Marking its world staged premiere, Joseph Summer’s The Tempest brings Shakespeare’s final masterpiece to the operatic stage with vivid imagination and emotional depth. The opera—set to a libretto by the composer’s daughter, Eve Summer—transforms the tale of exile, forgiveness, and renewal into a richly layered musical world. Summer’s tonal yet adventurous score brims with ensemble writing of exceptional beauty, from tender duets to exuberant finales, offering a contemporary voice deeply attuned to Shakespeare’s spirit.

This fresh take on one of the greatest operas ever written will be presented as part of Binghamton’s LUMA Projection Arts Festival in a new English language, 60-minute adaptation.  Featuring the gorgeous visual imaginings of an international team of designers, including Stefanos Koroneos and Chara, The Magic Flute retains all the charm, mystery, magic, and humor of the original.

Anna, the most desired and respected domme in town, has built her life around getting revenge on Giovanni, the local Mafia Don, and the man who killed her father. She teams up with Elvira, an FBI Agent who has centered her career around bringing Giovanni to justice. Leporello has made a life-supporting Giovanni through thick and thin but dreams of quiet retirement. And Giovanni stands at the center of it all, including the mythos he has built inside his mind.

I Am a Dreamer Who no Longer Dreams is the first production of our season exploring intimate portraits of hopes and dreams. This poignant and topical work navigates both compassion and the dark side of humanity through the intersecting lives of two immigrants. The story chronicles the complicated parallels and experiences of Rosa, an undocumented immigrant from Mexico; and her court appointed attorney, Singa, herself an immigrant from Indonesia with a green card. As their voices blend and connect, we all experience the oneness that is the human condition, the storytelling and song of our collective inner child. With music composed by Jorge Sosa and a libretto by Cerise Lim Jacobs, the opera will be performed in English.

In Suor Angelica, Puccini’s intimate score unfolds within a world shaped by memory. In this production, the convent is inhabited by ghosts — women who once obeyed, women who once loved, and women who once surrendered something unspeakable. This season continues our exploration of what opera can be today, approaching Suor Angelica not as a museum object, but as a work shaped by the lives of these women.
