Ladies, stand at attention; gentlemen, be on your guard: Count Ory is coming! The tireless seducer, master of disguise, and hopeless romantic sets out on a mission with a single goal — to enchant yet another unsuspecting heart. Expect a charming comedy about a man willing to do anything (and disguise himself as anyone) to win the favor of his next beloved, this time the graceful Countess Adèle.

“You’re so lucky: the cheese fell right on the macaroni!”
Figaro
Figaro is not only the barber, but also the life coach, matchmaker, and information center of Seville. At least, that's how he introduces himself, but what we experience in Rossini's opera casts doubt on this self-characterization: His strategies for the enamored Count Almaviva to establish contact with Rosina, jealously guarded by her guardian, fail from the outset—and when Figaro intervenes, things only get worse. A good premise for a turbulent comedy, which director Nicola Hümpel magnifies with two live cameras: The production presents us with a group of egotists trying to manipulate one another. Eager to always present themselves in the best possible light, they compete for the best positions in front of the cameras, which mercilessly magnify every errant facial expression and every hidden tension.

Emanuel Blumin-Sint is a rising star in the classical music world. The 20-year-old bassoonist has already given solo performances at New York's Carnegie Hall and the Elbphilharmonie. He has collaborated with Sir Simon Rattle and won more than a dozen first prizes in competitions. In 2024, he was awarded the Fanny Mendelssohn Förderpreis, which enabled him to create his debut album, "Leading Bassoon." This record clearly shows that Emanuel Blumin-Sint is on a mission. He wants to bring the bassoon to create a new image, bringing the sonic diversity offered by his instrument closer to the audience. In this "Classics on Sunday – Extra," he plays three of his most beautiful declarations of love for his instrument. Mozart's Bassoon Concerto is a poetic reverie tailor-made for the warm, singing tone of the bassoon. And Rossini beautifully combines the bassoon's soft tone with lightness and Italian flair.

Love, betrayal and revenge – the most popular subjects in operatic history also drive Rossini's Semiramide. The opera seria premiered in 1823 at the Teatro La Fenice. Its overture, remarkably long for Rossini, is built on musical themes from the opera. Through sharp contrasts it creates a dramatic portrayal that builds to exhilarating climaxes such as a thunderclap. To the bassoon – an often underestimated instrument – Carl Maria von Weber dedicated a masterful concerto that showcases the instrument's virtuosic possibilities. Weber composed the concerto in 1811 in Munich and dedicated it to the bassoonist Georg Friedrich Brandt, who made it known through performances at the Munich Court Theatre and in Prague. Today it is among the most popular and most frequently performed bassoon concertos. Together with the Italian-Turkish conductor Nil Venditti, Rie Koyama, principal bassoonist of the Bamberg Symphony, lets the warm, cantabile sound of the instrument shine. Stormy and dance-like, Beethoven's Seventh Symphony celebrates the approaching liberation from Napoleon. It premiered in 1813 together with Wellington's Victory, which, with drumrolls, celebrates the Battle of Vitoria and Britain's triumph over France. With this concert Beethoven achieved his greatest success to that point. Not least, its political message hit exactly the taste of the Viennese public, which looked optimistically toward the end of Napoleon's dominance in Europe. Yet the Seventh Symphony later became detached from Wellington's victory and its political background. Rhythm and incisiveness define its music, which Richard Wagner described as an intoxicating "apotheosis of the dance."

Chic fashion, great cars, fine food, and excellent wine are what many people immediately associate with the Italian way of life. But Bella Italia naturally has much more to offer, especially when it comes to music: "Italia, Terra di Musica!" - Italy, the land of music! Opera and bel canto are among its trademarks – the "beautiful singing" with which the opera's heroes and heroines express their great emotions. Bel canto highlights – from voluptuous cantabile to igniting bravura arias – are presented by the young British bass-baritone William Thomas, who has already made a name for himself through performances in Milan and London, Vienna, and Paris. Richard Strauss made "Bella Italia" a declaration of love with his composed recollections of his trip to Italy in 1886. The piece is titled "From Italy ," and takes us through the Campagna to Naples.

A magical opera with jaw-dropping singing, considered a crown jewel of bel canto opera, Rossini's glittery version of the fairytale classic lets our heroine drive her own fate—no fairy godmother needed. It's not just beauty that wins the prince's heart (though she does get a stunning gown); instead, love and kindness triumph over greed and vanity. Rossini's signature mix of vocal virtuosity, lyrical beauty, and zany hijinks brings this sweet tale to life.

