- **Swan Lake:** Perhaps the world’s most enduringly popular classical ballet, Swan Lake is a classic fairytale of a lovelorn Prince, an evil sorcerer, and a spell that can only be broken by true love. It inspired some of Tchaikovsky’s most sumptuous music, impassioned, delicate, and brilliantly colored.
- **Variations on a Rococo Theme:** This piece pays homage to the suave eighteenth-century style in a charming, lyrical slice of elegance.

A handsome prince, a wicked wizard and a swan princess: Swan Lake might be a ballet about black magic and doomed love, but the real sorcery comes from Tchaikovsky’s ravishing score. That’s the climax of this concert – but make no mistake, tonight there’s wonder from first note to last. Weber’s fairytale overture opens the portals of enchantment, and the award-winning young American cellist Zlatomir Fung sprinkles his own brand of stardust on the delightful Rococo Variations. Tchaikovsky meets Mozart, with a twinkle in his eye.

"The success was tremendous and unprecedented! Critics, artists, amateurs and music lovers were intoxicated ... The auditorium roared apart, loudly proclaiming the new miracle." Thus a report on the premiere in 1821 at the Berlin Schauspielhaus. Der Freischütz struck a chord with the times, every barrel organ played the "Jungfernkranz", every street singer performed it, as Heine reports. Weber had discovered the material in an old ghost book. The story of the hunter Max, who devotes himself to the devil in order to win his bride, touches on people's primal fears. The forest, the epitome of the "German soul", becomes a battleground between good and evil. Weber's music depicts the plight and despair of the people with gripping emotionality; the hope of a happy ending is evoked with fervor. Romantic drama and folk play in one, Der Freischütz is set somewhere between dream and nightmare, fascinating to this day.

Ruth Reinhardt, “an elegant, versatile and committed conductor in the search for expressive colors” (Scherzo), helms this program, which includes Haydn’s Symphony No. 80 —too often overlooked, this turbulent music turns storms to sunlight. The winds sparkle in Hindemith’s enduring Symphonic Metamorphosis of Themes by Carl Maria von Weber; this music was originally sketched as a ballet, and its four distinctive movements maintain a catchy sense of choreography. (Weber gets a chance to speak for himself at the top of the program, through the Overture to his fantastical opera Oberon.) Beethoven’s expressive Third Piano Concerto ranks as some of his finest music; Alessio Bax, whom Gramophone considers to be “clearly among the most remarkable young pianists now before the public,” opens with this gem.

Bei uns hat diesen Auftritt der junge italienische Pianist Federico Colli aus Brescia, Sieger beim Leeds International Piano Competition 2012 und seither weltweit als gefragter Solist unterwegs. Beethovens letztes Klavierkonzert kombiniert unser Chefdirigent Jonathan Darlington mit der letzten Symphonie von Johannes Brahms - mit der tragisch-großen "Vierten" in e-Moll: Musik voller Zorn und Zärtlichkeit, stiller Melancholie und wilder Ausgelassenheit, herber Strenge und bergender Wärme. Damit laufen sich die Symphoniker warm für die Gastspielreise nach England, wo sich das Orchester und sein Chefdirigent am 14. November auch in London präsentieren werden.

Our journey continues down the River Rhine with Robert Schumann and snapshots of the landscape which inspired him. The ‘Rhenish’ Symphony is an outpouring of luscious melodies and a torrent of sheer joy.

BBC Philharmonic - Brahms Piano Concerto No.1 with Garrick Ohlsson

If you are a fan of the clarinet, this evening is absolutely unavoidable. Weber's early romantic, expressive clarinet quintet in B-flat major is distinguished by its beautiful and emotional clarinet melody, which soars high above the accompanying strings and creates a direct connection to the innermost core of the heart. The work demonstrates Weber's skill in utilizing the tonal versatility of the clarinet, from the warmly lyrical to the virtuosic and dancing. The lively dialogue between clarinet and strings provides a lively and classical chamber musical interaction. The quartet was written for Weber's friend, the clarinet virtuoso Heinrich Baermann, who as a touring musician needed chamber music 'showpieces' to play in the cities where an orchestra could not be assembled to accompany clarinet concerts. And as such, the string quartet here is a mini-solo concerto – fully as dramatic and full of tension and pathos as any orchestral work, and with all the 'showmanship' and melodic sweetness that Weber as an opera composer had no trouble inventing .

Our 56th season gets off to a joyous start with Beethoven’s “Eroica” Symphony, a supreme work that is heroic, somber, and ecstatic. Music Director & Conductor Laura Jackson leads the Reno Phil Orchestra in this masterpiece, which redefined the symphonic art form forever. The Reno Phil’s own Eric Fassbender brings his technical prowess to Carl Maria von Weber’s Concerto for Bassoon. Opening the celebration, the sparkling Kauyumari (meaning “blue deer”) by Gabriela Ortiz explores music’s power to grant us access to the intangible, healing our wounds and binding us to what can only be expressed through sound.

