sonata.”

Nikolay Khozyainov is one of the world’s most remarkable pianists. His musicality and formidable technique have thrilled audiences and his recitals and concerto engagements include sold out performances on the world’s foremost stages. In 2012, Khozyainov won First Prize at both the Dublin International Piano Competition and Second Prize at the Sydney International Piano Competition, where he also received several special prizes, notably “Best performance of both Concertos voted by members of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra”, “People’s Choice”, “youngest finalist”, and for his performances of Liszt and Schubert.

Our final concert of the 2023 concert season features a recital by pianist Clayton Stephenson, the first Black finalist at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2022 and a 2022 Gilmore Young Artist. Hailed for “extraordinary narrative and poetic gifts” and interpretations that are “fresh, incisive and characterfully alive” (Gramophone), he is committed to making an impact on the world through his music-making. Now studying in the Harvard-New England Conservatory Dual Degree Program, Stephenson grew up in New York City and began piano lessons and age 7. He was accepted into the Julliard Outreach Music Advance Program for underprivileged children the next year and credits the generous support of community programs with providing him musical inspiration and resources along the way. Making his Tippet Rise debut, Stephenson will perform a program Domenico Scarlatti’s Sonata in E Major, Scriabin’s Sonata No. 4 in F-sharp Major, Beethoven’s Sonata Appassionata, a virtuoso transcription of a work by George Gershwin, an Art Tatum arrangement of Tea for Two, as well as Hiromi Uehara’s The Tom and Jerry Show.