Exactly 200 years ago, Rossini dared to celebrate the coronation of Charles X with this ebullient satire of class, manners, and the timeless misery of long-distance travel. In his long-awaited American debut, Olivier Award-winning director Damiano Michieletto transforms this showpiece into a theatrical work of art, setting the story in a present-day gallery on the cusp of opening a major exhibition. The production’s rich narrative and visual palette shade Rossini’s joyful musical canvas, blurring the line between life and art.

The witty story development and enjoyable, lyrical vocal performances make this opera Rossini's most popular work. The exhilarating love story unfolds with the action of Figaro eventually making the match between the sheltered Rosina and Il Conte d'Almaviva. The spectacular music includes the famous opening overture that bursts into a Rossini Crescendo, Figaro's "Largo al factotum" ("Make way for the handyman"), in which the barber goes on about his pride, and Rosina's cavatina about love, "Una voce poco fa" ("A voice a while back"), famous for coloraturas. The production by Josef E. If you’ve heard of Figaro, chances are you’ve heard of him a number of times in a row (Figaro...Figaro...Figaro...Fiiiiiiiiiiiigaro!!!). Figaro is something of a fixer, and not just of hair. In this adventure, the industrious barber works to unite two young lovers, Count Almaviva and Rosina, but to do so, he must also thwart Dr. Bartolo’s plan to make Rosina his bride, thereby pocketing her considerable dowry.

Arguably the most buffa opera of all opera buffas, The Barber of Seville is a joyful, high energy romp that delights the eyes and ears while offering a much-needed counterbalance to the deep, dark doldrums of a Vancouver midwinter.

In a colourful reimagining by the dynamic Canadian creative duo of director Morris Panych and designer Ken MacDonald, Barber’s fast-paced plot is kept aloft by the unrivalled comedic chemistry between Cesare Sterbini’s libretto and Rossini’s energetic, endlessly inventive melodies, steered here by Maestro Leslie Dala.

Admittedly, opera can lean a bit towards the tragic, so it may surprise some that in a story full of trickery, scheming, and lovers separated by a despicable villain…everything ends well! Save that pit in your stomach for another day and enjoy a sparkling, laugh-out-loud comedy ride packed with irresistible melodies, scissor-sharp scheming, and Rossini’s most famous tunes.

Opera in two acts. A musical comedy full of tangles, romance and scheming plots, with a burlesque twist and direction by Vidar Magnussen. Sung in Norwegian, with subtitles in Norwegian and English.

Grieghallen

We meet the charming barber Figaro, who with quick lines and even quicker solutions helps the young Count Almaviva win the heart of the beautiful Rosina. The pace is fast, the melodies are immortal, and laughter is unbridled as disguises, misunderstandings and secret deals become entangled.

This is opera at its most playful - elegant, energetic and irresistibly entertaining. The opera has been an audience favorite since its premiere in the early 19th century, and now gets a whole new twist as comedian, actor, TV personality and director Vidar Magnussen brings the story into his burlesque and not least humorous world. The audience is served poetic slapstick inspired by, amongst others, silent film hero Buster Keaton. This 2027 production will however be faithful to the original storyline The opera is sung in Norwegian, and we can promise that this will be both beautiful and funny.

Rossini's music is bel canto (beautiful singing) at its finest – with long, well-formed vocal lines, captivating arias, ensembles with flair and a refined, lyrical orchestration. The Barber of Seville is the most famous of the composer genius Rossini's many operas.

The 81st Season comes to a jubilant close with the return of The Barber of Seville, Gioachino Rossini’s riotously funny comic masterpiece, at Bass Performance Hall. A Fort Worth favorite that last had audiences rolling in the aisles in 2016, Barber returns in a vibrant new production bursting with quicksilver wit, buoyant physical comedy, and some of the most instantly recognizable music ever written for the stage.

Since its premiere, Rossini’s Barber of Seville has become one of the most frequently performed operas in the world—and it’s clear from the opening notes of the overture. Drawing inspiration from Pierre Beaumarchais’ razor-sharp comedy, Cesare Sterbini’s sparkling libretto and Rossini’s effervescent score deliver nonstop comic invention: disguises pile up, plans unravel, and laughter comes fast and often. As the Minnesota Star Tribune raved, it’s “a delirious joy…a burst of sumptuous music [and] gales of laughter.”
