The Philharmonic State Orchestra, from whose ranks the ensembles for six chamber concerts are formed until the summer, spends most of its time in the pit: at the interface between the singing on stage and the music from below. The fact that text and instrumental sound usually go together extraordinarily well is therefore in the orchestra's blood. For an entire season, the interaction of text and music will also be examined in an intimate chamber music setting. How fitting that many members of the State Opera ensemble could be won over for the series. The Hamburg chamber singer Gabriele Rossmanith will be the first to perform.

But the tyrant Macbeth and his wife are plagued by pangs of conscience. They’re both psychologically shattered - in different ways. In the end, the oppressed populace rebel, putting an end to an unjust regime.

In a domestic setting surrounding this childless, murderous couple, mechanisms of violent rule become apparent that can be found on a larger scale: World politics are reflected in a private sphere. From this perspective the story of a medieval Scottish despot seems frighteningly relevant today.

Already dying from an incurable lung disease, she falls in love with Alfredo Germont. Yet her feelings are in conflict with her way of life and all sense of reason; ultimately, her quest for freedom and happiness is defeated by the moral strictures of bourgeois society. When first performed in Venice in 1853, this story was considered scandalous: an opera about a courtesan who dies of tuberculosis and is also modelled on a real-life woman in Parisian society was an outrageous inno-vation for the time. Focusing on the complex relationship between Violetta, her lover Alfredo and his father Giorgio, Giuseppe Verdi created a captivating and fully-rounded character, expressed through music that shifts between lyrical bel canto passages and powerful musico-dramatic outbursts. MACBETH was the first of Shakespeare’s plays to be set to music by Verdi, in 1847. Despite his decades of interest in the English playwright, he did not adapt another work of Shakespeare’s until late in his career. Verdi’s operatic rendition of this tale of murky prophecies and bloody struggles for the throne of Scotland came in the hugely productive decade that Verdi himself came to refer to as his »galley slave years«. Still striving for critical recognition, he turned out a string of operas that expanded on the bel canto genre. MACBETH was part of an evolution in Italian opera, a development that was even more evident in the modified version released in 1865. In typical fashion Verdi roughened up the storyline and injected some emotional twists and turns, intensifying the drama in the process and creating a tense momentum that sends the protagonists hurtling towards their respective gruesome ends.

"Luisa Miller" is Giuseppe Verdi’s third setting of a play by Friedrich Schiller. “It is a great drama, full of passion and very effective in theatrical terms,” the composer wrote to the librettist Salvadore Cammarano about Kabale und Liebe. In order to conform to the expectations of the censors and audience, Verdi first had to reduce the play to a libretto suitable for opera, moving the focus from Schiller’s political tale to the family drama. In his opera, first performed in Naples in 1849, Verdi produced outstanding character studies of all his protagonists. In this work he laid the foundation for many “Verdi types” of later years, e.g. Iago, Giorgio Germont, Aida or Desdemona. Luisa Miller was first performed in Hamburg at the Hamburg State Opera in 1981 in a new production conducted by Giuseppe Sinopoli and directed by Luciano Damiani, who also designed the sets and costumes at the time.

Although the elderly master had not tried his hand at comedy since the ugly failure of Un giorno di regno in 1840, fifty years later the dry spell ended: Sir John Falstaff, the fat and rakish knight invented by the composer's favourite author, Shakespeare, would become his second comic opera, as well as his final – and perhaps most brilliant – work. Opening this concert is the thrilling Overture to Verdi's La Forza del Destino, dramatically contrasting the constrictive-ness of Fate with the expansiveness of Love. One of the best-known and most beloved concert works, Dvořák's Symphony No. 9 ("From the New World") reflects the composer's visit to the American heartland, his love of American literature, and a profound reverence for Black spirituals. Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring, which some consider to be the single most influential composition to be written in the entire 20th century, "changed everything," as Mr. Zander puts it. Its power to amaze, shock, and thrill has never waned.

