His exploration of the human condition continues to provide inspiration for artists, writers, dancers, filmmakers, and composers. This concert will also feel different, with guest actors from the UofU Actor Training Program and SLC’s own Utopia Early Music providing context for the evening of orchestral music inspired by Shakespeare. London Phoenix Orchestra present a programme of English music to open their 2024/25 season. The centrepiece is Elgar’s majestic Symphony No. 1, of which the composer wrote “There is no program beyond a wide experience of human life with a great charity (love) and a massive hope in the future”. Brilliant young cellist Ben Tarlton joins the orchestra for Walton’s magical Cello Concerto. Ethel Smyth’s stirring overture to her most famous opera, The Wreckers.

“Within Her Arms is music for my mother, with all my love”. Scored for 15 strings, Anna Clyne’s deeply felt meditation on loss opens the concert. BBC Young Musician String Final winner Jaren Ziegler performs Walton’s turbulent Viola Concerto. Premiered by Paul Hindemith alongside the composer himself, the Concerto was met with great enthusiasm which brought Walton to the forefront of British classical music. Following the interval, promising young conductor Stone Tung leads the Albion Orchestra through Richard Strauss’ Ein Heldenleben. First performed in 1899, the work takes the listener through the journey of a hero’s life, who appears to be Strauss himself.

It is not unusual for composers to arrange their own chamber music works for larger ensembles. However, the character of the piece often changes fundamentally: William Walton's Sonata for String Orchestra - an arrangement of his String Quartet in A minor - is actually a concerto for string quartet and orchestra, according to the composer Christopher Palmer. Walton does not simply transfer the quartet to the larger ensemble, but plays with the alternation between solo passages reminiscent of the original ensemble and the full tutti sound.

The second concert in our ‘Music for a Great City’ series begins with Britten’s energetic Purcell-inspired Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra, originally written for the London Symphony Orchestra, followed Copland’s Music for a Great City from which our series takes its name, an evocative homage to the vibrant pulse of urban life. The Te Deum by Stephen Dodgson, whose centenary we celebrate this year, interweaves the personal texts of Mary Tudor martyrs with the traditional ‘Te Deum’ text, in a work that is unsettled but ultimately inspires us with the beauty of calm, steadfast faith and internal strength in troubled times – only too relevant today. The concert concludes with Walton’s Belshazzar’s Feast, a dramatically ebullient choral tour de force portraying the biblical story of the fall of Babylon.

This is exactly what Edward Elgar did as he honored the important people in his life in each of the 14 variations of his Enigma theme. Hailed as “exceptional” and “mesmerizing” by the Star Tribune, violinist Augustin Hadelich returns to Orchestra Hall to play Benjamin Britten’s Violin Concerto. The concerts include Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s Idyll, continuing the Orchestra’s championing of music recorded for its Listening Project initiative.

This special event celebrates the rich contributions of 18th-21st century British composers to choral symphonic music, featuring an exhilarating program that includes the U.S. premiere of Roxanna Panufnik’s Coronation Sanctus and culminates in the mesmerizing Belshazzar’s Feast by William Walton.

Under the baton of musical titan Marin Alsop, the Choral Arts Chorus and Orchestra will unite to deliver a performance filled with lyrical sounds and majestic fanfare. The program also highlights works by George Frideric Handel, Benjamin Britten, and William Walton, promising an evening of spectacular revelry.

Featured artists include Marin Alsop as conductor, Anthony Blake Clark as conductor and chorus master, the Symphonic Chorus, the Choral Arts Orchestra, and Ryan McKinny, bass-baritone. The performance will last approximately 90 minutes, including a 15-minute intermission.

Edwin Outwater and the SFCM Orchestra kick off the season with a multigenerational and eclectic program of music inspired by dance, pleasure gardens, viola virtuosity and the pressures of graduating. Masquerade evokes the experience of London’s pleasure gardens and the music of English country dance and song. Isabel Tannenbaum won the school’s concerto competition by channeling the virtuosity required in Walton’s Viola Concerto. Glinka’s Kamarinskaya was the first orchestral work to be based on Russian folk songs, and Shostakovich wrote his first symphony to graduate, at the age of 19, only for the piece to make him an international teenage star.

Two great names in classical music come together to host the biggest musical party of the year. Cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason and soprano Lise Davidsen join conductor Marin Alsop and the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus for an evening of opera arias, songs, spirituals, choral anthems and world premieres, as well as all the traditional favourites by Arne, Elgar and Parry.

For our annual free concert, guitarist Roberto Capocchi gives a solo recital featuring spirited works by four leading 20th-century composers, including the Homenaje a Tárrega by Joaquín Turina, which honors the iconic, late-Romantic Spanish guitarist and composer Francisco Tárrega, and the only original work for solo guitar by the legendary Argentine composer Alberto Ginastera: the Sonata, Op. 47.

