In 2020, the National Opera in Warsaw celebrated the 55th anniversary of the reconstruction of its historic home on Teatralny Square. The ambitious project of raising the theatre from ruins was completed 20 years after the war, with the grand opening of the modernized Grand Theatre on November 19, 1965. Shortly thereafter, the Warsaw Opera ensemble, including its distinguished choir, moved in from its temporary home on Nowogrodzka Street.

Violetta Valery, living in kept splendour at the expense of Baron Douphol, has apparently recovered from a serious illness. To celebrate, she throws a party where she meets and falls for Alfredo Germont. As their love for each other is frowned upon, they set up house outside of Paris. Alfredo’s father insists that she break with his son in order not to jeopardise the marriage prospects of Alfredo’s sister. Violetta accedes to his wish and cuts off relations. In a showdown at another party Violetta tries to convince Alfredo that she’s in love with the Baron, causing Alfredo to hurl his gambling winnings at her feet, calling them “fees for services rendered”. Soon afterwards, at the height of the Paris carnival, Violetta is on her deathbed. She receives Alfredo, who has heard from his father her real reason for leaving him. Violetta forgives him, gives him her blessing and dies.

But the Biblical epic about power, love and religion is certainly more than a mere historical drama that might have served as a Hollywood blockbuster, and which places the most stringent demands on the soloists, chorus and stage machinery. Human conflicts are expressed here in highly emotional music and leave an indelible mark, to the present day, on this first, genuinely major operatic success by composer Giuseppe Verdi. When Amelia reappears 25 years later, she becomes a pawn in a power struggle that eventually claims Simon. Verdi lived with the soprano Giuseppina Strepponi for 15 years before they married in 1859. She already had two children out of wedlock with two different men. Like Violetta and Alfredo, they also experienced the judgment of society. It even went so far that Verdi broke off contact with his parents in order to live with the woman he loved.

Nearly two hundred people on stage, live horses, a grand set, and lavish costumes – Mark Weiss's Nabucco is a total spectacle, a true synthesis of the arts. "Opera isn't made like that anymore" – all the more reason to see it. It's a historical production in the strict sense – as a staple of the National Opera, in the repertoire since 1992, but also because the director consciously crafted his project as if Verdi's contemporaries had done it, emphasizing monumentality and additional, almost circus-like attractions. Musically, this early Verdi work is atypical, somewhere between an opera and an oratorio, because the real protagonist is the chorus. Its constant presence is crowned by " Va pensiero," the most famous choral aria in history, audible and overwhelming here, all the more so because it's sung against the backdrop of the lowered Iron Curtain (the Wailing Wall is projected onto it), which amplifies and echoes the sounds. The director himself intended his work as a pastiche of 19th-century opera, which justifies the clash of "high and low" – Nebuchadnezzar's horse-drawn aria, as tradition would have it, often sends shivers not only through the audience but also through the animal itself, which, so to speak, releases its tension, and the desert scenery is enriched with yet another prop, from a distance resembling small hamada stones.

Follow the story of Violetta - a high-class courtesan in 19th-century Paris - and her passionate love affair with Alfredo, a young nobleman. Despite their developing romance, the relationship is soon put under pressure as societal expectations, misunderstandings and illness threaten to tear them apart - ultimately leading to a heart breaking conclusion.

Le Trouvère is an opera by Giuseppe Verdi, a French version of Il Trovatore. The story is about two brothers, separated at birth under tragic circumstances, who unknowingly become enemies. Manrico, has been raised as a troubadour, while the other, Count di Luna, grows up as a nobleman. Their rivalry leads to war, love triangles, and a tragic ending when one brother accidentally orders the execution of the other. They do not realise they are brothers until much later. Their rivalry becomes deadly, especially as both fall in love with the same woman, Leonora.

Verdi’s masterwork Il trovatore is a tangled web of vengeance, rivalry, and regret. This is grand opera at its most dramatic.

When a gypsy woman is burnt at the stake for allegedly bewitching a child, her daughter, Azucena, swears revenge.

Azucena steals the child’s brother to throw him into the flames of her mother’s burning pyre, however, accidentally throws in her own child. Horrified by her mistake, she brings up the stolen child as her own. This haunting family secret lays the groundwork for Verdi’s tragedy.

Violetta is one of opera's most iconic heroines
. However, the premiere of La Traviata
scandalized the audience with its critique of the bourgeoisie and its vices,
resulting in an initial failure. This work, based on
a contemporary text, anticipates the dramas of the
realist school.
The score shows Verdi at his best:
with dramatically effective music and innovative
in harmony, melody, and rhythm. The prelude is exemplary,
alluding both to Violetta's frivolous life and to the
central themes of love and death. Verdi breaks
musical molds by opening with the image of
the protagonist's death, then moving on to her
suffering, her love for Alfredo, and, finally, the
carefree Parisian party.
