This seminal opera was premiered in April 1826 at Covent Garden Theatre with Weber conducting. Weeks later the composer died of tuberculosis, at the age of just 39, leaving an operatic legacy – Der Freischütz, Euryanthe, and finally Oberon – that shaped the future of German Romantic opera.

Oberon is a work of magic and chivalry: enchanted horns, glittering fairy choruses, ocean storms and ardent love duets combining in a narrative that leaps from Bordeaux to Baghdad. Encompassing this fanciful plot is a score of radiant beauty: presaging Wagner and his leitmotif whilst drawing on wide-ranging traditions – the German Singspiel of Mozart, the English semi-opera of Purcell, and Weber’s longstanding interest in the music of non-Western cultures.

With a distinguished cast, newly-commissioned narration, and dramatic concert staging, the Monteverdi Choir and Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique will illuminate anew this English-language cornerstone of Romantic opera, two centuries after its London premiere.

In a village community that holds firm to archaic customs, the young hunter Max must pass a marksmanship test so he may marry his sweetheart, Agathe. Of all times now when his shooting has been very much below par! Carl Maria von Weber and his librettist Friedrich Kind fluctuate between ghost story, fairy tale, fortune play and interplay between heaven and hell. The plot centres around a diabolical ritual in the “Wolf's Glen”, where a pact is made with Samiel to cast magic bullets that never miss their target. Its composer declared that the opera was celebrated by its world premiere audience in Berlin in 1821 with the, “most incredible enthusiasm”. In the decades that followed, the piece, at the time considered nature-oriented and traditional-romantic, swiftly became one of the most performed operas on German stages. And little wonder it was: In an age with a popular yearning for cultural, national identification opportunities, Der Freischütz offered a projection surface for an ideal community. So what about this opera appeals to director Dmitri Tcherniakov today?

Not only is he a celebrated clarinetist, but also perhaps the most performed living German composer. His "Con brio" is a captivating concert overture that captivates from the first second. Attention Dvořák fans: After the Fifth Symphony in the fifth symphony concert, here follows his Seventh – perhaps the most serious, but possibly also the most deeply moving, by the Bohemian musician, who over time conquered Europe and the USA. But those who focus only on this classic can easily overlook the others in this concert. Annabel Hauk, born in Frankfurt am Main in 1999, plays cello in Robert Schumann's A minor Concerto, which offers the solo instrument a pleasing amount of scope for elegiac expression and, as one of the first works from his Düsseldorf period, still exudes a great deal of joie de vivre. It is only fitting that chief conductor Nicholas Milton opens the morning with Weber's Freischütz Overture, as it is equally rich in color.

Emanuel Blumin-Sint is a rising star in the classical music world. The 20-year-old bassoonist has already given solo performances at New York's Carnegie Hall and the Elbphilharmonie. He has collaborated with Sir Simon Rattle and won more than a dozen first prizes in competitions. In 2024, he was awarded the Fanny Mendelssohn Förderpreis, which enabled him to create his debut album, "Leading Bassoon." This record clearly shows that Emanuel Blumin-Sint is on a mission. He wants to bring the bassoon to create a new image, bringing the sonic diversity offered by his instrument closer to the audience. In this "Classics on Sunday – Extra," he plays three of his most beautiful declarations of love for his instrument. Mozart's Bassoon Concerto is a poetic reverie tailor-made for the warm, singing tone of the bassoon. And Rossini beautifully combines the bassoon's soft tone with lightness and Italian flair.

This concert program features three masterpieces that impressively reflect the diversity of the Romantic era. The program opens with Carl Maria von Weber's Symphony No. 1, which combines both vitality and melodic beauty. Richard Strauss's symphonic poem "Don Juan" transports the audience into a passionate world of heroic myth. The concert concludes with Antonín Dvořák's Symphony No. 7, an emotionally intense work that impressively reflects the expressive power of the Romantic era. Sebastian Weigle, General Music Director of the Frankfurt Opera from 2008 to 2023, leads the Graz Philharmonic through this fascinating program.

