Junior Honors Recital

Dmitri Kabalevsky was one of the politically inconspicuous, yet highly popular Soviet composers, as his first cello concerto exemplifies. Composed between 1948 and 1949, lyrical passages predominate, with flashes of Russian and Middle Eastern folk music. Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5, on the other hand, is a work in which the composer struggles for his artistic and physical survival. After sharp party criticism of his opera "Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk," the new symphony was intended to demonstrate his aesthetic pliability. Shostakovich achieved a brilliant balancing act: He composed an ostensibly "folk" work that, concealed behind artful compositional techniques, did not skimp on critical depictions of reality.

Study viola at SFCM and bring this traditionally mid-range instrument to the vanguard of the performing world. Four faculty members and about 20 students make up SFCM’s viola department. Studio sizes are kept small, ensuring performance opportunities and tailored instruction for each student in the department. Ensembles available to viola players include baroque and early-music ensembles, contemporary groups, and the Conservatory Orchestra.

Masterclass: Jonathan Swensen, cello

Our subscribers voted this summer, and the results are in! I wanted a popular symphonic work to be featured in the second half of these concerts, and Dvořák’s New World Symphony emerged as the winner. The first half of the concert opens with a fun work titled Loco by Jennifer Higdon, followed by the return of another favorite artist of mine, Steven Isserlis who has enjoyed a long and distinguished career as one of the world’s foremost cellists. He will perform Kabalevsky’s second cello concerto, a premiere for the MSO.
