The orchestra of The Metropolitan Opera comes to Carnegie Hall in full dramatic force for its final concert of the season. The program opens with the stormy overture to Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman. The suite from Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande follows, featuring music from all five acts of the opera in just over 20 minutes, drawn largely from its gorgeous orchestral interludes. Metropolitan Opera stars Elīna Garanča and Christian Van Horn then join the orchestra in a complete concert performance of Bartók’s one-act expressionist opera Bluebeard’s Castle.

But it’s hard to imagine a better age for this epic fantasy than 2024. From Game of Thrones to Minecraft to The Lord of the Rings, our world is hungry for the stuff that came out of Wagner’s original binge-watch. This week, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra dips its toe into this vivid fantasy world with The Ring without Words, an instrumental suite drawn from Wagner’s gripping and evocative four-opera cycle.

With Die Walküre, Wagner leaves the realm of the gods and traces the story of the king of the gods Wotan’s mortal children and the warrior-maid Brünnhilde. The most well-loved opera of the tetralogy, it encompasses some of its most beautiful music: impassioned expressions of love, Wotan’s farewell to his beloved child Brünnhilde, the Magic Fire Music, and, of course, The Ride of the Valkyries, the rousing battle cry sung by eight Valkyrie sisters (memorably on the soundtrack of Apocalypse Now). Tonight, the “Prologue” of Wagner’s masterpiece The Ring of the Nibelung sets the mighty saga in motion and prepares you for what is to come: the conflict between love and power, and, ultimately, redemption through love. You’ll be plunged into the depths of the Rhine and hear the seductive siren song of the Rhine maidens; shudder at the curse placed on the possessor of all-power-giving ring of gold; fear for the folly of the gods as they traverse the rainbow bridge to enter their Valhalla palace — not knowing the doom that awaits them. The Ring Cycle, Wagner’s magnum opus, continues with Die Walküre, the second epic installment in the series. The daughters of Wotan, ruler of the gods, serve as Valkyries tasked with guiding the souls of fallen warriors to Valhalla. But as scandal erupts, Wotan finds himself at odds with whom he most trusts.

Die Walküre is the second of Wagner’s four-opera Ring cycle. The first act narrates the tale of a forbidden romance with Wagnerian grandeur and themes that call the cycle’s other operas and characters to mind. FWSO Music Director Robert Spano leads the orchestra and star vocalists in a special concert version of this act, preceded by Sibelius’ Symphony No. 6, which the composer poetically described as “cold spring water” and the “scent of first snow.”

Beethoven’s one and only Violin Concerto has become an audience and performer favorite, filled with delicate melodies and stunning poignance. This concert opens with a premiere by Los Angeles-based composer Sarah Gibson, which the League of American Orchestras commissioned with the generous support of the Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation.

Bringing dynamic duos into the present, the HSO has commissioned a double concerto by Grammy® Award nominated composer Clarice Assad for the husband-and-wife guitar and cello duo, Boyd Meets Girl, comprised of Rupert Boyd, guitar and West Hartford native, Laura Metcalf, cello.

Experience the legendary dramatic prowess of The Met Orchestra in the historic splendor of Carnegie Hall. In the first of three performances this season, Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the orchestra are joined by soprano Lise Davidsen, who debuted at the Met Opera in 2019 in the lead role of The Queen of Spades. The concert begins with Webern’s reimagining of J. S. Bach’s six-part fugue, followed by Wesendonck Lieder, which include some of Wagner’s most popular non-operatic songs. The second half of the concert comprises Gustav Mahler’s Fifth Symphony, a work close to Nézet-Séguin. “What is orchestral music? Here’s the example … it’s a symphony that has everything,” he recently told WRTI.

The Canadian-born pianist Tony Siqi Yun recently made his debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra performing Robert Schumann’s Piano Concerto under the baton of Yannick Nézet-Séguin. He first met Maestro Nézet-Séguin in the final round of the inaugural China International Music Competition in 2019, where he went on to win First Prize and a Gold Medal performing Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No 1. Other recent concerto performances have included the Cleveland Orchestra (Tchaikovsky), Toronto and Orchestre Métropolitain in Montreal (Clara Schumann) and the Orchestre de Chambre de Paris (Beethoven).

Wagnerites from around the world will descend upon Houston when HGO presents Parsifal, the composer’s final opera, full of shimmeringly beautiful music and spiritual and philosophical exploration. The revered masterpiece takes audiences on a mystical journey through a realm where time has no meaning and a group of knights are trying to protect the Holy Grail and their wounded king, Amfortas. He can only be healed by an innocent fool—the titular protagonist—but first Parsifal must undertake a quest to reclaim the Holy Spear, enduring tests including an attempted seduction by a bevy of gorgeous women. The opera will be presented in a stunning, sensual, colorful production from Tony Award-winning director John Caird. HGO Principal Guest Conductor Eun Sun Kim leads a cast of extraordinary Wagnerians including tenor Russell Thomas as Parsifal, soprano Christine Goerke as Kundry, bass Kwangchul Youn as Gurnemanz, and bass-baritone Ryan McKinny as Amfortas.

