It has an inherent majestic strength: Camille Saint-Saëns' 3rd Symphony, composed in 1886 - one of the first non-sacred organ works for orchestra. With Saint-Saëns' powerful sounds, the Philharmonie Salzburg will first make the Stadtkirche Hallein tremble on this evening, before paying homage to Johann Strauss on his 200th birthday in the second part of the concert, together with the lower school choir of the Musisches Gymnasium Salzburg.

The programme for the last evening in Trieste dances from musical Vienna to the whole world, circling around Italy again and again. Petr Popelka and the Wiener Symphoniker slowly move with Johann Strauss Sohn and his Gruß an Wien to the land Where the Lemons Blossom and finally spend A Night in Venice. Of course, the polka Auf Ferienreisen is also performed. The second part of the programme includes works by Giacomo Puccini (Preludio sinfonico), Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (Capriccio Italien) and the interlude to Franz Schmidt's opera Notre Dame. The programme closes with the Strauss waltz Roses from the South. An atmospheric evening that will also be recorded by ORF and broadcast to the world from Trieste.

Waltzes, polkas, blissful operetta charm, sparkling like the sound of champagne: this is what the Viennese masters from the great Strauss family stand for, as does Franz Lehár. Atmospheric opera moments by contemporary Giacomo Puccini introduce the gala before the imaginary curtain rises to forays into operetta classics such as "The Merry Widow", "Giuditta" and "The Bat". Waltzes and lively polkas then provide the furious finale. The star guest is the Polish soprano Magdalena Lucjan, who studied in Vienna and thus brings the flair of the Danube metropolis directly to the Rhine.

Martha Argerich speaks of Daniil Trifonov with astonishment: “He has everything and more – tenderness, but also a demonic quality. I’ve never heard anything like it.” To round off the year, the star pianist performs Johannes Brahms’ monumentally virtuosic Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Berliner Philharmoniker and Kirill Petrenko. After the interval, the powerful and festive prelude from Richard Wagner’s opera Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg follows. Prize-winning cellist Anthony Ross will leave his home as principal cellist of the Minnesota Orchestra to perform his compelling interpretation of Edward Elgar’s Cello Concerto on the stage of Whiting Auditorium. A favorite among cellists, the piece rose to wide acclaim nearly 40 years after it premiered, when celebrity cellist Jacqueline du Pré released a recording in the 1960s. FSO will bookend the concerto with iconic pieces by Johann Strauss, Jr. and Richard Strauss. Strauss Jr.’s The Blue Danube is so well loved, in fact, that Austria adopted it as a second national anthem. The work by Richard Strauss has also been adopted as an anthem of sorts by sci-fi fanatics everywhere.
