This exciting and unusual three-concerto program features acclaimed soloist Evgeny Kissin, known for his charismatic virtuosity. These three sparkling but rarely heard concertos span the late Romantic/early modern periods. The BSO has only played Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s concerto once in 1914, and Scriabin’s on only two prior occasions, most recently in 2001. Andrey Boreyko leads this all-Russian program, opening with Rimsky-Korsakov’s brilliantly colorful Russian Easter Overture.

Doppelganger: Shadow of the Self
"Doppelgänger: Shadows of the Ego." In her program with this title, Svetlana Andreeva embarks on a search for the self in music. It should be said at the outset that she has long since found her (artistic) self – as evidenced not least by her brilliant victory at the Concours international de piano d'Orléans 2024. The competition is entirely dedicated to the music of the 20th and 21st centuries – a home game for the Ukrainian, who is a passionate interpreter of contemporary works and studied composition in addition to piano. In her program, Svetlana Andreeva focuses almost exclusively on early 20th-century repertoire: With Leoš Janáček, she gropes her way through the mists of his eponymous cycle, peers behind Karol Szymanowski's masks, and experiences descent into hell and redemption in Alexander Scriabin's "Black" and "White" Mass. A program that begins in silence, almost in white noise. And that ends in the ecstasy of sound. In Scriabin's mystery music, everything dissolves in a visionary orchestral explosion of color – it was "like an ice bath, cocaine, and rainbows." It was the writer Henry Miller who once raved about "Le poème de l'extase" with this comparison. Premiered in New York in 1908, the music world had never experienced anything like it, and even today this music catapults the audience into a parallel universe. In his concert with the hr-Sinfonieorchester, conductor Oscar Jockel builds the effect layer by layer: After his own meticulously composed nothingness, the simplicity of Schubert's four-hand Fantasy in F minor seems like an intimate secret, the contrasts intensifying with Britten's "Scottish Ballad." Then Debussy's "Jeux" sheds new light – as the conductor says – on the ecstasy of the love dance, with its lively melodies and dissonant harmonies soaring upwards in triple meter. Finally, the "absolute sublimation" is achieved with Scriabin, who, as a trained philosopher, explored not only musical realms of the barely comprehensible.

If Lucas Debargue's life were ever to be made into a film, there would be a lot to tell: At the age of nine, the Frenchman began to devote himself to classical music and piano, but a few years later, he gave it all up again – playing the electric bass in a rock band and studying literature initially seemed more interesting. It wasn't until he was 20 that he returned to the piano, but he now also performed as a jazz pianist. At the renowned 2015 Tchaikovsky Competition, Debargue "only" placed fourth, but became a crowd favorite during the competition, laying the foundation for his international career.

He won three in 2022, and two more in 2024 – and those are just the most important competitions. Perhaps the most gifted classical pianist of our time, Evgeny Kissin takes centre stage with two rarely-performed jewels of the piano concerto repertoire.

Admired – even venerated – as the heir of the great Russian piano tradition, Kissin has an impressive list of awards, firsts and ‘youngest-evers’ to his name, including a Grammy for his recording of Prokofiev piano concertos with the Philharmonia.

The best young talents compete in major competitions, often laying the foundation for a brilliant career. One young pianist who is currently making a name for himself in the music world is Jaeden Izik-Dzurko. Winner of the 2024 Concours musical international de Montréal and the 2024 Leeds International Piano Competition, he is currently performing in recitals and with major orchestras throughout Europe through the Steinway Prizewinner Concerts Network. With a multifaceted solo program, he will make his debut at this year's Rheingau Music Festival as part of our "Excellent!" series for award-winning young talents.

Since 2019, Evgeni Bozhanov has been a professor at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen - in addition to his international career as a pianist - where he looks after the keyboard stars of tomorrow. The Bulgarian pianist, who has won the international Frédéric Chopin Competition in Varna, among other things, is now putting on a duo evening with one of these promising talents, his master student Hao Tian. Hao Tian, ​​who was born in China in 2002, can already look back on a number of successes in international competitions himself and joined Evgeni Bozhanov's master class in Essen in 2022. For the Piano Extra II, he has chosen two touchstones of piano literature. Robert Schumann's "Carnaval", for example, which is one of the composer's most important piano cycles. After the turbulent scenes of a masked ball in Schumann's Opus 9, Alexander Scriabin's two-movement sonata takes us out to sea: in the first movement of the "Sonata-Fantaisie" composed in Genoa, the composer evokes a calm evening atmosphere with nighttime moonlight, after which it becomes stormy - in the ocean whipped up by wave-like triplets.