Richard Wagner composed his Siegfried Idyll as a birthday present for his wife, Cosima, following the birth of their son Siegfried. The dazzling violinist Bella Hristova joins The Phoenix Symphony to play a violin concerto that her husband, composer David Ludwig, wrote especially for her as a wedding present. Music Director Tito Muñoz ends the program with Tchaikovsky’s passionate Symphony No. 6, “Pathétique”, an epic tale about the power of fate in life and death which premiered just nine days before the 53-year-old composer’s untimely death.

Soprano Elza van den Heever is the pure and virtuous princess Elisabeth, alongside mezzo-soprano Ekaterina Gubanova as the tempting goddess of love, Venus. Maestro Donald Runnicles takes the podium for Otto Schenk’s classic production, which also features baritone Christian Gerhaher in his Met debut as Tannhäuser’s companion knight Wolfram and bass Georg Zeppenfeld as Landgraf Hermann.

Also premiering is Peter Knell’s orchestral synthesis of ARKHIPOV, his gripping two-act opera depicting a Soviet submarine run amok. Among its musical arsenal, Arkhipov Synthesis uses a key technique invented by Schoenberg. Additionally, Tomas Peire Serrate's Awake reconsiders Schoenberg’s famous “Pierrot ensemble” with a fresh approach.

Richard Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll, composed as a birthday present for his wife, sets the stage for a hero’s woodland journey that concludes with Franz Josef Haydn’s stately Symphony No. 77 in this Express Concert led by SPCO musicians. Along the way, Jörg Widmann’s string quartet The Hunt offers vivid dark humor in contrast to Mabel Daniels’ lush orchestral tone poem Deep Forest which captures the eerie stillness and beauty of nature.

Every Carnegie Hall debut is a notable event, and recitals in the intimate Weill Recital Hall can be especially powerful for artist and audience alike. Superheroes: John Williams meets Richad Strauss

The winners of the 2021 Fischoff Competition and the 2022 Concert Artists Guild Competition showcase the versatility of the cello quartet with music of different periods and contrasting styles and characters. From Vivaldi to Piazolla, the first half of the program journeys through works written for chamber orchestras, operas and virtuosic showpieces, redesigned for the cello quartet. As a unique ensemble that does not have the standardized repertoire of string quartets, the ensemble presents a rare opportunity to create and commission new works by composers of varying backgrounds, in this case Zhou Tian. The Andean Walkabout by Gabriela Lena Frank is the crux of the second half. Leyendas, with its American, Chinese and South American influences, encompasses many of the backgrounds and ideals of the quartet’s members.

Wotan's union with Erda produced nine daughters, the Valkyries, who would assist war heroes in battle and escort the fallen to Valhalla to eternal bliss. Among them, Wotan's favorite child is Brünnhilde. But the gods are in danger from Alberich, who is waiting for the recovery of the power-giving ring. To accomplish his revenge on Wotan, he fathered an unborn son, which is why the father of the gods himself has to strive with all his might to regain the ring that he had to give to the giants for the construction of the gods' castle.

In this unique special, Rick Steves – America's leading authority on European travel – plays musical tour guide and utilizes his extensive knowledge of European history and culture to help set the context for each piece. The Milwaukee Shepherd Express conjectured that he “well may be the best violinist in the world. [His] gorgeous sound is ample and rich always. Every detail is played with perfectly clear intent.” Augustin Hadelich’s astonishing technique, eloquent phrasing, and seeming effortlessness inspired Donnacha Dennehy to compose his first multi-movement concerto especially for him. In Dennehy's words, “The first movement especially zooms in and out of various perspectives. I think of this aerial zooming as being essential to its nature. The second movement feels redolent of the sea to me. The sea always emerges in my music it seems. Maybe it has to do with growing up in Ireland, surrounded by water on all sides. There is a real feeling of yearning to this movement. It was written during the first lockdown of the pandemic, and I feel that a kind of desire to transcend the conditions of everyday life permeates this movement. The final movement is more earthy and cheeky. A strange, splintered, fierce jig eventually appears, and then abstractions of that start to eat away at the very fabric of the music, when the violin threatens to spiral everything out of control leading to a fierce conclusion on the very edge of what is possible!

Franz Liszt, one of the great piano virtuosos of his time was also a prolific arranger of orchestral and operatic music to further show off the prowess of his instrument. In this case he takes Wagner’s “Liebestod” and reworks it brilliantly for his instrument, showing that the piano can sound like any instrument – even the human voice! Incidentally, when the young prodigy, Clara Schumann, whose music is also featured on this program, played for Liszt, he was awestruck by her pianistic abilities. The program ends with Robert Schumann’s Piano Quintet, one of his most orchestral-sounding works of chamber music

Music Director Nathalie Stutzmann closes the season with a feast of favorites, showcasing the depth of artistry within the ranks of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. She opens the evening with the rapturous Overture to Tannhäuser by Richard Wagner and then offers up two works by her fellow countryman Maurice Ravel: his tender homage to friends lost in the perils of World War I, Le tombeau de Couperin, and his sultry orchestral slow-burn Boléro. French pianist Lise de la Salle joins the Orchestra for Beethoven’s heroic Piano Concerto No. 3.

