On the occasion of the James Ensor year, Casco Phil is browsing through the colorful repertoire for woodwind quintet. Ensor himself prided himself on the fact that many contemporaries shared his sensitivity to colors with none other than Claude Debussy, the founder of musical impressionism. The interweaving of sound and color turned out to be a sign of the times: just as Ensor was inspired by shades of color and light, a whole generation of French composers became fascinated by the contrast between light and dark. Milhaud and Taffanel, among others, managed to utilize the wide sound diversity of a woodwind collective. The trend was also picked up on the Flemish side: Frédéric Devreese composed his James Ensor Suite as the ultimate tribute to the Ostend master. From delicate melodies to richly varied textures, be moved by the splendor of this enchanting music in the intimate setting of the Predikherenkerk.

This program mixes winds and piano in a variety of combinations, creating a kaleidoscope of instrumental colors. Sonatas by Saint-Saëns and Poulenc pair the piano with oboe and flute, and Taffanel’s quintet is a lively showcase for the winds. The concert begins with a Rossini wind quartet and concludes with Mozart’s inventive Quintet for Piano and Winds, a trove of extraordinary melodies, about which he said, “I myself consider it to be the best thing that I have written in my life.”

The evening's program features a rich selection of chamber music masterpieces, including Gioachino Rossini's Quartet No. 4 in B-flat major, Camille Saint-Saëns' Sonata for Oboe and Piano, Op. 166, Paul Taffanel's Quintet in G minor, Francis Poulenc's Sonata for Flute and Piano, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Quintet in E-flat major, K. 452. These pieces showcase the vibrant and playful chamber music style, blending elegance with wit and exploring a wide range of emotions and textures.

The performance will feature an array of talented musicians, including pianist Evren Ozel, flutist Demarre McGill, oboist Juri Vallentin, clarinetist Romie de Guise-Langlois, bassoonist Peter Kolkay, and horn player Hugo Valverde. Take time to savor the sound of the winds! The MVCO Woodwind Quintet and Sextet perform the tried-and-true Paul Taffanel's "Quintet in G minor, Samuel Barber's "Summer Music, and Leoš Janáček's "Mladi (Youth). These old friends are worth holding an to!

The famous "Chorale St. Antonii" comes from Haydn's B-flat major Divertimento, which Brahms used as the theme for his "Haydn Variations". The chorale is probably a pilgrimage song that was sung on foot to a St. Anthony's chapel to bring the pilgrims to their destination - "d'un pas léger", with light steps. The wind quintet genre took off in Paris with the enthusiastically received compositions of Anton Reicha, which Franz Danzi emulated in his G minor wind quintet. If France is still considered a stronghold of woodwind sound today, this is also thanks to Paul Taffanel. The "Société des Instruments à Vent", which he founded in 1878, also inspired later composers such as Jacques Ibert to write works for wind quintet. French Baroque composers used the term "Tombeau" to describe funeral pieces for deceased colleagues. Ravel's "Tombeau de Couperin" is more of a musical nod to a bygone era and is much more light-hearted than the title suggests.
