Although it has been said that Mozart did not particularly appreciate the flute, he nevertheless dedicated to it, in addition to a concerto in which he married it to the harp, a Quartet that does not fit into any box: imitating a theme by Paisiello in the first movement then obeying hilarious indications in a Rondeau noted as "gracefully animated, but not too fast, not too slow either, moreover, like this... like that... with a lot of fire and expression", the flute stands out for its caprices. Emmanuel Pahud delights in it, before defending pieces by the Lyonnais Ferroud and the American Amy Beach.

Learn how Mozart (a musical prodigy) inspired Amy Beach, an American prodigy born in 1867, to become the first successful American female composer with her first symphony premiered by the Boston Symphony in 1896.

This unforgettable evening is rooted in the past—its struggles, its stories, and the ways composers reflect on what came before. We begin with Brahms’ Tragic Overture—a storm of drama and complexity, full of weight and philosophical tension. From there, cellist Tae-Yeon Kim, winner of the Lutosławski Competition and not yet 20, brings lyrical fire to one of the cornerstones of the Cello Repertoire -  Dvořák’s Cello Concerto in B minor. Towering and intimate, this is Romanticism at its most human. The program closes with Amy Beach’s “Gaelic Symphony”—a groundbreaking work rich in lush harmonies and folk-inspired themes. Written as a response to Dvořák’s New World Symphony, Beach chose to honor her own roots, weaving the songs and spirit of Irish immigrants into a sweeping symphonic landscape filled with all that we love about the Romantic Period. It’s music that remembers, reimagines, and reclaims.

To parallel our celebrations of Symphony Hall’s 125th anniversary, frequent guest pianist Randall Hodgkinson joins the Chamber Players for a program featuring composers active at the time of the hall’s opening in 1900. Amy Beach and Charles Martin Loeffler were both prominent in Boston’s musical community at the turn of the last century. Charles Koechlin and Camille Saint-Saëns represent two generations of Parisian music, while Mahler (and his younger colleague Schoenberg) were both active in Vienna.

The program concludes in Michigan, with a piece commissioned and premiered in the state: Samuel Barber’s famous Summer Music.

JoAnna Farrer is the Concertmaster of the Savannah Philharmonic, and a member of the New Jersey Symphony. She has performed as a soloist with many ensembles, including the GoteborgsSymfoniker, the Philadelphia Orchestra, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, and the Israel Philharmonic. As a concertmaster, she has worked with conductors such as James Conlon, James DePreist, and Lorin Maazel, including performances of Britten’s “The Turn of the Screw” at the Kennedy Center with Maestro Maazel. In previous seasons, Farrer has served as guest concertmaster of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, and toured with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, and National Arts Centre Orchestra of Canada.

“The rich diversity of American society has fostered a vibrant tapestry of musical voices, each shaped by their own distinct backgrounds. Michael and I curated this program for violin and piano to celebrate that spirit of innovation and cultural exchange, highlighting works composed during the twentieth century. We begin with Fritz Kreisler’s Praeludium and Allegro, a lush reimagining of Baroque melody. Charles Ives follows with his inventive Violin Sonata no. 4, blending hymns, folk tunes, and bold harmonies to create a vibrantly eclectic soundscape of American life. The first half closes with Ernest Bloch’s Violin Sonata no. 2, Poème mystique, which shifts to a more introspective tone, offering profound emotional depth rooted in his Jewish heritage. The second half opens with John Adams’s Road Movies, a rhythmic portrayal of contemporary life, and continues with Amy Beach’s Romance for Violin and Piano, honoring one of America’s pioneering female composers. We conclude with Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess Suite, a brilliant fusion of classical and jazz traditions–a testament to the cultural mosaic of twentieth-century American music.”

Mary Bevan released her debut solo disc, Voyages, in 2017 (with pianist Joseph Middleton on the Signum label), which explores the music of eminent French composers and the settings they wrote for the poems of Charles Baudelaire. For this recital, Mary revisits her favourite repertoire from Voyages, including songs by Duparc, Fauré, Debussy, Chabrier, and more, but this time, each song is paired with another by a female composer writing around the same time. In this way, the recital seeks to bring the female composers from out of the shadow of their male counterparts and restore them to their rightful places as composers of equal quality and interest.

