The Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado has repeatedly explored the fascinating world of the Amazon and captured its beauty and threats in images. Now he has enriched this photographic project with a musical encounter: Together with conductor Simone Menezes, he combines his images with the sounds composed by his compatriot Heitor Villa-Lobos in 1958 as a tribute to the Amazon. Simone Menezes arranged Villa-Lobos' opulent "Floresta do Amazonas" for orchestra and soprano, and Salgado matched each musical sequence with the appropriate photograph. "A perfect connection, almost as if Villa-Lobos' music was written for Salgado's photos," describes Simone Menezes the result. The Dresden Philharmonic, under the direction of Simone Menezes, performs Villa-Lobos' powerful Rainforest Suite, while following Salgado's precise dramaturgy, the corresponding photographic works are shown on the large screen.

Created in 1948 in Los Angeles before hitting Broadway, Magdalena blends the codes of the American musical with sounds inspired by South American traditions. Set in Colombia, on the banks of the Magdalena River, the plot immerses the viewer in a Colombian village plagued by corruption: the arrival of a foreign engineer upsets the fragile balance between local traditions, religious power, and political issues. The rich and colorful score reflects composer Villa-Lobos's ambition to fuse musical cultures. While the work was warmly acclaimed at its premiere in the United States, it remains rarely performed. Opéra Junior is reviving it this season, in a version revisited and adapted for its young performers. A rare opportunity to discover a committed, moving, and spectacular work, driven by the enthusiasm and freshness of youth.

The acclaimed vocal ensemble Gentlemen Singers has accepted an invitation to our special concert in May. In the opening notes of Echos of Folksongs by Leoš Janáček, we can hear the young composer influenced by folk music, his travels in Moravia and his first experiences as a choirmaster.

In stark contrast there are the Brigand Songs commissioned from Bohuslav Martinů at the end of his life by the Prague Teachers’ Choir (I) and the Moravian Teachers’ Choir (II).

For the May concert, Gentlemen Singers, together with the violinist Lucia Fulka Kopsová, will also perform Zdeněk Lukáš’s song cycle Spring is Coming, whose choral works are inspired by folk motifs and are characterized by melodic inventiveness, rhythmic vitality and ability to express strong emotions.

Although Haydn’s Symphony No. 45, the “Farewell,” is known for its dramatic Adagio final movement where the musicians exit the stage, it stands on its own as a beautiful, affecting work. Haydn was also an accomplished opera composer; his opera L’isola disabitata tells the story of sisters stranded on a desert island for 13 years, developed in partnership with the most famous librettist of his time, Pietro Metastasio.

Recognized by Le Monde for his “personality that expresses itself naturally in fantasy, in the fresh and enchanting sense of the term,” this astounding French accordionist makes his Princeton University Concerts debut with a bold, tango-inspired program that proves his instrument’s rightful place in the classical world. At just 24, Ould became the first accordionist nominated as a Newly Discovered Talent at the Victoires de la Musique Classique awards, and he is redefining what the accordion can do—blending Baroque elegance, Romantic passion, and cutting-edge contemporary works (some featuring electronics) written just for him, including by Princeton University graduate student composers. An infinite cosmos of colors and sounds, deep darkness and dazzling light, untamed, mysterious landscapes, the largest forest area on earth: the wilderness of the Amazon jungle in South America is a place of overwhelming beauty and biodiversity. Inspired by the shimmering nature of the jungle with all its fascinating facets, the Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos created a powerful symphonic cantata.

Guitar sensation Raphaël Feuillâtre is rapidly becoming the new voice of classical guitar. Since winning the prestigious Guitar Foundation of America competition in 2018, this Djibouti-born French virtuoso has dazzled audiences from Carnegie Hall to Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, and through his prolific recording career on Deutsche Grammophon. His most recent album, Spanish Serenades, showcases the many Latin faces of the guitar, and forms the core of his Caramoor program combining popular rhythms, choreographic bounce and sophisticated counterpoint.

Diesmal geht es nach Südamerika: Der Brasilianer Heitor Villa-Lobos und der Argentinier Alberto Ginastera verbanden den rhythmischen Drive ihrer Heimat mit der kompositorischen Raffinesse der europäischen Moderne. Astor Piazzolla machte den vormals verruchten Tango Argentino konzertsaalfähig; in seinem wohl berühmtesten Stück verabschiedete er sich mit sehnsuchtsvollen Klängen von seinem Vater. Darius Milhaud galt in den 1920ern als enfant terrible der Pariser Musikszene; als Attaché des französischen Botschafters in Rio de Janeiro schnappte er lokale Sounds auf und integrierte sie in seine Werke. This concert is a celebration of musical mastery, featuring a diverse program that includes Villa-Lobos' Bachianas Brasileiras No.1, Johann Carl Christian Fischer's Symphony with Eight Obbligato Timpani, and Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 4.

The concert opens with a unique piece that showcases the cello section, followed by a concerto that percussion enthusiasts will adore, featuring eight timpani played by the principal timpanist, Dan Karas. Addy Sterrett, the most recent winner of the Bach Festival Keller Award, will grace the stage with her soprano voice, adding to the evening's enchantment.

Mahler & Eight Timpani

Shin-ichi Fukuda began playing the classical guitar at the age of eleven under the direction of Tatsuya Saitoh and has since pursued a brilliant career as a leading guitarist. He has performed with orchestras and as a solo recitalist in concert halls around the world, including New York’s Merkin Concert Hall, Tokyo’s Metropolitan Museum, and Athens’s Megaron Concert Hall. Fukuda has earned international acclaim for his musicianship, receiving first prizes in the 1st Carpentras International Guitar Competition and the 23rd Paris International Competition, as well as top prizes in competitions and festivals in Italy, Spain, and Japan. Fukuda’s repertoire spans from the Renaissance to today, and he has premiered many pieces by 21st-century composers, such as Leo Brouwer’s Concerto da Requiem, an homage to Toru Takemitsu that is dedicated to Fukuda. A highly gifted and enthusiastic teacher, Fukuda is a guest professor at Shanghai Conservatory in China and has trained many pupils who have gone on to attain the highest honors, including Kaori Muraji, Daisuke Suzuki, and Yasuji Ohagi. He has produced 84 recordings in a career that spans more than four decades.

Nature, its beauty, its endangerment: These are the themes of our Biennale and of this concert, which takes us around the world. It begins with a new work by Finnish composer Outi Tarkiainen, whose work is strongly inspired by her native Lapland. Brett Dean’s Fire Music in turn refers to a devastating bushfire in Australia in 2009. Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring takes us on to North America, while Heitor Villa-Lobos’ Chôros No. 10 echoes the birdsong of the Amazon. Marin Alsop makes her debut with the Berliner Philharmoniker.

Maurice Ravel's imaginative and even humorous La valse is a tribute to the waltz and Johann Strauss II. Originally, the working title for this music was "Vienne", then he changed it from the French spelling to German, "Wien", before finally deciding that the fitting title would be La valse. Ravel and Argentine Alberto Ginastera frame the program, the latter with fiery dance in the form of Malambo.