After an ‘extraordinary’ Proms debut last season, rising-star conductor Klaus Mäkelä is reunited with sensational pianist Yuja Wang for Rachmaninov’s glittering Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini – its mercurial moods and technical demands a tour de force for any soloist. American baritone Thomas Hampson joins forces with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus for Walton’s biblical blockbuster Belshazzar’s Feast – a choral symphony with an epic impact. Orchestral colour is also on display in Jimmy López Bellido’s Perú negro – a vibrant homage to the songs, dances and traditions of Afro-Peruvian music.

Prom 27: Yuja Wang plays Rachmaninov

The BBC Philharmonic and Chief Conductor John Storgårds present Sibelius’s Symphony No. 1 – a thrilling glimpse of a composer emerging from the shadow of Tchaikovsky and his fellow Romantics. Canadian violinist James Ehnes is the soloist in Walton’s fiercely direct Violin Concerto – a work full of song, dance and drama. The concert opens with a world premiere from heartily irreverent Irish composer Gerald Barry, focusing on Franz Kafka’s obsession with wearing earplugs to silence the noise around him. ‘In the music,’ Barry says, ‘you are Kafka, hearing the world’s sounds as he heard them. You are inside his head.’

Prom 26: Sibelius’s First Symphony

The BBC Philharmonic and its Chief Conductor John Storgårds are joined today by Canadian violinist James Ehnes, who brings his virtuosity to William Walton’s Violin Concerto. Walton worked on the concerto in 1938 during a trip to Ravello, southern Italy, where he was bitten by a tarantula. He marked the unpleasant incident by incorporating a ‘tarantella’ (an Italian folk dance style) into the concerto, describing the results as "quite gaga, I may say, and of doubtful propriety.”

From William Walton’s unforgettably majestic Belshazzar’s Feast to the brilliant pianist Jeremy Denk exploring Brahms second piano concerto, this concert promises unforgettable melodies rendered with exquisite care and precision. The concerto, a notable technical challenge for pianists, showcases Brahms’ sharp intellectual prowess and with deep, often tumultuous emotional changes. Belshazzar’s Feast is an oratorio with The Phoenix Symphony with Chorus and Baritone soloist combining for a grand musical spectacle. Based on the Old Testament story concerning the lavish feast thrown by the Babylonian king, Belshazzar.

Eleanor David is a sophomore BXA Engineering and Arts student at Carnegie Mellon University. In addition to her primary major in Chemical Engineering, she is also working on an additional major in Viola Performance, where she is studying with Professor David Harding. At the Carnegie Mellon School of Music, she's most enjoyed working with faculty on motion and feeling in music, as well as playing in chamber ensembles and reading new music.

The Orchestre Métropolitain is presenting a symphonic adaptation of the story Le pelleteur de nuages (The Cloud Shoveller) by Simon Boulerice. This poetic and magical tale is about a young, imaginative boy named Elliot with vitiligo. Published by La courte échelle in 2018, the story tackles themes of difference, diversity, stigma, inclusivity and self-esteem.

Sinfonia da Camera presents an evening of evocative musical imagery inspired by English painters, poets, and playwrights! A depiction of Thomas Rowlandson's painting of the same name, Walton's Portsmouth Point Overture portrays the seaside bustle of the busy port town in southern England as ships prepare for departure. The title of Frank Bridge's There is a Willow Grows Aslant a Brook is drawn from Shakespeare's Hamlet in which Queen Gertrude describes the tragic circumstances in which the drowned Ophelia was discovered. The first half concludes with arguably Coates' most well-known work, London Everyday Suite, depicting London's Convent Garden, Westminster, and Knightsbridge areas. Following intermission, as part of a continuing collaboration with Lyric Theatre @ Illinois, the evening continues with a lightly-staged production of Gilbert & Sullivan's Trial by Jury. A comic opera depicting a "breach of marriage" trial, this farcical production ultimately concludes in an unexpected new marriage and "joy unbounded!"

The program for the evening includes a rich selection of classical music, starting with Richard Strauss's "Der Rosenkavalier TrV 227, op. 59 Walzerfolge No. 2," followed by William Walton's "Concerto for viola and orchestra." After an interval, the concert will conclude with Béla Bartók's "Concerto for Orchestra, Sz 116." These pieces showcase the versatility and depth of the viola, brought to life under the skilled hands of Tabea Zimmermann, the BRSO’s artist-in-residence for the season. Zimmermann will present a series of special concertos for the viola, including the rarely heard Walton Viola Concerto, a challenging piece that promises to highlight her exceptional talent. Iván Fischer, a seasoned Bartók specialist, will conduct the orchestra, ensuring an evening of captivating musical excellence.

This season's highlight is the performance of William Walton's Viola Concerto, a piece composed in 1928-29 and initially intended for Lionel Tertis. However, due to its demanding nature, the premiere was performed by Paul Hindemith. This concert offers a unique opportunity to experience one of the supreme violists of our time, Tabea Zimmermann, as she interprets this complex composition, providing an exciting contrast to Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra.