Max, the hunter’s apprentice, has to land a direct hit at the upcoming shooting match in order to marry his beloved Agathe. Out of his fear of potential failure, Max gets involved with "dark forces" in the wolf’s canyon: Six sure-fire bullets for his sole use whilst the seventh bullet is reserved for the devil to strike any victim he chooses. Carl Maria von Weber‘s Freischütz, which premiered in 1821, is the epitome of a German romantic opera. Never before have occult, transcendental and supernatural ideas been transformed into music so full of suggestive sounds.

Since winning the prestigious Chopin International Piano Competition in 2010, Yulianna Avdeeva has built an illustrious career as one of the most convincing and sensitive pianists of her generation. Tonight, she joins the Philharmonia
in arguably the most popular concerto in history. Composed as Rachmaninov recovered from years of depression and writer’s block, his Second Piano Concerto is a passionate outpouring of creativity and is packed with more memorable melodies than many composers write in a lifetime.

In 1784, the publicist Christian Friedrich Daniel Schubart enthused about the clarinet: »The character of the clarinet is: emotion dissolved in love – so completely the tone of the sensitive heart«. Carl Maria von Weber was also captivated by the orchestral instrument, still young at the time – especially because of his artistic friendship with Heinrich Joseph Baermann, the renowned clarinetist of the Munich Hofkapelle, who premiered the handsome concertino in 1811: an effect-packed piece with a sumptuous introduction, splendid variations and a sparkling finale. We look forward to the virtuoso interpretation of Jörg Widmann, who will also guide us through two other scores. Korngold, who was considered a musical genius and was later in high demand as a film composer in Hollywood, occasionally returned to his homeland after the Second World War. In 1950, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra played his symphonic serenade for the first time – with its sparkling melodies and dreamlike and rich nuances, it exudes a big share of nostalgia in remembrance of the long-gone era of Romanticism. Mozart's popular G minor symphony was composed in 1788 in a time when he was barely making a living as a freelance artist in Vienna. It fascinates with its grandiose melodic inventiveness and its individual instrumentation sans timpani and trumpets. The music displays »mysterious shivers« in affects such as restlessness, agitation, lamentation and desperation – a profound masterpiece that the Allgemeine Musikalische Zeitung praised with the words: »It will never fail to make an impact, always irresistibly captivating and sweeping away the listener's soul.«

»Music of human breath, it creates a world of its own, conjured up by the sorcerous forces of sounds which, summoned by an imagination rich in visions, enter and pass through our earthly bodies all the way to the soul.« (Henri Sauguet) Our chamber concert offers delightful pieces for flute and bassoon: Vivaldi‘s trio sonata in A minor is a magnificent composition full of intricate sound cascades, but also of introspective moments with expansive cantilenas. The chamber trio in F major, also baroque, was composed by Friedrich Wilhelm Zachow, who lived from 1663 to 1712 and came from a Leipzig family of town pipers: the melodic roles of flute and bassoon interact intensively on the harmonic foundation of the continuo – with expressive upswings and dynamic outbursts of virtuosity. Beethoven‘s trio is a precious early work from his Bonn days – where he confided to the Kurfürst about his early preoccupation with composing, that his muse whispered: »Just try it and jot down some of your soul‘s harmonies!« The piece was probably written around 1786 as chamber music for private use – and the passionate love for the daughter of a count‘s family might have been the impetus for the lush sounds that are interspersed throughout the otherwise very concerto-like progress of the work. Finally, Weber‘s enchanting G minor trio from 1819, when the composer was ill and obviously dealt with his mental suffering with music: the highly romantic composition is thus characterised in parts by deep melancholy, in particular in the pivotal Andante, which bears the title »Shepherd's Lament« – yet it captivates the listener with a very playful character in the framing movements.

Mozart the revolutionary? With works such as the Piano Quartet in G minor, the composer was indeed exploring unknown territory: not only was the instrumentation new, but also the uncompromising, even grim tone that dominates the opening movement. The 2nd String Quartet, which Alexander Borodin dedicated to his wife, is completely different: it looks back on 20 years of happy partnership. Carl Maria von Weber, on the other hand, lets the five instruments act like figures on an opera stage in his B major quintet, with the clarinet as the undisputed prima donna.

Paul Jacobs, “a virtuoso of dazzling technical acumen” (The New York Times), performs Barber’s Toccata festiva, an exuberant showcase for organ containing echoes of J.S. Bach.

Barber’s whimsical Violin Concerto spotlights ESO Concertmaster Robert Uchida with poetic music that will sweep you off your feet. It’s a mystery why Schubert left his eighth symphony unfinished, although one historian claimed, “He could never have finished it because nothing could approach the originality, power, and skill of the first two movements.” On the other hand, Beethoven wrote four different overtures for his one opera, of which the third is the most impressive, and most popular.

The Cleveland Orchestra has been renowned for its recordings and performances of the Brahms symphonies. Brahms's Fourth and last symphony has been called "one of the supreme creative acts of the Romantic era" and is fraught with tension between lyrical beauty, intense drama, and subdued melancholy. The piccolo takes an unusual solo turn when the Orchestra’s principal piccolo, Mary Kay Fink, performs a work commissioned for her from Israeli composer Oded Zehavi.

