The fabric of the opera could hardly be more gloomy: a gypsy who wishes to avenge the death of her mother at the stake, a count who wishes to use the execution of this gypsy to strike at his rival; a horrifying truth that is revealed at the moment of death. All the ingredients of Verdi's dramatic abundance appear here: mysterious sound worlds, harsh contrasts, vocal brilliance, opulent tableaux. The story centers on Violetta Valéry, a celebrated courtesan who discovers true love in the arms of Alfredo Germont. However, social pressures and Alfredo’s disapproving father compel her to renounce their love for the sake of his family’s reputation. Overcome by heartbreak and illness, Violetta ultimately finds her way back to Alfredo, but their reconciliation comes too late—she dies in his arms, underscoring the opera’s powerful themes of love, sacrifice, and societal judgment.

Written in memory of a friend, this sacred work carries the expressive weight of Verdi’s dramas — at once intimate and monumental. It isn’t a spectacle, but a deep exploration of human emotion: mourning, questioning, hope.

Three men vie for the love of Elvira: her lover Ernani, Don Carlo, the King of Spain, and Silva, Elvira's wealthy guardian to whom she is betrothed. When Carlo is to be elected as Emperor in Aachen, Silva and Ernani are also among the conspirators. However, the assassination attempt fails, Carlo is elected Emperor Charles V, and wants to punish the conspirators. At Elvira's request, however, he pardons both and ultimately accepts the love between her and Ernani. But the happy ending does not last long, as Silva seeks revenge on Ernani... With ERNANI, Verdi created a gripping drama of power, love, and jealousy based on Victor Hugo's model, using a historical event as the occasion: the coronation of Charles V as Emperor in Aachen Cathedral in 1520. For Verdi, the shocking impact of the plot took precedence over its dramaturgical credibility. The world premiere of ERNANI on 9 March 1844 at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice was an immediate triumph for Verdi. After the successes of NABUCCO and I LOMBARDI, this was to be Verdi's definitive breakthrough as a composer. The work quickly spread across Italian stages and was soon performed in London, Paris and Berlin. In the 19th century, ERNANI was one of the most frequently performed operas by Giuseppe Verdi. While the work is still largely bound to convention in its formal structure, the music possesses a previously unheard dramatic force - with choruses that already foreshadow IL TROVATORE, with finely crafted ensembles, with arias full of exceptional cantabile quality, and with gripping, dramatic finales. The conspirators’ chorus from Act III, incidentally, became - even more than “Va pensiero” - the leitmotif of the Italian “Risorgimento”, the national unification movement of Italy. This early work of Verdi, rarely performed today, is now experiencing a concert performance in Cologne under the baton of Giuliano Carella.

Our season concludes with Verdi’s tragic love story, La Traviata. The scandalous love affair between the courtesan Violetta Valery and the young gentleman Alfredo Germont threatens to tear the fabric of the Parisian social order apart. Set during the construction of the Eiffel Tower, this glittering production brings us into the heart of French society and makes us a bystander to one of the greatest and saddest love stories of all time. Mikayla Sager, most recently seen as one of our Mimìs in La Bohème, returns as the lovestruck courtesan with Former Artist-in-Residence WooYoung Yoon as her young lover. Former Conductor in Residence Johannes Löhner returns to make his principal conducting debut for Opera San José with inaugural Director-in-Residence Tara Branham returning to direct.

Triggered by a curious encounter, which he thinks is a prophesy, Macbeth’s wife goads him into murdering King Duncan. The throne falls to him, but remorse and hallucinations throw him deeper and deeper into turmoil, while Lady Macbeth urges him to carry out more atrocious deeds. But her feelings of guilt ending up destroying her too. R.B. Schlather’s production traces the extraordinary actuality of the protagonists, just as Verdi was fascinated by Shakespeare’s King and Queen. The Director studied the gruesome events surrounding a childless couple in an elegant but cheerless atmosphere of an imposing residence: global politics mirrored in private lives. In the end the oppressed put a violent end to the Macbeth’s autocratic regime.

Touched by his sincerity and love, Violetta abandons her glamorous lifestyle and retreats to the countryside with him. Their happiness is short-lived, however, when Alfredo’s father, Giorgio Germont, secretly visits Violetta and urges her to end the relationship to preserve the family’s honor and secure his daughter’s future. Heartbroken, Violetta sacrifices her own happiness and leaves Alfredo without explaining the true reason.

Verdi's last work, in the popular tradition, is a lighthearted comedy about a fat drunkard who cynically seduces two women and is severely punished by them. However, when one carefully examines the Shakespearean original and carefully analyzes the extraordinary richness of the musical motifs, one discovers a darker undercurrent to this mysterious work, which the aged, accomplished composer consciously wrote as a farewell to his immense legacy, his own impressive life, and the world he philosophically viewed as the creator's painful joke on people and their actions. Reaching this undercurrent and revealing its supreme artistic beauty seems worth departing from the stereotype of a protagonist supposedly engaged solely in enjoying the remnants of the pleasures of table and bed, and in fairground clowning.

Sophie Rashbrook is a writer, librettist and opera dramaturg. Formerly the Nicholas John Dramaturg at Welsh National Opera, she holds an MPhil in Russian Studies from Cambridge University, an MA in Opera-Making from the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, and spent a year playing the cello at the St Petersburg Conservatoire.

In honeyed tones, Lord and Lady Macbeth reveal their passionate and bizarre emotions to us. But behind this beauty there lurks an abyss, which Verdi unveils with one of the cruelest dramas in the history of world literature. In their struggle to seize power and retain it once it has been usurped, Macbeth and his lady commit one murder after another. The unwavering nature of their desire imbues their love with a radicality that would have been unthinkable on the operatic stage before this work. “The subject matter of this opera is neither political nor religious: it is fantastic,” wrote Verdi and brought Shakespeare’s play closer to a more “romantic” reading. In actual fact, the witches, ghosts and apparitions, the eerie elements, which dominate the musical and dramatic flow, in short the whole world of this opera can be regarded as an outward image of its protagonists’ inner state.