"Man only plays when he is in the full sense of the word a human being, and he is only fully a human being when he plays." These famous words come from Friedrich Schiller, and the program under the direction of our honorary conductor Christoph Eschenbach inspires us to many musical flourishes – with our wind players repeatedly shining through with their playful spirit. And the instrumental pieces hit the mark perfectly, for example in the overture from Weber's opera "Der Freischütz" from 1821: Here, bullets cursed by demonic powers decide the love life of a young hunter in a competition – but "the whole thing ends joyfully," as the composer noted. Afterwards, together with our solo horn player Andreas Kreuzhuber, we perform a fascinating concerto by Reinhold Glière: Although this virtuoso piece was composed in 1950, it is entirely imbued with a romantic spirit.

In the 18th century, Central European composers such as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart invented sounds intended to evoke associations with "Turkish music"—for example, in his opera The Abduction from the Seraglio , which premieres at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in June 2026. In addition to Mozart's Prague Symphony , Tim Fluch will also conduct the orchestral work "Effaced Figures" by Istanbul-born Ege Gür, who was awarded the European Composition Prize in Berlin in 2024 and whose works combine influences of 20th-century music with the traditions of classical Turkish music. Carl Maria von Weber's Clarinet Concerto No. 2 is also on the program.

With our "Artist in Residence," Alexander Krichel, we perform one of the greatest piano works of all time: Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat major. The way Beethoven allows soloist and orchestra to interact, the way he lets one lead at times, the other at times, the way the piano and orchestra meld together, and the way he creates dream worlds with distant keys, is the work of a genius. No wonder Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 was a revelation for Robert Schumann, Brahms, Chopin, Liszt, Tchaikovsky, and Rachmaninoff.

In eighth grade, seeking more excitement in his classical journey, he chose to switch to an objectively richer and more beautiful instrument: the viola. He has loved it ever since. After learning from a violin teacher throughout high school, it was not until college that he first began playing proper viola repertoire. This recital is the culmination of all that he has learned.

Raphael Attila Vogl demonstrates the diverse sounds of the organ in a program that brings works from Bach to Bruckner to life through impressive transcriptions. The opening piece is Carl Maria von Weber's Overture to "Der Freischütz," which surprises with dramatic contrasts and a romantic sound ideal - in the version for organ, it unfolds with an almost orchestral force. Johann Sebastian Bach's Third Brandenburg Concerto in G major, originally intended for strings, becomes a virtuosic challenge in the organ transcription, emphasizing the clarity and brilliance of the Baroque period. With an excerpt from Max Reger's String Quartet in E-flat major, Vogl adds a chamber music touch that preserves the sonic intimacy of the original while exploring the vastness of the instrument. Dvořák’s goal for his Symphony No. 7, here conducted by Andrés Orozco-Estrada, was to surpass all of his previous efforts. Grand, gloomy, and dramatic, it contains few of the Slavic folk–derived, nationalistic elements associated with the composer. The influence of Brahms—particularly his recent Third Symphony, which impressed Dvořák as the finest symphony ever written—permeates the four movements. Mozart’s exuberant and expressive Piano Concerto No. 9 represented a great leap forward in ambition and achievement alike. The young Canadian soloist Jan Lisiecki interprets what legendary pianist Alfred Brendel called “one of the greatest wonders of the world.”

He was the legendary seducer—and ultimately ended up in hell: Don Giovanni in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's version, Don Juan in the ancient Spanish legend, and in Nikolaus Lenau's work, which inspired Richard Strauss's tone poem . Both works offer a captivating auditory experience, as does Henze's overture to a theater. Carl Maria von Weber's favorite instrument was the clarinet, perhaps also because he was commissioned by the Bavarian King Maximilian I to write his Concerto No. 1. While widely performed internationally, it remains (for now?) a hidden gem in Vienna.

