In the summer of 1782, just before marrying, Mozart began work on his Great but incomplete Mass in C minor. Having encountered the masterpieces of Bach and Handel, Mozart began to reappraise his values as a composer. The result was the dark and otherworldly music Mozart completed as the torso of his score—a setting of the Ordinary of the Mass more profound in substance and grand in scale than any he had written before. Sir John Rutter conducts Mozart's monumental Great Mass in C minor, the culmination of a programme that includes the composer’s playful symphony composed during a brief stay in Linz and the Regina coeli, which comprises some of the most sublime music Mozart wrote for the church.

The return of Angela Hewitt is a not-to-be-missed event. Mozart’s Concert-Rondo was a “new and improved” ending for a much earlier concerto, designed to please the audiences in Vienna. Between 1784 and 1786, Mozart completed a remarkable twelve concertos, including the sublime C major (latterly nicknamed the Elvira Madigan) and the earthshattering C minor—one of only two that the legendary composer wrote in a minor key. Finzi’s Eclogue is a dialogue between piano and strings, a nostalgic and quintessentially British work worth discovering.

Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s Ballade sets a wild and windswept tone for a concert that ends with a symphony inspired by the ruins of the chapel at the Palace of Holyrood, full of fierce energy and which even hints at the inevitable and typical Scottish thunderstorm! An inspirational game-changer, Karina Canellakis has blazed a trail for female conductors since winning the Sir Georg Solti Conducting Award in 2016, being the first woman to conduct the First Night of the BBC Proms in 2019 and becoming the Principal Guest Conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra in 2020. Pixels Ensemble is a versatile group of chamber music players with a shared interest in performing the finest repertoire, from the classical period to the present day. Its players are all established soloists, chamber musicians, recording artists, orchestral principals and explorers of contemporary music. Formed in 2016 by pianist and director Ian Buckle, the group appears in a wide range of line-ups and combinations, lending itself to innovative programming and enabling huge variety within individual concerts. The are performing a work by Rebecca Clarke who is described as one of the most distinguished British female composers of the inter-war generation . In addition they offer Elgar’s Piano Quintet, described by the Gramophone magazine as “big chamber music, with at times an almost orchestral sonority to it.” Their programme is completed with a classic Mozart piano concerto providing an intimate chamber music quality.

Mozart never completed his Great Mass in C minor. But what he managed to write is among his most beautiful and magnificent music. At the first performance, his wife Constanze was one of the sopranos and sang the divinely beautiful aria "Et incarnatus est", an aria that makes time stand still. In the Concert Hall, it will be the American soprano Liv Redpath, who has previously impressed with her unusually clear voice.

Kazakh pianist Dina makes a welcome return to our series with four timeless sets of variations. Based on a simple violin theme, Bach’s epic Chaconne was transformed into this brilliant showpiece by Italian composer Feruccio Busoni in 1916. Also creating a dazzling display from simple elements are Mozart’s delightful variations on ‘Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star’. Schubert’s dramatic variations on his ‘Rosamunde’ theme build tension by appearing to rush towards the finale. Dina ends with Brahms’s variations on the famous Caprice by Paganini. With rich invention and startling originality, Clara Schumann referred to them as ‘witches’ variations’.

There were so many unexpected musical jokes in the new symphony that the critics did not know what to think. Today, fortunately, we know how to appreciate Beethoven's harsh humor.

An evening in the company of Michael Collins is one well-spent, as he brings his deeply-held musicality and mastery of both the clarinet and the conductor’s podium to the Ulster Hall. This concert opens with Grażyana Bacewicz’s, vibrant, driving Concerto for String Orchestra, before Michael performs Crusell’s Second Clarinet Concerto, full of exuberance and lyrical grace and Busoni’s Concertino, a virtuosic 20th century tour-de-force written in the style of Mozart. And it’s Mozart, with whom Michael has a special affinity, that closes the concert; the exhilarating pinnacle of all his symphonic writing, Symphony No.41

More Than Mozart

Elegant, buoyant and gloriously witty, Mozart’s Flute Concerto puts paid to the composer’s spurious claims that he couldn’t stand the instrument. In the hands of the SCO’s charismatic Principal Flute André Cebrián, it forms the sparkling centrepiece to a bold and richly flavoured concert conducted by the Orchestra’s inspirational Principal Guest Conductor, Andrew Manze.

Mozart wrote his only concerto for clarinet in the space of about ten days, when he was at the height of his powers, and only two months before his tragically early death.  It is a glorious work: the first great concerto for the instrument, and some would say still the greatest, which displays the range and agility of the clarinet as well as its velvety and soulful qualities. Mendelssohn’s Fourth Symphony is extroverted from the outset, conjuring up the sunny skies and landscapes of the Italian countryside in a virtually flawless assembly of airy and fiery dances, never letting the excitement lapse for a moment. Truly Italian, Rossini’s youthful sonata is a joyous and overtly dramatic example of the Italian tradition of instrumental belcanto with its rapid flourishes, whilst Mascagni’s passionate intermezzo never fails to pull at the heart strings.
