Female composers, cultural identities, contemporary music: Junyan Chen's interests are as broad as her talent is impressive. At the 2024 Leeds International Piano Competition, she not only won second prize, but also the Chamber Music Prize and the Alexandra Dariescu Award – a talent worth keeping an eye on! At ProArte, the young artist will search for connections between times and places with a multifaceted program: works by François Couperin will be presented alongside Maurice Ravel's homage to his fellow Baroque composer. Ravel's famous "La valse" and works by Olivier Messiaen reveal further facets of French soundscapes for solo piano. And with Amy Beach's "Variations on Balkan Themes," a transatlantic cultural encounter joins the pattern of connecting lines.

Fortunately, her music is now enjoying a well-deserved revival. Although it has been said that Mozart did not particularly appreciate the flute, he nevertheless dedicated to it, in addition to a concerto in which he married it to the harp, a Quartet that does not fit into any box: imitating a theme by Paisiello in the first movement then obeying hilarious indications in a Rondeau noted as "gracefully animated, but not too fast, not too slow either, moreover, like this... like that... with a lot of fire and expression", the flute stands out for its caprices. Emmanuel Pahud delights in it, before defending pieces by the Lyonnais Ferroud and the American Amy Beach.

Eric Luebke is a fourth year music education student at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. As a singer, Eric has performed in the University Opera and in the community of Madison through solo and chamber performances with First United Methodist Church, Madison Youth Choirs, and Just Bach. Eric also plays piano, bass guitar, and percussion, and has worked at the UW–Madison Summer Music Clinic for three consecutive seasons. As a composer, Eric recently premiered his original work, “She Walks in Beauty,” featuring text by Lord Byron, with C8dence, a chamber ensemble at the university.

We begin with Brahms’ Tragic Overture—a storm of drama and complexity, full of weight and philosophical tension. From there, cellist Tae-Yeon Kim, winner of the Lutosławski Competition and not yet 20, brings lyrical fire to one of the cornerstones of the Cello Repertoire -  Dvořák’s Cello Concerto in B minor. Towering and intimate, this is Romanticism at its most human. The program closes with Amy Beach’s “Gaelic Symphony”—a groundbreaking work rich in lush harmonies and folk-inspired themes. To parallel our celebrations of Symphony Hall’s 125th anniversary, frequent guest pianist Randall Hodgkinson joins the Chamber Players for a program featuring composers active at the time of the hall’s opening in 1900. Amy Beach and Charles Martin Loeffler were both prominent in Boston’s musical community at the turn of the last century. Charles Koechlin and Camille Saint-Saëns represent two generations of Parisian music, while Mahler (and his younger colleague Schoenberg) were both active in Vienna.

Audiences will also have the rare opportunity to hear works by lesser-known composers such as Emmy Schäfer Klein and Leokadiya Kashperova. The ERSO Chamber Ensemble will be joined by a chamber arrangement of Wolfgang Amadus Mozart’s well-known Rondo in D major for piano and orchestra. Additional featured composers include Amy Beach, Florence Price, and Nadia Boulanger.

JoAnna Farrer is the Concertmaster of the Savannah Philharmonic, and a member of the New Jersey Symphony. She has performed as a soloist with many ensembles, including the GoteborgsSymfoniker, the Philadelphia Orchestra, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, and the Israel Philharmonic. As a concertmaster, she has worked with conductors such as James Conlon, James DePreist, and Lorin Maazel, including performances of Britten’s “The Turn of the Screw” at the Kennedy Center with Maestro Maazel. In previous seasons, Farrer has served as guest concertmaster of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, and toured with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, and National Arts Centre Orchestra of Canada.

Michael and I curated this program for violin and piano to celebrate that spirit of innovation and cultural exchange, highlighting works composed during the twentieth century. We begin with Fritz Kreisler’s Praeludium and Allegro, a lush reimagining of Baroque melody. Charles Ives follows with his inventive Violin Sonata no. 4, blending hymns, folk tunes, and bold harmonies to create a vibrantly eclectic soundscape of American life. The first half closes with Ernest Bloch’s Violin Sonata no. 2, Poème mystique, which shifts to a more introspective tone, offering profound emotional depth rooted in his Jewish heritage. The second half opens with John Adams’s Road Movies, a rhythmic portrayal of contemporary life, and continues with Amy Beach’s Romance for Violin and Piano, honoring one of America’s pioneering female composers. Mary Bevan released her debut solo disc, Voyages, in 2017 (with pianist Joseph Middleton on the Signum label), which explores the music of eminent French composers and the settings they wrote for the poems of Charles Baudelaire. For this recital, Mary revisits her favourite repertoire from Voyages, including songs by Duparc, Fauré, Debussy, Chabrier, and more, but this time, each song is paired with another by a female composer writing around the same time. In this way, the recital seeks to bring the female composers from out of the shadow of their male counterparts and restore them to their rightful places as composers of equal quality and interest.

After two musical bicycle tours, the journey isn't over yet: The French chamber orchestra Les Forces Majeures hops from their bikes onto the stage and rounds off their visit to our region with a concert in Bietigheim. The musicians also continue the themes of travel and mobility dramaturgically, selecting suitable works by mostly French composers: With Poulenc, we travel by train and on foot; with Haydn, Debussy, and Ravel, we continue on a boat; Schumann whisks us away into the forest; and Josef Strauss dances a bicycle polka with us. Whether on foot, at sea, or on wheels: Les Forces Majeures are bustling and inspire a spirit of mobilization and departure—literally and figuratively.

Karén Hakobyan conducts Pegasus: the Orchestra's SEASON FINALE in a monumental program that takes the listener through a Journey of American Music. He begins the evening with a World Premiere of a COMMISSION by a Living American Composer (to be announced). Next, the stunning Piano Concerto of Amy Beach is performed by celebrated pianist Asiya Korepanova. This rarely performed masterpiece was premiered by Boston Symphony with the composer (Amy Beach) herself at the piano in 1900.