After two musical bicycle tours, the journey isn't over yet: The French chamber orchestra Les Forces Majeures hops from their bikes onto the stage and rounds off their visit to our region with a concert in Bietigheim. The musicians also continue the themes of travel and mobility dramaturgically, selecting suitable works by mostly French composers: With Poulenc, we travel by train and on foot; with Haydn, Debussy, and Ravel, we continue on a boat; Schumann whisks us away into the forest; and Josef Strauss dances a bicycle polka with us. Whether on foot, at sea, or on wheels: Les Forces Majeures are bustling and inspire a spirit of mobilization and departure—literally and figuratively.

Mendelssohn and Clara Schumann preceded Amy Beach, paving the way for the tonal worlds of the 20th Century Romantics (like Rachmaninoff and Beach). Sergei Rachmaninoff and Amy Beach were contemporaries, and I find that their music pairs together well. The Ceruti String Quartet - Marcin Arendt and Timothy Shiu, violins; Lenny Schranze, viola, and Kimberly Patterson, cello - has been a mainstay of the Memphis Chamber Music Society, the Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music, and the city of Memphis for decades. We are privileged to present them this season in collaboration with Memphis Symphony pianist Adrienne Claire Park. They will perform the luminous piano quintet by Amy Beach. Other surprises await, which means we are not yet certain which marvelous string quartet they will play. We feature the strings in a distinctive concert combining classical favorites with, diverse and eclectic dances and a moving autobiography. Amy Beach and William Grant Still highlight the range and joy of string composition while Shostakovich’s haunting Chamber Symphony shares a deep and personal story. Familiar favorites by Bach and Grieg dance and delight as familiar features to this special concert.

A founding member of the Grammy Award-winning Harlem Quartet, violinist Melissa White is recognized for her “warmly expressive and lyrical” playing (Chicago Classical Review). Her recital with pianist Pallavi Mahidhara highlights works by American women composers Amy Beach and Nokuthula Ngwenyama. Mahidhara explains, “We are performing works by composers who represent a diversity of backgrounds, much like the two of us.”

The Fischer Duo: American Sonatas

Immerse yourself in the rich tapestry of Gaelic culture with the York Symphony Orchestra's "Gaelic Celebration," a highlight of the 2024-25 Classical Series, John Williams Forever. This enchanting evening is set to take place at the prestigious Appell Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at 7:30 PM EST. Spanning approximately 2 hours, including an intermission, this concert promises to be an unforgettable journey through the musical landscapes of Ireland and Scotland.

The program features a meticulously curated selection of works that pay homage to Gaelic heritage. Experience the stirring blend of traditional Irish music and symphonic grandeur in John Williams' Suite from "Far and Away," and let the award-winning violinist Rachel Barton Pine captivate you with her rendition of Max Bruch’s "Scottish Fantasy," a piece that weaves together beloved Scottish folk tunes. The evening will also celebrate Amy Beach's "Gaelic Symphony," a pioneering composition that beautifully incorporates Irish folk songs into the romantic symphonic tradition.

Under the baton of the esteemed Conductor Lawrence Golan, known for his compelling interpretations and dynamic leadership, the York Symphony Orchestra will bring these masterpieces to life. Golan's expertise and passion for music promise to make this a deeply moving and memorable performance.

Before the concert, attendees are invited to a Pre-Concert Talk from 6:30-7:00 PM at the front of the Appell Center’s Strand Theatre stage. This insightful discussion, led by Assistant Conductor Rebekah O’Brien, is free for all ticket holders and offers an enlightening exploration of the evening's program.

For those unable to attend in person, digital access to the concert is available, allowing you to enjoy the performance from the comfort of your home. Digital tickets can be purchased through the Appell Center account, with a link provided via email for 48-hour access to the concert, from Sunday at noon to Tuesday at noon following the performance.

What kind of woman is she? The former professional tennis player Marie Jacquot seems to have been taking the stage by storm for several years. Since the 2023/24 season, the Frenchwoman has been principal guest conductor of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, and from the 2024/25 season she will also take on the role of chief conductor of the Royal Danish Theatre Copenhagen. And for the 2026/27 season she will become chief conductor of the WDR Symphony Orchestra. Here the hackneyed phrase becomes true: we will be hearing a lot more from her.