Join us for an unforgettable evening of chamber music at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, featuring the acclaimed pianist Juho Pohjonen. This special event, part of the Art of the Recital series, will take place on Thursday, February 20, 2025, at 7:30 pm in the intimate setting of the Daniel and Joanna S. Rose Studio at CMS.

The program promises a journey through the evolution of piano music, starting with the world premiere of Jyrki Linjama's "Prélude oublié for Piano" (2024), followed by masterpieces from Alexander Scriabin, Franz Liszt, Ludwig van Beethoven, and Olivier Messiaen. Highlights include Scriabin's "Sonata No. 6 for Piano, Op. 62" and "Sonata No. 7 for Piano, Op. 64, White Mass," Liszt's "Après une Lecture du Dante: Fantasia quasi Sonata for Piano," Beethoven's "Sonata for Piano, Op. 27, No. 1, Quasi una fantasia," and Messiaen's "Le baiser de l’Enfant-Jésus from Vingt regards sur l’Enfant-Jésus for Piano."

Juho Pohjonen, celebrated for his "impeccable technique" (Washington Post) and "elegant musicianship" (New York Times), brings his expertise and passion for Scandinavian music to the forefront, offering a showcase of works by Finnish composers alongside the classics. An alum of CMS’s Bowers Program, Pohjonen enjoys an ongoing association with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, making this performance a homecoming of sorts.

The event will last approximately 2 hours, including an intermission, allowing audiences to fully immerse themselves in the beauty and complexity of the music. The Daniel and Joanna S. Rose Studio at CMS, located in the Rose Building at 165 West 65th Street, New York, NY 10023, provides the perfect acoustics and ambiance for this musical exploration.

Was the world a better place in the Romantic era? Alexander Melnikov explores this question through his piano recital – following the theme of our Biennale entitled Paradise lost? On the threat to nature. With Schubert’s Wanderer Fantasy, Melnikov leads you through idyllic landscapes and man-made chasms, reveals the poetry of Schumann’s Waldszenen, and shows atmospheric images of nature in Franz Liszt’s piano works. The forest appears here as a place of retreat – from the self and from encroaching industrialisation. By contrast, Alexander Scriabin prophesies the destruction of the world in the grand conflagration of Vers la flamme.

Well, that might be asking too much for most of us, but not for our guest artist and her composer husband, Bella Hristova and David Ludwig. When they married, he wrote for her the concerto we are performing for you in this concert, and we’ve invited her to be the soloist. Let the sparks fly and feel the love on Valentine’s Weekend!

Pianist Alexander Malofeev (born October 2001) is hailed as one of the most prominent artists of his generation. He began studying at the Gnessin Moscow Special School of Music and made his breakthrough at age 13, winning First Prize at the 2014 International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians. “Contrary to what could be expected of a youngster …, he demonstrated not only high technical accuracy but also an incredible maturity. Crystal clear sounds and perfect balance revealed his exceptional ability” (Amadeus).

After skyrocketing to fame in the International Chopin Piano Competition, Bruce Liu gave his New York recital debut at Carnegie Hall in 2023, a performance that exceeded even the highest of expectations. Liu rewarded the ecstatic and sold-out audience with seven encores—works by Rameau, Chopin, Satie, Liszt, Albéniz, and Kapustin—before calling it an evening. He now returns with an evocative new program that features Tchaikovsky’s The Seasons; the Scherzo from Felix Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, arranged by Rachmaninoff; and Scriabin’s poetic Fourth Piano Sonata. Liu concludes the recital in unforgettable fashion with one of Prokofiev’s mighty “war sonatas.”

First prize winner of the 18th Chopin Piano Competition 2021 in Warsaw, Bruce Liu’s “playing of breathtaking beauty” (BBC Music Magazine) has secured his reputation as one of the most exciting talents of his generation and contributed to a “rock-star status in the classical music world” (The Globe and Mail).

What happens when you give Herbert Fritsch, a brilliant actor and director with a penchant for the wacky, a symphony concert to play? It's impossible to say for sure, but what we can say is that Fritsch is venturing into the concert field! Until recently, his turbulent and absurd Don Giovanni raged through the Behrenstraße as a libertine on the verge of a nervous breakdown, and if Wagner was to be at the Komische, then it was Fritsch. This season he's chasing the Florentine hat alongside Herbert Grönemeyer.

Together with General Music Director James Gaffigan, Fritsch presents György Ligeti's groundbreaking Poème symphonique for 100 metronomes and takes us into his very personal musical world, from Carl Maria von Weber to Iannis Xenakis, with all its rough edges. Don't worry, he won't sing. Well, probably not. We're excited!