This introspective masterpiece, where the orchestra becomes an equal partner in the musical drama, deeply influenced Beethoven’s own work. That's what you call fate: While the bassoon is featured prominently as a soloist in many symphonies and operas, explicit solo concertos for this particularly dark woodwind instrument are rare. Carl Maria von Weber, the composer of the rather dark opera "Der Freischütz," wrote a bassoon concerto in 1811: an ideal playing field for the French bassoonist Marceau Lefèvre. The Italian conductor and pianist Vanessa Benelli Mosell frames Weber's rarely heard gem with timeless works: Wagner's Ringfarbige Musik der Freude über seinen neuen Sohn Siegfried (Ring-colored Music of Joy over His Newborn Son Siegfried), and Schubert's arguably best-known and unfinished symphony, whose two movements are among the finest of the entire 19th century.

Sometimes gently swaying, sometimes wildly stomping – this is how the successive waltzes in Carl Maria von Weber's "Invitation to the Dance" sound. With this piece, originally composed for piano, Weber created a depiction of the intoxicating love of dance of his time in 1819. The Spanish composer Manuel de Falla – the music world will celebrate his 150th birthday in 2026 – was so fascinated by a performance of the "Ballets Russes" in Paris that he wanted to create music for a ballet himself. Inspired by the dancer Pastore Imperio from his homeland, de Falla studied the tradition of Andalusian flamenco and the singing style of "cante jondo" and, on this basis, wrote the ballet "El amor brujo" (The Love Spell) for voice and orchestra in the winter of 1914/15, from which he transformed a year later into a symphonic suite with voice. The solo part is played by Ieva Prudnikovaite, who is currently delighting audiences as Carmen at the Lübeck Theater.

An evening that invokes the spirit of Romanticism: the overture to »Der Freischütz« introduces a key work from the era, whose magic spell was cast early in the Dresden career of Carl Maria von Weber. Robert Schumann’s Piano Concerto in A minor combines poetic expression with formal clarity. First performed in Dresden in December 1845, the work sees the piano and orchestra enter into a lively dialogue. The programme concludes with Mendelssohn’s »Scottish« symphony, an atmospheric piece permeated by a sense of vastness, melancholy and hymn-like power. Drawing inspiration from a visit to Edinburgh’s Holyrood Palace in 1829, the young composer did not complete the symphony until twelve years later.

The "Freischütz Overture" had already established itself quite early on. Independent of the opera to which it actually belongs, it enjoyed a remarkable career in the concert halls. Carl Maria von Weber incorporates the central elements of the opera's plot in it. The forest atmosphere, the Wolf's Glen, and Agathe's love aria characterize the overture, which anticipates the opera's happy ending in radiant C major.

Spohr, Weber, Schubert, and Haydn—four titans of Classical-Romantic music history! Undoubtedly, they were pioneers in their respective musical paths, intuitively grasping the trends of their time and laying the foundations for future generations of composers. One thing is certain, however: without the others, they would probably not have existed, nor would they have achieved the virtuoso brilliance for which they are still celebrated today. A mutual influence was clearly present and contributed to the development of the musical landscape of their time. One example of this interaction is the connection between Franz Schubert and Carl Maria von Weber. Although they took different musical paths, as contemporaries they shared a common era of transition from Viennese Classicism to Romanticism. Schubert, inspired by Weber's operas, incorporated some of his ideas into his songs and music-dramatic works, thus coming closer to the Romantic ideal of musical expression.

Riccardo Minasi—familiar to Hamburg residents through his long-standing collaboration with Ensemble Resonanz—and Beatrice Rana make their debuts with the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen with this program. Both are known for their dedicated and electrifying music-making, making them a perfect fit for the Bremen orchestra, which regularly captivates audiences at the Elbphilharmonie and around the world with its intense concerts.

Scheherazade, based on the Middle Eastern folktales, One Thousand and One Nights, showcases Rimsky-Korsakov’s mastery as an orchestrator and storyteller. Waves of sound feature many instrumental solos with a prominent role throughout for the solo violin. Our very own talented Concertmaster, Scott Moore, will be featured in this performance. The German-Jewish composer Paul Hindemith was newly settled in New York in 1951 when he transformed his sketches of a ballet based on themes by Carl Maria von Weber into his “American Symphony”.