In recent years, even decades, it has become a common practice to completely or partially stage certain oratorical works. After Messiah and Matthäus-Passion, nothing could be more suitable to continue the practice than Giuseppe Verdi's Requiem, which is claimed by many, half-seriously, but certainly aptly, to be their "favourite opera". Even though it is a funeral mass, which traditionally does not require a stage – in fact, it specifically keeps it away from itself – its drama, emotionality, and the extremity of mood nuances almost naturally demand a spectacle. It must not be forgotten that in Verdi's these works were not composed for today’s neutral concert halls, church works were placed in sacred spaces, where they could interact with the environment. Even in a traditional concert form, a performance at an opera house gives the work a new visual appearance, but if the performance creates the possibility of a more organic theatrical experience, it can also become more capable of articulating the main message of a very human fear of death more tangibly according to the director's interpretation. The performance with special visuals is created by Ádám Tulassay and his creative team.

To start our Classics Series, Music Director Nicholas Hersh and the MSO will guide us through the four seasons. The evening will start with Mendelssohn’s romantic Overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Ortiz’s La Calaca which features driving rhythms and stirring melodies inspired by the traditions of Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) that celebrate the afterlife in Mexican culture. Finally, we’ll dive deeper into each season with a “mixtape” from Hersh featuring one movement each from Vivaldi, Richter, Ysaÿe, and Piazzolla to create an exploration not only of the seasons, but of each of their cultures.

Together, they will treat us to some of their favourite songs, from composers such as Dowland, Purcell and Schubert. At the heart of the programme is Mahler’s Rückert-Lieder, five songs based on poems by Friedrich Rückert, including the haunting ‘At midnight’ and the beautiful song of farewell, ‘I am lost to the world’, whose closing lines are ‘I live alone in my heaven, in my love, in my song’.

Violetta Valery, living in kept splendour at the expense of Baron Douphol, has apparently recovered from a serious illness. To celebrate, she throws a party where she meets and falls for Alfredo Germont. As their love for each other is frowned upon, they set up house outside of Paris. Alfredo’s father insists that she break with his son in order not to jeopardise the marriage prospects of Alfredo’s sister. Violetta accedes to his wish and cuts off relations. In a showdown at another party Violetta tries to convince Alfredo that she’s in love with the Baron, causing Alfredo to hurl his gambling winnings at her feet, calling them “fees for services rendered”. Soon afterwards, at the height of the Paris carnival, Violetta is on her deathbed. She receives Alfredo, who has heard from his father her real reason for leaving him. Violetta forgives him, gives him her blessing and dies.

The opera that launched Verdi's career, Nabucco is a sweeping saga featuring some of the most passionate music ever written. Never before performed at the COC, this is opera at its most spectacular: a rousing epic of the search for hope amid brutal cruelty and oppression, with a cast of over 120 performers.

Verdi’s heartbreaking masterpiece returns, with reigning Verdi baritone Quinn Kelsey reprising his devastating portrayal of the hunchbacked court jester. Radiant soprano Nadine Sierra is his naïve daughter, Gilda, and tenor Stephen Costello is the rakish Duke of Mantua, with Maestro Pier Giorgio Morandi on the podium to conduct Bartlett Sher’s Weimar-inspired production. A second run of performances features the Met debut of rising tenor Pene Pati, alongside soprano Erin Morley and baritone Luca Salsi, conducted by Maurizio Benini.

Showcasing the excellence of female brass players and musicians from marginalized groups, Seraph Brass celebrates its tenth anniversary in Miami. Winners of the American Prize in Chamber Music, the group has been praised for their “beautiful sounds" (American Record Guide), "fine playing” (Gramophone), and “staggeringly high caliber of performance” (Textura). 

Seraph Brass performs a diverse body of repertoire, ranging from original transcriptions to newly commissioned works and core classics. The program features works by women (Rene Orth, Reena Esmail, Catherine McMichael), American (Anthony DiLorenzo, Kevin Day, Jeff Scott, Kevin McKee), and European (Edvard Grieg, Giuseppe Verdi, Liszt, Franz Dinicu) composers.

