Sought-after violinist Will Hagen returns to play Korngold’s Violin Concerto in D Major, the first non-film music he wrote after the defeat of Hitler in World War II. Copenhagen Phil – Love, Death, and Great Voices

Join us for performances featuring talented and passionate musicians from the DMV area. MCYO’s younger ensembles will present hidden gems by Mozart, Chevalier de Saint-George, Tchaikovsky, Gershwin, Romero, and more. The Philharmonic, MCYO's flagship orchestra, performs virtuosic works by Strauss, Sibelius, and Marquez, among others. In collaboration with Site-Specific Dances, the performance culminates in an immersive world premiere of Polina Nazaykinskaya's soul-stirring Fenix. This multidisciplinary work showcases the dramatic landscapes of Sedona, while hoping to impart a sense of great reverence for our precious natural world, its epic scale, and its dynamic geological processes.

Carlos Izcaray leads the orchestra in Ravel’s Alborada del gracioso — A tour de force of orchestral writing, displaying Ravel’s unique blend of impressionistic harmonies, Spanish folk influences, and rhythmic vitality. Then, the ASO welcomes pianist Awadagin Pratt to perform Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3. Awadagin has received acclaim for delivering “forceful, imaginative, and precisely tinted” performances and is hailed as “one of the great and distinctive American pianists and conductors of our time.” The concert concludes with Strauss’ Ein Heldenleben (A Hero’s Life). Inspired by the concept of Liebestod from Wagner's "Tristan and Isolde," Strauss's composition delves into the profound questions of life and the hereafter with stunning harmonies and masterful orchestration.

Known for her grace and emotional range, Chinese pianist Siqian Li tells stories through her virtuosic playing. There are two transcriptions by composers who admired their older masters, with Liszt’s interpretation of Beethoven’s pastoral songs, and Percy Grainger conjuring up the sumptuous sound world of Richard Strauss. Gershwin’s preludes show off his brilliance and variety, from Brazilian and Spanish rhythms to a bluesy lullaby, whilst Russian visionary Alexander Scriabin’s Fantasy depicts moonlight and storms across the sea’s vast expanse. In Liszt’s virtuosic retelling of a Faust legend, the devil takes up the violin, dancing us all into an ecstatic frenzy.

The Alabama Symphony Orchestra is joined by Soprano Mary Wilson! She has been hailed as one of today’s most exciting artists, receiving critical acclaim for a voice that is “lyrical and triumphant, a dazzling array of legato melodies and ornate coloratura” (San Francisco Chronicle).  Opera News heralded her first solo recording, Mary Wilson Sings Handel, stating “Wilson’s luminous voice contains so much charisma,” they dubbed her recording one of their “Best of the Year.”

In Strauss's masterful  Ein Heldenleben, a young hero sets out, full of courage and lyrical exuberance. Out in the world, he meets both enemies and love before he can finally retire, fed up with days. Richard Strauss may have seen himself as the musical hero when he wrote this work – quotations from his own works keep popping up, especially when the hero is portrayed as a peacemaker and benefactor.

Richard Strauss' Vier letzte Lieder is the aging German composer's unearthly beautiful farewell to life. Now the Danish star soprano Henriette Bonde-Hansen sings them for the very first time. The bubbling orchestral music of Wagner is the heart's blood for chief conductor Christoph Gedschold.

Immerse yourself in an unforgettable evening of music at the Walt Disney Concert Hall with the "Gershwin & Strauss" concert, featuring the Los Angeles Philharmonic under the baton of Teddy Abrams. The concert will showcase the extraordinary talents of pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet, who will dazzle the audience with his interpretation of Gershwin's joyful Concerto in F. Thibaudet's relationship with this piece began at the tender age of 14, and over four decades, his performances have deepened in love and jazz-infused interpretations, promising a performance that exudes utter joy and leaves everyone with a smile.

The program also features Strauss' epic "Also sprach Zarathustra, Op. 30," a symphonic poem inspired by Nietzsche and made famous by its use in Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. Beyond the iconic sunrise theme, the piece is a marvelous exploration of nature, science, and the unseen world, led masterfully by Teddy Abrams.

Adding to the weekend's performances, Caroline Shaw's "The Observatory" will be performed on Saturday and Sunday.