Kick off the new season in style! Superstar mezzo-soprano and 2025/26 CSO Artist-in-Residence Joyce DiDonato joins Nikolaj Szeps-Znaider and the CSO for a celebratory program of vocal pieces by Richard Strauss and Georges Bizet, stirring overtures by Weber and Wagner and selections from Mendelssohn’s enchanting A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Walk the red carpet and toast to the start of another incredible season.

Visible from afar, the imposing Elbphilharmonie building towers over Hamburg's Hafencity as the metropolis's new landmark and one of the world's most exciting concert venues. The Duisburg Philharmonic's invitation to make its debut there in September is also a sign of the esteem in which this traditional orchestra is held far beyond the borders of its home city - a philharmonic accolade, so to speak. And for this special occasion, conductor Stefan Blunier has put together a program that revels in the most beautiful Romantic tones: Among the most popular operas of all time is "Der Freischütz", for whose overture Carl Maria von Weber anticipated the greatest hits of his Romantic opera. Full of catchy melodies, the yearning and melancholy First Violin Concerto by Max Bruch, played by Diana Tishchenko, a well-known singer to Duisburg audiences, follows . And finally, Antonín Dvořák's Eighth Symphony, a work overflowing with musical ideas. The "melodies just fly to me," the composer wrote of this cheerful and life-affirming work, for which he borrowed some themes from Bohemian folk music. The exuberant orchestral jubilation at the end of the symphony provides a fitting conclusion to this guest performance in the far north.

The human voice, the most natural instrument, has inspired chamber music for centuries, bringing melodic beauty and the unique musicality of languages. This program celebrates the range and timbre of the voice as the ideal chamber collaborator. Music@Menlo debut artists include soprano Tony Arnold, “a luminary in the world of chamber music and art song” (Huffington Post), Met Opera mezzo-soprano Maire Therese Carmack, and baritone John Moore.

The early string quintets on this program represent the passions of their composers: W. A. Mozart, the avid violist wanting to join the ensemble, and Luigi Boccherini, the premier cello virtuoso of his day. The works by these quintet pioneers are juxtaposed with Romantic nineteenth-century essays in the genre, demonstrating the evolution of this versatile grouping. An all-star roster of violinists includes Indianapolis Competition-winner Richard Lin, Kristin Lee, and Julian Rhee.

Johann Sebastian Bach was not only a scholarly composer, but also a popular one. In 1742, he wrote a "Cantate burlesque" in Leipzig, a roughly half-hour-long work later referred to as a peasant cantata . Its distinctive character is not only due to the Saxon dialect in which some sections are written, but also due to the inclusion of dance forms and folk song melodies.

This program begins with Dvořák’s Miniatures for Two Violins and Viola, a captivating suite of graceful, intimate pieces. Next is Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet in A Major, where the clarinet’s virtuosic passages and lyrical warmth blend beautifully with the strings. The evening closes with Weber’s Clarinet Quintet in B-flat Major, a lively showcase of the clarinet’s expressive power and brilliance.

"I make, play, write, compose, write lyrics, sing, pluck, and bow so many different kinds of music because it's the most natural thing for me. Limitless, just like the world is," says double bassist and composer Georg Breinschmid. And so it happened as it had to: Festival Prize winner Matthias Schorn found a soul mate in Breinschmid, who promptly tailored a rustic composition for them both.

Clarinet and string quartet: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart tried this combination for the first time in 1789 - and it was a great success. The quintet that Carl Maria von Weber composed 26 years later for the clarinetist Heinrich Joseph Baermann was just as popular. The fact that both pieces are still among the most popular of their kind today is not only due to their magical sound and melodies, but also to the humorous, cheerful mood that connects them. The path to Joseph Haydn, the grand master of musical humor, is of course not far. It was probably an enterprising publisher who first heard the many bird calls in his famous quartet op. 33 no. 3, to which the piece owes its sales-boosting nickname: "Bird Quartet".