Jeffrey Fair has been the Principal Horn (The Charles Simonyi Chair) of the Seattle Symphony Orchestra since February 2013 and a member of the Orchestra since 2003. His playing has been described as “compelling,” “evocative,” “fearless and flawless,” and “full of finesse and assertiveness.” He also performs as Principal Horn of the Seattle Opera and has served as guest Principal Horn of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the National Symphony Orchestra. Since 2004, he has appeared regularly at the Seattle Chamber Music Festival and recently presented world premieres by Gerard Schwarz and Lawrence Dillon. He is on the faculty at the University of Washington and is responsible for instruction of all horn students. Mr. Fair has served as Principal Horn and faculty member of the Eastern Music Festival and as Principal Horn of the Arizona Music Festival. Additionally, Mr. Fair appears throughout the Northwest as soloist, chamber musician, clinician, and teacher. Prior to moving to Seattle, he was Principal Horn of the San Antonio Symphony for three seasons, appearing as soloist on several occasions. Mr. Fair completed a Master of Music degree at the Juilliard School as a student of Jerome Ashby. A native of Oklahoma, he received a Bachelor of Music degree, summa cum laude, from the University of Oklahoma as a student of Eldon Matlick.

After an intermission, the audience will be treated to Jennifer Higdon's "blue cathedral," an evocative exploration of life and the afterlife, culminating in Beethoven's "Symphony No. 7 in A Major, Op. 92," hailed as the apotheosis of dance by Richard Wagner.

This concert is not only a showcase of musical brilliance but also a testament to the enduring power of music to inspire and transform. Wilmington Symphony’s River Rhapsody concert will feature Schumann’s final symphony, Symphony No. 3, "Rhenish," which drew inspiration from one of Europe’s main rivers, the majestic Rhine River.

In addition, the concert will showcase the exceptional talents of the High School and UNCW Division winners of our 48th annual Richard R. Deas Young Artist Concerto Competition. Emily Bullard, High School Division winner and harpist, will perform Aria in Classic Style, Op. 19 by Marcel Grandjany. UNCW Division winner, Nicholas Strickland, will perform Alex Glazunov’s Concerto in E-flat major, Op. 109 on alto saxophone.

U of T presents University of Toronto Symphony Orchestra

Experience the musical genius of Beethoven, Weber, and David Singer with the Channel Islands Chamber Orchestra's upcoming concerts. Join us for two unforgettable evenings of classical music mastery. The first concert will take place on November 18, 2023, at 7:00 pm at the Rancho Campana High School Performing Arts Center. The second performance will be held on November 19, 2023, at 3:00 pm at the First United Methodist Church Ventura. Both concerts promise an immersive journey through the works of Ludwig van Beethoven, Edward Elgar, and Carl Maria von Weber, featuring the exceptional talents of clarinetist David Singer.

The program includes Beethoven's Symphony No. 7 in A major, Op. 92, celebrated for its rhythmic vivacity and emotional depth; Elgar's Serenade for String Orchestra in E minor, Op. 20, a piece that captures the pastoral beauty and romantic tenderness of English music; and Weber's Clarinet Concerto No. 1 in F minor, Op. 73, showcasing the clarinet's expressive capabilities through dramatic orchestration and virtuosic melodies.

Hailed by Gramophone as “the Heifetz of the flute,” flutist Marina Piccinini returns to the PCMS stage with “supremely musical” violinist Hye-Jin Kim (The Strad), “warmly communicative” cellist Peter Stumpf (Seen and Heard International), and pianist and Society favorite Cynthia Raim. This program features exciting and technically demanding repertoire for the flute and concludes with Mozart’s Piano Trio in G Major, the first of his later trios to be written for fortepiano, rather than harpsichord.

Carl Maria von Weber, a contemporary of Beethoven, was one of the founders of musical Romanticism (music which favors powerful expressions of emotion, often the emotions of the composers themselves). As a kind of musical father figure, von Weber inspired and influenced an entire generation of composers — including the other composers featured on this program.

Seattle Metropolitan Chamber Orchestra is joined by some of the world’s greatest aerial artists in a one-of-a-kind performance spectacular, just in time for Halloween. Carnevolar: DéComposition is a partnership with Emerald City Trapeze Arts and the School of Acrobatics and New Circus Arts, featuring a world-class flying trapeze act and other awe-inspiring aerial arts such as silks, contortion, and Chinese pole. The orchestra is expanded in size for this program, conducted by Geoffrey Larson.

Simon Trpčeski brings a "fusion of mature interpretation and youthful passion" (The Telegraph, London) to a concerto Rachmaninoff started in his teens and revised later in life. It took Brahms over 20 years to complete his First Symphony, a genre-changing work of passion and unrelenting drive. Weber’s overture distills the drama of devilish pursuits down to a bright flash of orchestral fire.

Woodwind Department Recital

The Florence Symphony Orchestra  welcomes clarinetist Eric Schultz. Eric Schultz is an international prize-winning artist equally in demand as a soloist, chamber musician and interpreter of new music. From Carnegie Hall to Sala Sinfónica Pablo Casals and beyond, Schultz has performed with renowned artists such as Valerie Coleman and Joshua Bell. He can be seen on Netflix and heard on National Public Radio.
