The program also features Strauss' epic "Also sprach Zarathustra, Op. 30," a symphonic poem inspired by Nietzsche and made famous by its use in Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. Adding to the weekend's performances, Caroline Shaw's "The Observatory" will be performed on Saturday and Sunday. Known for her grace and emotional range, Chinese pianist Siqian Li tells stories through her virtuosic playing. There are two transcriptions by composers who admired their older masters, with Liszt’s interpretation of Beethoven’s pastoral songs, and Percy Grainger conjuring up the sumptuous sound world of Richard Strauss. Gershwin’s preludes show off his brilliance and variety, from Brazilian and Spanish rhythms to a bluesy lullaby, whilst Russian visionary Alexander Scriabin’s Fantasy depicts moonlight and storms across the sea’s vast expanse. Copenhagen Phil – Love, Death, and Great Voices

Join us for performances featuring talented and passionate musicians from the DMV area. MCYO’s younger ensembles will present hidden gems by Mozart, Chevalier de Saint-George, Tchaikovsky, Gershwin, Romero, and more. The Philharmonic, MCYO's flagship orchestra, performs virtuosic works by Strauss, Sibelius, and Marquez, among others. In collaboration with Site-Specific Dances, the performance culminates in an immersive world premiere of Polina Nazaykinskaya's soul-stirring Fenix. This multidisciplinary work showcases the dramatic landscapes of Sedona, while hoping to impart a sense of great reverence for our precious natural world, its epic scale, and its dynamic geological processes.
