The Desire of the Astronaut explores the enduring myth and popular iconography of the astronaut through the fictional story of Esteban Only, the last Boricua in space. Drifting on a dying spacecraft with only intermittent contact with Earth, Esteban undertakes repairs that may facilitate his rescue or accelerate his court martial on grounds of insubordination.

Puerto Rican Traveling Theater (PRTT)

THE RED ROSE pays tribute to Afro/Black Puerto Rican writer and activist Jesús Colón. Arriving in New York City as a stowaway youth in the winter of 1917, Colón went on to become a popular chronicler of the Puerto Rican migrant experience and one of its enduring icons. The production narrates his fateful meeting with undercover FBI agent Mildred Blauvelt, and their subsequent face-off before the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) in 1959.

The legacy of the Bronx fires is a sticky one and forever tied to histories of popular resistance and uplift. Pulsing to the beat of salsa, funk disco, and hip hop, Pregones/PRTT’s TORCHED! alternates from 1970’s New York —when news of the fires dominated headlines— to present day survival and rebuilding. Part investigative theater and part poetic fiction, the production brings forward true stories of those who lived through the devastation to lay bare the infamies of the arson-for-profit business.

The story: 30-something Danny visits the local kids’ playground —super cute baby in tow— and engages in hilarious banter and park bench philosophizing with another parent. The conversation is peppered by wild asides with Daniel’s superlative and musical alter egos, MC Plátano and the Beatboxer.

Pregones/Puerto Rican Traveling Theater’s 2022-23 Mainstage Season kicks off with a new staging of Harlem Hellfighters on a Latin Beat, a rousing Latinx musical play developed under the leadership of award-winning director and dramaturg Rosalba Rolón and composer Desmar Guevara. It is the story of extraordinary valor and musicianship that made the 369th Infantry of the New York Army National Guard the most celebrated regiment of the World War One era. As the U.S. prepares to enter armed struggle, genius bandleader and conductor James Reese Europe assembles an all-Black regimental band of unprecedent high caliber. Now firmly established as a point of pride in African American history, it is less known that Lieut. Europe recruited 17 of his illustrious musician-soldiers in Puerto Rico, among them the great Rafael Hernández and Rafael Duchesne.

Harlem Hellfighters on a Latin Beat

The beautiful land i seek (la linda tierra que busco yo) In 1950, two determined Puerto Rican revolutionaries on a train from New York to Washington, D.C. discuss their plan to strike in the name of Puerto Rican independence. However, the lock to their compartment is broken, and each time the door swings open, they are interrupted by figures from art and history—visions that reflect what their homeland means to them and its complex relationship with the United States. As the borders of their reality blur and the train continues its journey, the two must finalize their course of action and decide how they want their sacrifice to be remembered.