The transcendent cellist Yo-Yo Ma performs Elgar’s achingly beautiful concerto, one of the most well-known and revered of cello concertos, in this one-night-only performance. Written near the end of WWI, Elgar’s valedictory work is a searing response at once both tender and pained. Rafael Payare leads the Orchestra in Tchaikovsky’s passionate 5th Symphony, an emotion-filled journey rife with brilliant melody.

Desire for a coveted ring begins a mammoth adventure to Valhalla. Gods, dwarves, giants, river nymphs, and dragons scheme and dream of power in Das Rheingold, the influential masterpiece by Richard Wagner that echoes in our popular culture today. 

The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra welcomes guest conductor Nicholas Carter for music inspired by the lust for adventure. Lera Auerbach's Icarus evokes the mythic traveler whose waxen wings lift him to the heavens. The noble music of Wagner's Götterdämmerung follows the hero Siegfried down the Rhine, and Vaughan Williams' roiling Sea Symphony pays tribute to the countless souls who have set sail, only to be swallowed by the deep. It's an evening of evocative tone painting, cast in technicolor by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra.

Four pieces of orchestral artwork are showcased in this intensely expressionistic program led by acclaimed conductor and regular Minnesota Orchestra guest Carlos Miguel Prieto. The Ring of Fire and Love evokes an “earth-shattering, creative and cataclysmic moment,” as described by composer Outi Tarkiainen. Richard Wagner’s Wesendonck Lieder is a set of five musical love letters, sung here by soprano Emily Magee, followed by Joaquin Turina’s colorful and passionate Danzas Fantásticas. The Orchestra then creates a kaleidoscope of swirling sound in Claude Debussy’s classic portrait of the sea.

Wagner’s soaring masterpiece makes its triumphant return to the Met stage after 17 years. In a sequel to his revelatory production of Parsifal, director François Girard unveils an atmospheric staging that once again weds his striking visual style and keen dramatic insight to Wagner’s breathtaking music, with Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin on the podium to conduct a supreme cast led by tenor Piotr Beczała in the title role of the mysterious swan knight. Sopranos Tamara Wilson and Elena Stikhina, as the virtuous duchess Elsa, falsely accused of murder, go head-to-head with soprano Christine Goerke as the cunning sorceress Ortrud, who seeks to lay her low. Bass-baritone Evgeny Nikitin is Ortrud’s power-hungry husband, Telramund, and bass Günther Groissböck is King Heinrich.

Andris Nelsons and the BSO’s continuing tradition of performing opera in concert brings us excerpts from Richard Wagner’s early opera Tannhäuser, which had its premiere in Dresden in 1845. A German minstrel-knight, Tannhäuser (tenor Klaus Florian Vogt), struggles to reject the world’s sensual pleasures, represented by the "Venusburg Music" of the opera’s Act I. He is redeemed by the pure love of Elisabeth, sung by Amber Wagner, and with the help of the wise minstrel Wolfram, sung by Christian Gerhaher.

For the first time, Gustavo Dudamel conducts the return of this remarkable production of Wagner’s Tristan and Isolde, directed by Peter Sellars with video by Bill Viola, one of America’s leading visual artists. When the Tristan Project was first performed in 2004, The New York Times hailed it as “a multimedia conception that promised to be so ingenious that listeners traveled long distances to catch it and talked about it for months.” Matching Wagner’s 19th-century desire to expand what opera could be with 21st-century innovation, Viola’s and Sellars’ staging explores the psychological, spiritual, and elemental subtext of the story. This rare opportunity to see the Tristan Project features a globally celebrated cast, headlined by Michael Weinius and Miina-Liisa Värelä.

Our three-year exploration of Richard Wagner’s operatic masterpiece continues with Act II. At once tender and tragic, this deeply personal love story changed the course of classical music, drama, and opera forever…and has only ever been performed in Oregon once, some 50 years ago. Prior to the complete Act II, we’ll hear French composer Lili Boulanger’s shimmering miniature about springtime, and Francesco will set the stage with a captivating examination of what makes Wagner’s music so moving.

It begins softly. A single snare drum. Then, a flute. Gradually, each instrument of Pacific Symphony joins in, one after the other, until Ravel’s Boléro reaches one of the greatest climaxes in all of music. Also, Orli Shaham, Dennis Kim and Warren Hagerty perform Beethoven’s too-rarely encountered tour-de-force, the Triple Concerto.  Carl St.Clair begins the season with Wagner’s stormy overture to The Flying Dutchman, and Re(new)al, a new work by the brilliant young composer, Viet Cuong.
