Still, for his concert, he has chosen the title, “No More Talk of Darkness,” which is the start of the ‘Phantom’ song, “All I Ask of You.” He has selected the title for a reason. “I’ve been ‘Phantom’ for over a decade,” he said some years ago. “It’s a very specific type of music and we’ll give them all the favorites, but this is a fun and uplifting show. We have a good time and we try to throw a Broadway singing party that’s a lot of fun. There are great vocals and my band is out-of-sight. We have a piano, bass and drum and three singers.”

Beethoven wrote just one opera, Fidelio (1805) but was dissatisfied with his first three attempts at the overture, the so-called “Leonore” overtures. The final version we hear on this program was written in 1814, and at just six minutes in length, is a tour de force of energetic lyricism that helps set the stage. For Elgar’s strikingly beautiful song cycle, Sea Pictures, we are joined by special guest artist, mezzo-soprano Daveda Karanas. Ms. Karanas has appeared throughout the United States, singing major roles with numerous renowned opera companies, including The Metropolitan Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, and San Francisco Opera. Similarly, she also maintains a busy international career and has appeared with The Israeli Opera, Oper Frankfurt, Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, and Teatro Real. Her acclaimed Carnegie Hall debut was in 2019 with the Athens Philharmonic in a performance of Mahler’s Second Symphony. The phantom is based on a real ghost story – a ballerina died, and her fiancé, a pianist, was disfigured. Legend has it he retreated to the underground of the Palais Garnier, and lived there until he died. Gaston LeRoux wrote L’Phantome de Opera, published in English as Phantom of the Opera, inspired by this legend and set in the actual Paris Opera House. The underground lake he wrote about is in reality an enormous cistern that does exist beneath the opera house, and which is still used for training firefighters to swim in the dark. This well-known and beloved musical finally closed on Broadway after 35 years on April 16, 2023. Join our students as they bring the phantom back to life on the Artscamp stage with Andrew Lloyd Webber’s lavish songs Masquerade, and Angel of Music.
