Kabalevsky’s witty and sparkling Colas Breugnon Overture bursts open the season with swagger and wit. Pianist Mackenzie Melemed brings grandeur and brilliance to Amy Beach’s richly romantic Piano Concerto. Prokofiev’s searing music from Romeo and Juliet closes the night, where love, violence, and heartbreak blaze across one of the orchestra’s most vivid scores.

For his recital, our “artiste étoile” Augustin Hadelich has planned something special: he will appear with Seong-Jin Cho, South Korea’s superstar pianist, for the very first time — world-class meets world-class. The program could hardly be lovelier: the delicate, deeply romantic Violin Romance by the American composer Amy Beach; Leoš Janáček’s earthy, passionate Sonata with its wild dance rhythms that tear apart any sense of regular meter; and Sergei Prokofiev’s weightless D major Sonata, written in the midst of World War II yet sounding anything but apocalyptic. The evening opens with Johannes Brahms and his melody-rich G major Sonata, which contains a famous song quotation. Hadelich says he came to understand this composer anew after immersing himself in his chamber music, and in general he considers making music in small ensembles the best training for performing with orchestra and, more broadly, for engaging with people. As he puts it, this is how you learn to listen, to respond, to enter into dialogue. A school for life.

When the brass players of the Lucerne Festival Orchestra gather around trumpeter Reinhold Friedrich and trombonist Jörgen van Rijen to form a brass band, the atmosphere reaches fever pitch in no time at all. Praised by the American Prize for their “careful choices, elegant phrasing and beauty of sound virtually always,” The Luminae Trio, based in New York City, performs lesser-known music of the past and present alongside beloved classics. The group, comprised of pianist Jestin Pieper, cellist Jacob Nordlinger, and violinist Elizabeth Wright, formed during the Covid-19 pandemic as a response to the need to keep the arts alive. Individually, its members lead active performing and teaching careers, having performed in Europe, Asia, South America, Canada, and throughout the United States, on stages including Carnegie Hall, Bruno Walter Auditorium, United Nations, and the Kennedy Center.

There’s an elusive logic that occurs only in dreams, that nocturnal state where the human mind processes the flood of impressions and information it takes in every day, sifting and sorting without interruption from the waking world. In this very special and wide-ranging program, Manchester Music Festival artistic director Philip Setzer is our guide through a vivid, varied dreamscape in sound—a journey epitomized by composer Paul Epstein’s appropriately titled Dreamsonata, which leaps from Viennese ballroom sounds to midwestern ragtime in the blink of an ear. The rest of the program blazes a similarly unlikely yet ultimately harmonious path, from the courtly String Quartet of Benjamin Franklin (yes, really) to Samuel Barber’s elegiac Adagio for Strings, by way of Scott Joplin, Amy Beach, and Carlos Simon.

KASA Quartet, First Prize winner of the 2017 Coltman Chamber Music Competition, was founded in the summer of 2016 by Andy Liang, Aaron Schwartz, Stephanie Price-Wong and Kyle Price. KASA utilizes its fluency in multiple styles to curate fresh, innovative, genre-defying performances that harken the classical standard repertoire and fuse it with favorites of the jazz, musical theater, folk and pop standards. The quartet takes pride in creating and interpreting original arrangements and transcriptions of works by Jacob Collier, Marvin Hamlisch, George Gershwin among others. The ensemble has taught and performed as featured artists for the Ravinia Festival, Saratoga Performing Arts Center, Austin Chamber Music Center, Second City Chamber Series, Miami Music Project, and Chamber Music Connection in addition to holding a residency each summer at the Caroga Lake Music Festival since its inception. KASA’s shared passion for bringing multiple genres together for their programming has attracted various audiences and presenters from different musical interests together for memorable performances and projects. KASA released its debut album in 2022, Forever Wild, Vol. 1 with each track featuring guest collaborations spanning a wide array of genres and styles.

As echoes of The Lark Ascending continue to resonate across the town, we look forward to bringing another vibrant programme of string repertoire to the Victoria Theatre, celebrating the very best of English music alongside inspiring works from around the world. The programme includes Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on Greensleeves, Piazzolla’s The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires, and Grieg’s much-loved Holberg Suite.

We are especially pleased to premiere a new arrangement of Malcolm Arnold’s English Dances and to share the stage with talented young musicians from the Calderdale Music Youth Ensemble. "Orpheus' Comet" by the Bulgarian-English composer Dobrinka Tabakova is a homage to Monteverdi's opera "L'Orfeo" and the Orpheus myth in general. At first, a buzzing swarm of bees appears to be circling the orchestra—an allusion to the beekeeper Aristaeus, who (according to the myth) was responsible for the death of Orpheus's lover, Eurydice. Gradually, solemn melodies emerge, and at the end, the (slightly altered) opening hymn from "L'Orfeo" resounds, pompous as a stadium fanfare.

Brandon Patrick George, hailed as a “knockout musician with a gorgeous sound” by The Philadelphia Inquirer, is a GRAMMY-winning flutist whose repertoire extends from the Baroque era to today. He is the flutist of Imani Winds and has appeared as a soloist with the Atlanta, Baltimore, and Albany symphonies, American Composers Orchestra, and the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, among others.

