Chic fashion, great cars, fine food, and excellent wine are what many people immediately associate with the Italian way of life. But Bella Italia naturally has much more to offer, especially when it comes to music: "Italia, Terra di Musica!" - Italy, the land of music! Opera and bel canto are among its trademarks – the "beautiful singing" with which the opera's heroes and heroines express their great emotions. Bel canto highlights – from voluptuous cantabile to igniting bravura arias – are presented by the young British bass-baritone William Thomas, who has already made a name for himself through performances in Milan and London, Vienna, and Paris. Richard Strauss made "Bella Italia" a declaration of love with his composed recollections of his trip to Italy in 1886. The piece is titled "From Italy ," and takes us through the Campagna to Naples.

“From Bohemia to the end of the world” – that's how one could articulate the successful artistic career of tenor Petr Nekoranec, who made his debut in South Africa in August 2024 while in March 2025 he will travel to Brisbane, Australia to make his debut in the Queensland opera house as Don Ramiro in Rossini’s La cenerentola. Petr was born in Nové Dvory by the City of Polná, studied singing in Pardubice, Munich, and New York, performed in Berlin, Munich, Stuttgart, Bayreuth, Florence, Teatro Real in Madrid, Warsaw, São Paulo, Brazil, etc. He is also a popular guest of French opera houses such as the Théâtre du Capitole v Toulouse a Opéra national de Lorraine v Nancy. In July 2024 he made his debut at the famous festival in Aix-en-Provence. He is a soloist at the National Theatre Opera, where he added his first ever Rodolfo in Puccini's La bohème in the 2024/25 season to the roaster of his many beautiful roles.

Moldovan baritone Andrey Zhilikhovsky stars as Figaro, the ingenious barber of Seville, with Hungarian bass-8 baritone Peter Kálmán as Dr. Bartolo and Russian bass Alexander Vinogradov as Don Basilio rounding out the principal cast. Giacomo Sagripanti conducts Bartlett Sher’s madcap production.

The witty story development and enjoyable, lyrical vocal performances make this opera Rossini's most popular work. The exhilarating love story unfolds with the action of Figaro eventually making the match between the sheltered Rosina and Il Conte d'Almaviva. The spectacular music includes the famous opening overture that bursts into a Rossini Crescendo, Figaro's "Largo al factotum" ("Make way for the handyman"), in which the barber goes on about his pride, and Rosina's cavatina about love, "Una voce poco fa" ("A voice a while back"), famous for coloraturas. The production by Josef E. Köpplinger is set in Francoist Spain in the late 1960s.The comedy unfolds based on the delicate balance of power and vice, with the pop, kitsch mood of the 1960s expressed through colourful art.

Known to her adoring fans as the “Valkyrie of the piano,” Venezuelan pianist, composer, and opera star Teresa Carreño (1853-1917) stunned audiences on both sides of the Atlantic. Like Cuban violinist-composer José White, Carreño received support from American composer Louis Gottschalk in New York City, and concertized widely in Europe, before returning to America, and then to Venezuela, where she attempted to found a conservatory and opera company. This program weaves together the rich tapestry of Carreño’s life and influence, featuring her works alongside those of her teachers, friends, and students, and even a husband.

Abigail, a Bachelor of Music student under the guidance of Pamela Hinchman, will be accompanied by Timothy Zhang on the English horn and Jason Carlson on the piano.

The recital will feature a carefully selected repertoire that showcases Abigail's versatile vocal range and expressive capabilities. The program includes:

Emanuel Blumin-Sint is a rising star in the classical music world. The 20-year-old bassoonist has already given solo performances at New York's Carnegie Hall and the Elbphilharmonie. He has collaborated with Sir Simon Rattle and won more than a dozen first prizes in competitions. In 2024, he was awarded the Fanny Mendelssohn Förderpreis, which enabled him to create his debut album, "Leading Bassoon." This record clearly shows that Emanuel Blumin-Sint is on a mission. He wants to bring the bassoon to create a new image, bringing the sonic diversity offered by his instrument closer to the audience. In this "Classics on Sunday – Extra," he plays three of his most beautiful declarations of love for his instrument. Mozart's Bassoon Concerto is a poetic reverie tailor-made for the warm, singing tone of the bassoon. And Rossini beautifully combines the bassoon's soft tone with lightness and Italian flair.

Figaro is not only the barber, but also the life coach, matchmaker, and information center of Seville. At least, that's how he introduces himself, but what we experience in Rossini's opera casts doubt on this self-characterization: His strategies for the enamored Count Almaviva to establish contact with Rosina, jealously guarded by her guardian, fail from the outset—and when Figaro intervenes, things only get worse. A good premise for a turbulent comedy, which director Nicola Hümpel magnifies with two live cameras: The production presents us with a group of egotists trying to manipulate one another. Eager to always present themselves in the best possible light, they compete for the best positions in front of the cameras, which mercilessly magnify every errant facial expression and every hidden tension.