La Traviata is set in the world of Parisian high society. This popular opera tells the story of the courtesan, Violetta Valéry: her loves and her sad fate. It is based on the dramatic adaptation of the romantic novel, "La Dame aux Camélias" by Alexandre Dumas fils, modeled by the author on the high-class mistress, Marie Duplessis. Giuseppe Verdi then took the story, making its heroine a contemporary woman, and writing an innovative opera in which he raised the role of the music itself to that of expressing the story's emotions. Starting with "Libiamo ne' lieti calici", which has become a well-known, staple tune of gala concerts, the work features numerous other famous songs, such as Violetta's most technically demanding aria, "Ah, fors'è lui-sempre libera", in the prelude foretelling tragedy, and Germont's "Di Provenza il mar, il suol".

Considered too realistic at its premiere in 1853, La Traviata remains one of the essential operas in the lyric repertoire. At the end of the first act, Violetta proclaims sempre libera (always free): is this a feminist plea ahead of its time or a tragic illusion? From the ballroom to the confines of the sanatorium, Verdi infuses his masterpiece with ardent music, sometimes breathless, but constantly seeking to free itself from conventions to achieve authentic beauty. Silvia Paoli, one of the great directors of our time, dares a powerful and virtuoso dramaturgical gesture, in total osmosis with the direction of Roderick Cox who brings this iconic score to incandescence, ideally served by the solar soprano of Ruzan Mantashyan and the very remarkable tenor Omer Kobiljak.

The Philharmonia and Barts Choir join forces for an iconic piece in the classical canon: Verdi’s epic Requiem.

Verdi poured all his expertise in depicting human emotion into this choral masterpiece. There is violence in the ‘Dies Irae’ movement, and grandeur in the ‘Tuba Mirum’, heralded by eight trumpets. Joyful praise resounds in the ‘Sanctus’, and the ‘Agnus Dei’ opens with a spine-tingling unaccompanied duet for the soprano and mezzo soloists.

Known for its spectacle, rousing marches, and sumptuously orchestrated score, this collaboration between Anchorage Opera and the Anchorage Symphony Orchestra is a thrilling night of music drama. 

ROCO joins the global celebration of the 2025 World EXPO in Osaka with Beyond the Rising Sun – A Musical Voyage, a cross-cultural evening honoring innovation, tradition, and international exchange. Hosted at Asia Society Texas Center, this concert features ROCO musicians Kana Kimura (violin), Maiko Sasaki (clarinet), Shino Hayashi (cello), and guest pianist Kana Mimaki in a program that bridges East and West.

The centerpiece is a new ROCO-commissioned quartet by Hiroaki Tokunaga, inspired by the reflections of Japanese astronaut Koichi Wakata, who will join the ensemble as a guest speaker at the event. Paired with a Japanese fashion collection curated by Houston City College and a Suntory Toki whisky tasting, the evening promises a vibrant tapestry of sound, visual art, and Japanese culture.

This pulse-pounding program kicks off with a flurry of iconic marches that span stadiums, screen, and ceremony. From Sousa’s Washington Post March to the unmistakable energy of Roundball Rock (the theme to NBA on NBC), the first half delivers big brass, booming percussion, and instantly recognizable anthems. Audiences will cheer for local favorites like the University of Michigan and Michigan State University fight songs, get swept up in the thrill of John Williams’ Imperial March, and soar with one of his Olympic masterpieces. The Requiem of 1874 is the only large-scale work that Verdi didn’t compose for the stage but this dramatic choral classic wouldn’t sound out of place at La Scala; indeed, the conductor Hans von Bülow memorably described it as ‘Verdi’s latest opera, in church vestments.’ Whatever its credentials as a devotional work, there’s no denying its sheer emotional power which deals in extremes of scale, from the outright terror of the Dies Irae – all doom-thundering bass drum and fire-spitting trumpets – to the intimacy of a pleading, unaccompanied duet in the Agnus Dei. Verdi gives his enormous chorus plenty of chance to shine, too, as in the scurrying virtuosity of the double-fugue Sanctus. Given its capacity for shock and awe, it’s not surprising that the Requiem has supercharged the soundtracks for countless movies, Including Django Unchained and Mad Max: Fury Road. Simon Boccanegra was written in the 1850s, a period when Giuseppe Verdi, inspired by his growing fame, was challenging operatic tradition. It is a dark work, dominated by low voices, with a baritone as the protagonist, and no supporting female roles. The world premiere in 1857 was not well-received; towards the end of his life, Arrigo Boito and the composer made far-reaching changes to the work, and only this 1881 version achieved success on opera stages.

This adaptation of Rigoletto is designed for children aged 3 to 6, and transforms Verdi’s opera into a large theatrical game. The world of Mantua becomes a colorful board game where the characters move like pieces, and the audience is invited to participate actively: singing, playing, and discovering. Gilda is the protagonist of this adventure: no longer just a romantic figure, but a girl who learns to make her own choices and follow her own path. With lightness and imagination, children are guided on a journey where even play becomes an opportunity to understand more about themselves, others, and the world.

The story comes full circle, ending with another tragic execution, in this sprawling medieval melodrama.

Only one may hold a mirror to him, is even obliged to criticise the ruler – the jester. In his play Le Roi s’amuse (The King Amuses Himself), the French dramatist Victor Hugo went through this starting position with an unscrupulous fun-lover as the king, and a fool whose spiritual deformation has manifested itself in a hunchback.
