Hancher’s favorite dance company returns to Iowa City for the first time in 10 years! American Icons celebrates dynamic works by four trailblazing artists of the 20th century: The Joffrey Ballet co-founders Robert Joffrey and Gerald Arpino, Joffrey alum Glen Tetley, and prolific dance pioneer Martha Graham. The Joffrey dancers will also work with University of Iowa dance students while in Iowa City. Help us welcome a beloved company back to the Hancher stage.

In a season entitled “American Legacies,” the Company explores Martha Graham’s relation to Americana and Modernism. Graham works to be performed include her visceral masterwork The Rite of Spring and her extraordinary collaboration with Aaron Copland and Isamu Noguchi, Appalachian Spring.

Presented by Graham Studio Series and performed by Graham’s acclaimed second Company, this light-hearted, family-friendly event will bring Martha Graham “herself” onto the stage… Graham Company alum Jesse Factor will appear as the choreographer in all her dramatic regalia humorously guiding us through some of the choreographic highlights of her career!

Westbeth Artists Housing and Center for the Arts

An open rehearsal on the eve of the Company’s tour to Spain, Germany, and Italy, offers an intimate look at two works that span 75 years. Errand into the Maze (1947), Martha Graham’s transformation of the myth of the Minotaur as a journey into a woman’s battle with fear; and Hofesh Shechter’s rapturous CAVE, created for the Company in 2022.
