Mozart never completed his Great Mass in C minor. But what he managed to write is among his most beautiful and magnificent music. At the first performance, his wife Constanze was one of the sopranos and sang the divinely beautiful aria "Et incarnatus est", an aria that makes time stand still. Kazakh pianist Dina makes a welcome return to our series with four timeless sets of variations. Based on a simple violin theme, Bach’s epic Chaconne was transformed into this brilliant showpiece by Italian composer Feruccio Busoni in 1916. Also creating a dazzling display from simple elements are Mozart’s delightful variations on ‘Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star’. Schubert’s dramatic variations on his ‘Rosamunde’ theme build tension by appearing to rush towards the finale. Dina ends with Brahms’s variations on the famous Caprice by Paganini. With rich invention and startling originality, Clara Schumann referred to them as ‘witches’ variations’.

Mozart wrote his only concerto for clarinet in the space of about ten days, when he was at the height of his powers, and only two months before his tragically early death.  It is a glorious work: the first great concerto for the instrument, and some would say still the greatest, which displays the range and agility of the clarinet as well as its velvety and soulful qualities. Mendelssohn’s Fourth Symphony is extroverted from the outset, conjuring up the sunny skies and landscapes of the Italian countryside in a virtually flawless assembly of airy and fiery dances, never letting the excitement lapse for a moment. Truly Italian, Rossini’s youthful sonata is a joyous and overtly dramatic example of the Italian tradition of instrumental belcanto with its rapid flourishes, whilst Mascagni’s passionate intermezzo never fails to pull at the heart strings.

Formed in 2016 at the Hochschule für Musik in Cologne, Germany, the quartet comprises four musicians who have been friends since their youth: Wonhee Bae and Yuna Ha on violin, Dimitri Murrath on viola, and Ye-Eun Heo on cello.
