Scottish Opera presents a breathtaking production of Giuseppe Verdi's "La traviata," a heady passion-filled classic that delves into the heart-rending story of love, sacrifice, and redemption. This season, the opera returns to captivate audiences across Scotland with performances scheduled in Glasgow, Aberdeen, Inverness, and Edinburgh from May 8 to June 15, 2024.

"La traviata" tells the poignant tale of Violetta Valéry, a courtesan living in the hedonistic high society of Paris, who is caught between her desire for love and the harsh realities of her life. When the young and idealistic Alfredo Germont offers her a chance at true happiness, Violetta sees a possibility for a new life. However, societal pressures and her past threaten to tear apart their budding romance. The opera, based on Alexandre Dumas fils’ novel, which was inspired by a real-life woman, has moved audiences for generations and inspired adaptations in film and theatre, including "Pretty Woman" and "Moulin Rouge."

This production, directed by the acclaimed Sir David McVicar, with sumptuous designs by Tanya McCallin, focuses on the core themes of love and loss. It first premiered at Scottish Opera in 2008 and has since been celebrated in opera houses across Europe. The 2024 revival brings Hye-Youn Lee in the role of Violetta, marking her debut in Scotland, alongside Ji-Min Park as Alfredo. The opera is conducted by Stuart Stratford, with a talented cast and creative team bringing this tragic love story to life.

Performances are scheduled as follows:
- Theatre Royal Glasgow: May 8, 10, 14, 16, and 18 at 7.15pm, with a matinee on May 12 at 3pm.
- His Majesty's Theatre, Aberdeen: May 30 and June 1 at 7.15pm.

Grammy Award-nominated soprano Chelsea Basler continues to make her mark on an extensive array of operatic roles with her unique combination of vocal appeal and artistry. Praied for her "luminous voice" with its "easy soaring range," she has been noted for her "wonderful acting" and declared "simply superb" by Opera Today. In the spring of 2019, Ms. Basler appeared with the Boston Lyric Opera as Moira in Poultries Ruder's The Handmaid's Tale and made a company debut with Boston Midsummer opera as Clorinda in La Cenerentola. Opera North is thrilled to present its first-ever performances of Giuseppe Verdi's "Simon Boccanegra," a riveting opera set in 14th-century Genoa, filled with political intrigue and personal tragedy. This concert staging event will take place from April 24 to May 24, 2025, across various prestigious venues including St Georges Hall in Bradford, Royal Concert Hall in Nottingham, The Glasshouse in Gateshead, Liverpool Philharmonic Hall, Hull City Hall, and the Southbank Centre.

"Simon Boccanegra" tells the compelling story of a former pirate turned people's champion, Simon Boccanegra, and his decades-long feud with political rival and nobleman, Jacopo Fiesco. The twist in their tale comes from the deep family ties they share, with one being the father and the other the grandfather of Amelia, adding layers of love, loss, and reconciliation to the narrative. The opera, which premiered in 1857 and was later revised in 1881 by Verdi and librettist Arrigo Boito, is celebrated for its Shakespearean drama and contains Verdi’s passionate plea for peace and unity, especially in its famous Council Chamber scene.

The cast includes Roland Wood as Simon Boccanegra, Brindley Sherratt as Jacopo Fiesco, Andrés Presno as Gabriele Adorno, and Mandla Mndebele as Paolo Albiani, under the baton of conductor Antony Hermus and direction by PJ Harris. This production follows Opera North's acclaimed concert stagings of other large-scale Italian classics, promising an unmissable event for opera enthusiasts.

The opera will be sung in Italian with English subtitles, ensuring it is accessible to a wide audience. The running time is approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes. Ticket prices start from £16, with digital and printed programs available for purchase in advance. Verdi master James Conlon conducts Rigoletto, featuring some of the most famous music in history. Quinn Kelsey, the premier Verdi baritone of his generation, returns to star in the title role, with tenor René Barbera as the suave and sadistic Duke and Italian soprano Rosa Feola as Gilda, his unsuspecting prey. Stage director Tomer Zvulun updates the action to Mussolini’s Italy, transporting audiences to a realm of glittering grandeur that’s absolutely rotten to the core.

This choreographic jewel is combined with two recent highlights: Ted Brandsen's The Chairman Dances and David Dawson's The Four Seasons .
