We begin with Brahms’ Tragic Overture—a storm of drama and complexity, full of weight and philosophical tension. From there, cellist Tae-Yeon Kim, winner of the Lutosławski Competition and not yet 20, brings lyrical fire to one of the cornerstones of the Cello Repertoire -  Dvořák’s Cello Concerto in B minor. Towering and intimate, this is Romanticism at its most human. The program closes with Amy Beach’s “Gaelic Symphony”—a groundbreaking work rich in lush harmonies and folk-inspired themes. Written as a response to Dvořák’s New World Symphony, Beach chose to honor her own roots, weaving the songs and spirit of Irish immigrants into a sweeping symphonic landscape filled with all that we love about the Romantic Period. It’s music that remembers, reimagines, and reclaims.

To parallel our celebrations of Symphony Hall’s 125th anniversary, frequent guest pianist Randall Hodgkinson joins the Chamber Players for a program featuring composers active at the time of the hall’s opening in 1900. Amy Beach and Charles Martin Loeffler were both prominent in Boston’s musical community at the turn of the last century. Charles Koechlin and Camille Saint-Saëns represent two generations of Parisian music, while Mahler (and his younger colleague Schoenberg) were both active in Vienna.

JoAnna Farrer is the Concertmaster of the Savannah Philharmonic, and a member of the New Jersey Symphony. She has performed as a soloist with many ensembles, including the GoteborgsSymfoniker, the Philadelphia Orchestra, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, and the Israel Philharmonic. As a concertmaster, she has worked with conductors such as James Conlon, James DePreist, and Lorin Maazel, including performances of Britten’s “The Turn of the Screw” at the Kennedy Center with Maestro Maazel. In previous seasons, Farrer has served as guest concertmaster of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, and toured with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, and National Arts Centre Orchestra of Canada.

Michael and I curated this program for violin and piano to celebrate that spirit of innovation and cultural exchange, highlighting works composed during the twentieth century. We begin with Fritz Kreisler’s Praeludium and Allegro, a lush reimagining of Baroque melody. Charles Ives follows with his inventive Violin Sonata no. 4, blending hymns, folk tunes, and bold harmonies to create a vibrantly eclectic soundscape of American life. The first half closes with Ernest Bloch’s Violin Sonata no. 2, Poème mystique, which shifts to a more introspective tone, offering profound emotional depth rooted in his Jewish heritage. The second half opens with John Adams’s Road Movies, a rhythmic portrayal of contemporary life, and continues with Amy Beach’s Romance for Violin and Piano, honoring one of America’s pioneering female composers. We conclude with Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess Suite, a brilliant fusion of classical and jazz traditions–a testament to the cultural mosaic of twentieth-century American music.”

Mary Bevan released her debut solo disc, Voyages, in 2017 (with pianist Joseph Middleton on the Signum label), which explores the music of eminent French composers and the settings they wrote for the poems of Charles Baudelaire. For this recital, Mary revisits her favourite repertoire from Voyages, including songs by Duparc, Fauré, Debussy, Chabrier, and more, but this time, each song is paired with another by a female composer writing around the same time. In this way, the recital seeks to bring the female composers from out of the shadow of their male counterparts and restore them to their rightful places as composers of equal quality and interest.

After two musical bicycle tours, the journey isn't over yet: The French chamber orchestra Les Forces Majeures hops from their bikes onto the stage and rounds off their visit to our region with a concert in Bietigheim. The musicians also continue the themes of travel and mobility dramaturgically, selecting suitable works by mostly French composers: With Poulenc, we travel by train and on foot; with Haydn, Debussy, and Ravel, we continue on a boat; Schumann whisks us away into the forest; and Josef Strauss dances a bicycle polka with us. Whether on foot, at sea, or on wheels: Les Forces Majeures are bustling and inspire a spirit of mobilization and departure—literally and figuratively.

