Experience the grandeur of Verdi's "Aida" as the Boston Lyric Opera presents a specially staged concert of this timeless masterpiece. Set in the ancient lands of Egypt, the story revolves around the poignant love triangle between the valiant commander Radamès, the Ethiopian princess Aida, and the Egyptian princess Amneris. This production, conducted by BLO Music Director David Angus, promises to captivate audiences with its powerful arias, dramatic duets, and some of the most exhilarating choral works ever composed.

Opening this concert is the thrilling Overture to Verdi's La Forza del Destino, dramatically contrasting the constrictive-ness of Fate with the expansiveness of Love. One of the best-known and most beloved concert works, Dvořák's Symphony No. 9 ("From the New World") reflects the composer's visit to the American heartland, his love of American literature, and a profound reverence for Black spirituals. Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring, which some consider to be the single most influential composition to be written in the entire 20th century, "changed everything," as Mr. Zander puts it. Its power to amaze, shock, and thrill has never waned.

In recent years, even decades, it has become a common practice to completely or partially stage certain oratorical works. After Messiah and Matthäus-Passion, nothing could be more suitable to continue the practice than Giuseppe Verdi's Requiem, which is claimed by many, half-seriously, but certainly aptly, to be their "favourite opera". Even though it is a funeral mass, which traditionally does not require a stage – in fact, it specifically keeps it away from itself – its drama, emotionality, and the extremity of mood nuances almost naturally demand a spectacle. It must not be forgotten that in Verdi's these works were not composed for today’s neutral concert halls, church works were placed in sacred spaces, where they could interact with the environment. Even in a traditional concert form, a performance at an opera house gives the work a new visual appearance, but if the performance creates the possibility of a more organic theatrical experience, it can also become more capable of articulating the main message of a very human fear of death more tangibly according to the director's interpretation. The performance with special visuals is created by Ádám Tulassay and his creative team.

To start our Classics Series, Music Director Nicholas Hersh and the MSO will guide us through the four seasons. The evening will start with Mendelssohn’s romantic Overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Ortiz’s La Calaca which features driving rhythms and stirring melodies inspired by the traditions of Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) that celebrate the afterlife in Mexican culture. Finally, we’ll dive deeper into each season with a “mixtape” from Hersh featuring one movement each from Vivaldi, Richter, Ysaÿe, and Piazzolla to create an exploration not only of the seasons, but of each of their cultures.

This quartet of dances demonstrates a wide variety of repertory. Making its debut with the Company is a work from choreographer Lar Lubovitch, set to Brahms piano compositions, commissioned by New York City Center and created in 2021 on two of NYCB’s principal dancers. Casco Phil takes you on a journey that began hundreds of years ago and introduces you to folk music from Hungary, stirring Klezmer from Romania, festive French music at the Court of Louis XIV, and much more. Giuseppe Verdi was moved to write his Requiem by the death of friends and colleagues. The result was a high-octane work whose expression of grief, faith and judgement drew such dramatic music from its composer that some thought it profane. First performed 150 years ago, and given its British premiere at the Royal Albert Hall the following year, it is one of music’s most vivid masterpieces. Following his Prom with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales last night (see Prom 5), Ryan Bancroft returns this time with two choirs, lending suitably large forces for this powerful setting of the Latin Mass for the Dead.

The Gala Concert will feature performances by a remarkable lineup of vocal talents, including sopranos Natalya Romaniw, Madison Leonard, and Isabelle Peters; mezzo-soprano Christine Rice; tenor Olive Sewell; baritones Roderick Williams and Joshua Hopkins; and bass-baritone Henry Waddington. Accompanied by the Garsington Opera Chorus and the Garsington Opera Youth Company, the evening promises an array of highlights from operatic masterpieces by Beethoven, Britten, Dvořák, Handel, Mozart, Rossini, Smetana, Strauss, Tchaikovsky, and Verdi.

The program includes excerpts from iconic works such as Beethoven's "Fidelio," Britten's "A Midsummer Night's Dream," Dvořák's "Rusalka," Handel's "Semele," Mozart's "Così fan tutte," "Idomeneo," and "The Magic Flute," Rossini's "The Barber of Seville," Smetana's "The Bartered Bride," Strauss's "Der Rosenkavalier," Tchaikovsky's "Eugene Onegin," and Verdi's "La traviata."

This special event also celebrates the opening of Garsington Studios. Attendees are invited to enjoy an afternoon at Wormsley, including a visit to the Studios, tea during a cricket match, a Young Artists’ recital, and a chance to meet the gardeners in the Walled Garden. The Gala Concert itself will be a showcase of our favourite opera arias, providing an immersive experience into the world of opera.

Audiences will also be treated to the beautiful Intermezzo from Cavalleria Rusticana by Peter Mascagni and selections from Georges Bizet’s Carmen.

Adding to the evening’s charm, the program includes Valerie Coleman’s Seven O’Clock Shout, Aaron Copland’s Saturday Night Waltz and Hoe Down from Rodeo, and selections from George Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess arranged by Bennett. The concert will also feature a tribute to Frank Sinatra with Salute to Ol’ Blue Eyes, an Armed Forces Salute arranged by Lowden, and the rousing Stars and Stripes Forever by John Philip Sousa.

This event is presented in collaboration with the Prudential presents North2Shore Festival and is sponsored by the County of Essex with additional support from Citizens Bank.

La traviata, one of Verdi's best-known titles, takes to the stage of the Teatro Real in Willy Decker's iconic production, which could not be performed in 2020 due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. This captivating presentation, led by the esteemed Lou Barrella, will delve into the dramatic moments of operatic weddings that are unexpectedly disrupted, creating unforgettable theatrical and musical episodes.

The talk will explore various operas where nuptial bliss is shattered by unforeseen events. From Mozart’s "Don Giovanni," where Zerlina is swayed by the Don's charm, to the tragic outcomes in Donizetti’s "Lucia di Lammermoor" and Puccini’s "Madama Butterfly" following the signing of wedding contracts. The comedic twist in Donizetti’s "Don Pasquale" with a phony wedding contract, and the climactic interruption in "Il Trovatore" when Manrico learns of his mother’s capture, will also be highlighted.