Although it has been said that Mozart did not particularly appreciate the flute, he nevertheless dedicated to it, in addition to a concerto in which he married it to the harp, a Quartet that does not fit into any box: imitating a theme by Paisiello in the first movement then obeying hilarious indications in a Rondeau noted as "gracefully animated, but not too fast, not too slow either, moreover, like this... like that... with a lot of fire and expression", the flute stands out for its caprices. Emmanuel Pahud delights in it, before defending pieces by the Lyonnais Ferroud and the American Amy Beach.

Eric Luebke is a fourth year music education student at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. As a singer, Eric has performed in the University Opera and in the community of Madison through solo and chamber performances with First United Methodist Church, Madison Youth Choirs, and Just Bach. Eric also plays piano, bass guitar, and percussion, and has worked at the UW–Madison Summer Music Clinic for three consecutive seasons. This unforgettable evening is rooted in the past—its struggles, its stories, and the ways composers reflect on what came before. We begin with Brahms’ Tragic Overture—a storm of drama and complexity, full of weight and philosophical tension. From there, cellist Tae-Yeon Kim, winner of the Lutosławski Competition and not yet 20, brings lyrical fire to one of the cornerstones of the Cello Repertoire -  Dvořák’s Cello Concerto in B minor. Towering and intimate, this is Romanticism at its most human. The program closes with Amy Beach’s “Gaelic Symphony”—a groundbreaking work rich in lush harmonies and folk-inspired themes. Mozart joins forces with two twentieth-century composers in this unique programme, united by their inventive sound combinations. Amy Beach’s Theme and Variations exudes Romantic lyricism, while Arthur Bliss’s expressive chamber music sparks vivid imagery with its evocative titles. Mozart’s Oboe Quartet remains a cornerstone of the oboe repertoire, showcasing his flair for chamber music. Experience the distinctive interplay of strings and winds as Antwerp Symphony Orchestra musicians bring these works to life.

To parallel our celebrations of Symphony Hall’s 125th anniversary, frequent guest pianist Randall Hodgkinson joins the Chamber Players for a program featuring composers active at the time of the hall’s opening in 1900. Amy Beach and Charles Martin Loeffler were both prominent in Boston’s musical community at the turn of the last century. Charles Koechlin and Camille Saint-Saëns represent two generations of Parisian music, while Mahler (and his younger colleague Schoenberg) were both active in Vienna.

Grażyna Bacewicz’s astonishing quartet for four violins starts our season, and the concert concludes with Franz Schubert’s masterful Trout quintet, all performed by Marin Symphony all-stars.

September’s chamber concert will be headlined by acclaimed Romanian pianist Alexandra Dariescu, who will also appear as soloist in the Orchestra’s season-opening concert the previous evening. The programme presents a diverse selection of solo and chamber music, ranging from Johann Sebastian Bach and Clara Schumann to James Lee III and Missy Mazzoli. Audiences will also have the rare opportunity to hear works by lesser-known composers such as Emmy Schäfer Klein and Leokadiya Kashperova. The ERSO Chamber Ensemble will be joined by a chamber arrangement of Wolfgang Amadus Mozart’s well-known Rondo in D major for piano and orchestra. Additional featured composers include Amy Beach, Florence Price, and Nadia Boulanger.

The HSO Wind Quintet presents a program of American Landscapes:  music of composers Amy Beach, Eric Ewazen, and Valerie Coleman evokes the calm of a New Hampshire forest, the grandeur of the Roaring Fork river in Colorado, and the bluesy southern charm along the Mississippi River.  The program concludes in Michigan, with a piece commissioned and premiered in the state: Samuel Barber’s famous Summer Music.

JoAnna Farrer is the Concertmaster of the Savannah Philharmonic, and a member of the New Jersey Symphony. She has performed as a soloist with many ensembles, including the GoteborgsSymfoniker, the Philadelphia Orchestra, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, and the Israel Philharmonic. As a concertmaster, she has worked with conductors such as James Conlon, James DePreist, and Lorin Maazel, including performances of Britten’s “The Turn of the Screw” at the Kennedy Center with Maestro Maazel. In previous seasons, Farrer has served as guest concertmaster of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, and toured with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, and National Arts Centre Orchestra of Canada.

Set sail on a season of breathtaking music with a concert that sweeps from the stormy seas to the grandeur of the opera stage. Rossini’s William Tell Overture launches the evening with cinematic energy, followed by Amy Beach’s Bal Masqué, a dazzling orchestral dance. Acclaimed baritone Kenneth Overton joins us once again for selections from Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro and Don Giovanni, bringing wit, drama, and passion to these operatic masterpieces. Finally, Debussy’s La Mer immerses us in the ever-shifting beauty of the sea, painting an orchestral canvas of movement and light. With sweeping melodies, captivating drama, and a touch of the unexpected, this season opener promises an evening where music dances, waves crash, and imagination soars.

and Amy Beach, one of the first American female composers to reach notoriety. This performance also includes the world premiere of Two Pastorals for Violin and Piano – the ninth of ten works commissioned by Tippet Rise in 2022 from Valentyn Silvestrov, Ukraine’s leading living composer.