Recreating reality is all well and good, according to Giuseppe Verdi, "but inventing reality is better, far better". And what sort of reality he invented in his Troubadour opera: Swapped children, avenged mothers, sacrificed lovers and more... An almost mythical tale full of unbelievable twists and turns that repeatedly put all the characters right into a state of emergency. Verdi was far more concerned with the credibility of the emotions and not so much with the credibility of the plot itself: Singing as a kind of utopia, as the opening of a space that does not exist in recreated reality. In his staging of Verdi's opera, director Paul-Georg Dittrich goes in search of exactly these moments.

This quartet of dances demonstrates a wide variety of repertory. Making its debut with the Company is a work from choreographer Lar Lubovitch, set to Brahms piano compositions, commissioned by New York City Center and created in 2021 on two of NYCB’s principal dancers. Representing tradition are works from the founding choreographers: Balanchine’s evocative Divertimento from ‘Le Baiser de la Fée,’ which never fails to wrap audiences in its air of mystery, while Robbins’ The Four Seasons moves through the cycles of the title, illuminating each with contrasting classical dances.

Crude as a gut punch, tender as a kiss, Verdi’s Requiem translates the ancient Latin mass for the dead into the vivid and visceral idiom of Italian opera, bringing divine scripture to the streets, and vice versa. The conductor Hans von Bülow dismissed the Requiem as Verdi’s “latest opera, in ecclesiastical vestments,” but his friend Johannes Brahms disagreed: “Only a genius could have written such a work.

Join Lyric Opera of Chicago for Giuseppe Verdi’s masterpiece Rigoletto, a powerfully dramatic work based on a play by Victor Hugo. The composer brings astounding intensity to the court jester Rigoletto, tragically obsessed with avenging his daughter Gilda’s dishonor. The score’s highlights are unforgettable, from Rigoletto’s hair-raising denunciation of the Duke of Mantua’s courtiers, “Cortigiani,” to the immoral, philandering Duke’s “La donna è mobile,” to Gilda’s ecstatic “Caro nome.” Conducted by Music Director Enrique Mazzola, a much-acclaimed Verdian, Lyric’s visually sumptuous production stars the sensational baritone Igor Golovatenko. He's joined by two other international luminaries making eagerly awaited company debuts: Mané Galoyan, the exquisite Armenian soprano, and Javier Camarena, the spectacular Mexican tenor.

Music transcends today's actual boundaries, echoes the natural, musical boundaries of yesteryear, and above all shows how much music is the connecting factor between different cultural regions. Casco Phil takes you on a journey that began hundreds of years ago and introduces you to folk music from Hungary, stirring Klezmer from Romania, festive French music at the Court of Louis XIV, and much more. You will hear beautiful music from all corners of Europe as we take you on a complete 'tour musicale', from Western Europe to Central Europe and Northern Europe, and then via Eastern Europe to Southern Europe. The program takes a journey through Europe, taking as its starting point the current members of the European Union. At the same time we also take a journey in time. Music from the 16th century is discussed (by the Mechelen Philippus De Monte), but also baroque music, music from classicism and romanticism, a significant portion of folk music arranged for orchestra, and of course also a touch of accessible modern music. In this way, cultural regions are musically highlighted through the different epochs that have molded Europe into what it is today.

Written in memory of the Italian writer Alessandro Manzoni, this choral prayer tells the story of Judgement Day through dramatic choruses and exquisite solos. With its operatic directness and intensity, it is no wonder that the composer Johannes Brahms declared this the creation of ‘a genius’.

Immerse yourself in the profound beauty of Verdi's Requiem at the Edinburgh International Festival, a performance that promises to be a highlight of the cultural calendar. Under the baton of Principal Conductor Santtu-Matias Rouvali, this event will take place at the prestigious Usher Hall in Edinburgh on Saturday, 24 August 2024, at 8pm.

Verdi's Requiem, a cornerstone of 19th-century music, is renowned for its intense emotional depth and dramatic scope. Santtu-Matias Rouvali, leading the Philharmonia, along with the Edinburgh Festival Chorus and soon-to-be-announced soloists, will explore the full range of human emotion encapsulated in this choral masterpiece.
