In celebration of Asian Heritage Month, Conductor Naomi Woo curates a program of new music by composers inspired by coastal soundscapes. Montreal-based composer Keiko Devaux’s Ere captures the random complexity of a flock of birds in flight. Former VSO Composer in Residence Jocelyn Morlock’s Blue Sun (for violin and viola) evokes the ghostly afterimage that lingers after a glimpse of the sun. Her Icarus, Landing explores the shifting mental states as an illness winds its way to an inexorable close. Vancouver-based composer Robyn Jacob’s A World in Each responds to the 75th commemoration of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Naomi Woo takes to the piano to perform Alexina Louie’s “Memories in an Ancient Garden”, from Scenes from a Jade Terrace. The program flows to a conclusion with Devaux’s Ebb, an extraordinary study in the fluidity of nature.

VSO’s season concludes with Vermont composer Alexandra du Bois’ Fanfare inspired by the civil rights movement. Morlock’s evocative piece follows, a tribute to the tragic yet inspirational life and death of Canadian teen Amanda Todd, performed in partnership with the Me2 Orchestra, an organization battling stigma against people suffering from mental health issues.

The Royal Conservatory of Music

Experience the captivating blend of music and dance at "The Wolf of Lafontaine: Song & Dance," a mesmerizing event curated by Alex Prior, taking place at the Winspear Centre on Thursday, April 25 at 7:30 PM. This unique performance shines a spotlight on some of today's most brilliant composers, featuring the premiere of Ian Cusson's "Le loup de Lafontaine - Suite for Orchestra in Three Scenes." This evocative piece brings the legend of The Wolf of Lafontaine to life, accompanied by the talents of Ballet Edmonton and the Chronos Vocal Ensemble.

Ian Cusson, a composer of Métis and French-Canadian descent, explores themes of Canadian Indigenous experience, mixed-racial identity, and the intersection of Western and Indigenous cultures. His work, inspired by the cautionary tale set in the small Ontario community of Lafontaine in 1902, delves into the dynamics between settler and Indigenous communities during a time of mistrust, united only by the common goal of confronting a menacing wolf.

The evening's program also includes premieres by Jocelyn Morlock and Emilie Cecilia Lebel, alongside various songs for a capella choir, promising an unforgettable journey through contemporary music. Choreography for "Le loup de Lafontaine" is provided by Wen Wei Wang, with costume design by Linda Chow and lighting design by Dorrie Deutschendorf, ensuring a visually stunning presentation.

The musicians of the VSO are thrilled to be back to playing the series they curate, the VSO Chamber Players! It’s a joy to share this music in the intimate and acoustically-brilliant Pyatt Hall for four concert programs, each with an evening and matinee option.

Our February concert opens with Jocelyn Morlock’s Bird in the Tangled Sky, an early example of Jocelyn Morlock’s love of birds, and one of the first pieces to launch her international career.  Mozart’s operatic and visionary Flute Quartet in A Major then leads to the great Canadian Claude Vivier’s haunting and colouristic quartet, Paramirabo.

Director Nicole Paiement and the New Music Ensemble celebrate the works of composers at SFCM, while honoring two groundbreaking composers we lost in the last year. Luckadoo (‘23) wanted to perform a new clarinet concerto and decided to take matters into his own hands when he wrote Phenomenologies. Jay Cruz (‘23) represents composers from SFCM’s Technology and Applied Composition (TAC) program. SFCM composition faculty David Garner’s Cello Capriccio incorporates his compositional system of “Tonal Serialism.” Kaija Saariaho and Jocelyn Morlock were both deeply influential artists and NME’s performance of their works are in their honor.

Embark on a musical odyssey that embraces the past through a modern lens! Opening with Valerie Coleman’s 2021 “Fanfare for Uncommon Times”, this program presents new takes on old ideas. Gulda’s rhythmic “Cello Concerto” runs the gamut of musical styles from Renaissance Dance to Rock and Roll, German Ländler to big band jazz, and everything in between! “Oiseaux bleus et sauvages” (Birds Blue and Wild), Morlock’s playful take on birdsong, embodies a sense of mysticism. And pioneering American composer Howard Hanson’s Symphony No. 2 “Romantic” combines power and tenderness reminiscent of 19th century Romanticism.