Mendelssohn and Clara Schumann preceded Amy Beach, paving the way for the tonal worlds of the 20th Century Romantics (like Rachmaninoff and Beach). Sergei Rachmaninoff and Amy Beach were contemporaries, and I find that their music pairs together well. Since they were both pianists, Rachmaninoff and Beach were not only incredibly romantic in their compositional styles, but also both deeply connected to the physicality of the piano in their compositional languages.” —Audrey Vardanaga, Piano/Curator

The program features a meticulously curated selection of works that pay homage to Gaelic heritage. Experience the stirring blend of traditional Irish music and symphonic grandeur in John Williams' Suite from "Far and Away," and let the award-winning violinist Rachel Barton Pine captivate you with her rendition of Max Bruch’s "Scottish Fantasy," a piece that weaves together beloved Scottish folk tunes. The evening will also celebrate Amy Beach's "Gaelic Symphony," a pioneering composition that beautifully incorporates Irish folk songs into the romantic symphonic tradition.

Under the baton of the esteemed Conductor Lawrence Golan, known for his compelling interpretations and dynamic leadership, the York Symphony Orchestra will bring these masterpieces to life. Golan's expertise and passion for music promise to make this a deeply moving and memorable performance.

Before the concert, attendees are invited to a Pre-Concert Talk from 6:30-7:00 PM at the front of the Appell Center’s Strand Theatre stage. Her PCMS recital debut with pianist Pallavi Mahidhara highlights works by American women composers Amy Beach and Nokuthula Ngwenyama. What kind of woman is she? The former professional tennis player Marie Jacquot seems to have been taking the stage by storm for several years. Since the 2023/24 season, the Frenchwoman has been principal guest conductor of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, and from the 2024/25 season she will also take on the role of chief conductor of the Royal Danish Theatre Copenhagen. And for the 2026/27 season she will become chief conductor of the WDR Symphony Orchestra. Here the hackneyed phrase becomes true: we will be hearing a lot more from her.

Der Ozean. Unendliche Weiten, blaue Wogen, schimmernde Wellen. Fast alle Komponisten haben sich irgendwann einmal von ihm inspirieren lassen. Doch dieses Konzert bringt keine sanft plätschernden Beachclub-Sounds, sondern geht aufs Ganze. Der Japaner Toru Takemitsu setzte mit „Toward the Sea“ 1981 im Auftrag von Greenpeace ein Statement gegen den Walfang und orientierte sich dabei an „Moby Dick“. Ebenfalls ein Seemonster ist der Leviathan, in diesem Fall aus der jüdischen Mythologie. Der neuseeländisch-griechische Komponist John Psathas nutzte die Figur für ein spektakuläres Schlagzeugkonzert für das trommelnde Energiebündel Alexej Gerassimez – und zugleich als Mahnung an den Klimawandel, auf Initiative der UN. Anna Clyne wiederum begreift das Meer als Metapher für das Weibliche. Ihr packendes Stück „Restless Oceans“ schrieb sie für ein reines Frauenorchester; uraufgeführt wurde es zur Eröffnung des Weltwirtschaftsforums in Davos 2019. Eines ihrer Idole dürfte Amy Beach sein: Deren „Gaelic Symphony“ von 1894 ist die erste Sinfonie einer weiblichen amerikanischen Komponistin und erinnert an schottische und irische Volkmusik.

Experience the profound mystery and beauty of Elgar's Enigma Variations with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of the esteemed Estonian conductor Anu Tali. This captivating concert series will unfold over three days, starting on Friday, November 1, 2024, at 7:30pm, continuing on Saturday, November 2, 2024, at 7:30pm, and concluding on Sunday, November 3, 2024, at 3:00pm.

The performances will feature the remarkable talents of pianist Anne-Marie McDermott, a favorite of the DSO audience, who will bring her exquisite touch to Amy Beach’s Piano Concerto and Alisson Kruusmaa’s ethereal Five Arabesques for Chamber Orchestra. The highlight of the evening, Elgar's Enigma Variations, presents a musical puzzle that has intrigued audiences for over a century. Elgar's masterpiece, composed of variations that depict 14 of his friends through mesmerizing melodies and inside jokes, centers around the enigmatic "Nimrod Variation," a heartfelt homage to a dear friend.

This event is not just a concert but a celebration of distinguished women in music, showcasing the works of Amy Beach and Alisson Kruusmaa alongside Elgar's timeless composition. It promises to be a night of emotional depth, technical brilliance, and historical intrigue.
