An evening that invokes the spirit of Romanticism: the overture to »Der Freischütz« introduces a key work from the era, whose magic spell was cast early in the Dresden career of Carl Maria von Weber. Robert Schumann’s Piano Concerto in A minor combines poetic expression with formal clarity. First performed in Dresden in December 1845, the work sees the piano and orchestra enter into a lively dialogue. The programme concludes with Mendelssohn’s »Scottish« symphony, an atmospheric piece permeated by a sense of vastness, melancholy and hymn-like power. Drawing inspiration from a visit to Edinburgh’s Holyrood Palace in 1829, the young composer did not complete the symphony until twelve years later.

The "Freischütz Overture" had already established itself quite early on. Independent of the opera to which it actually belongs, it enjoyed a remarkable career in the concert halls. Carl Maria von Weber incorporates the central elements of the opera's plot in it. The forest atmosphere, the Wolf's Glen, and Agathe's love aria characterize the overture, which anticipates the opera's happy ending in radiant C major.

Philippe Herreweghe, the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra, and Robert Schumann form a golden trio. Decades of collaboration have cultivated a deep affinity for Schumann’s music, making each performance a profound experience. Joining them is German cellist Marie-Elisabeth Hecker, born in Schumann’s hometown of Zwickau, for a long-awaited reunion after their celebrated recording of Elgar’s Cello Concerto. Schumann’s own cello concerto, once overlooked, now shines as one of the Romantic era’s finest, blending lyricism with heartfelt emotion. The programme concludes with his hopeful Second Symphony, a testament to resilience in the face of personal darkness. Together, Herreweghe and the Antwerp Symphony deliver a concert that speaks directly to the soul.

Spohr, Weber, Schubert, and Haydn—four titans of Classical-Romantic music history! Undoubtedly, they were pioneers in their respective musical paths, intuitively grasping the trends of their time and laying the foundations for future generations of composers. One thing is certain, however: without the others, they would probably not have existed, nor would they have achieved the virtuoso brilliance for which they are still celebrated today. A mutual influence was clearly present and contributed to the development of the musical landscape of their time. One example of this interaction is the connection between Franz Schubert and Carl Maria von Weber. Although they took different musical paths, as contemporaries they shared a common era of transition from Viennese Classicism to Romanticism. Schubert, inspired by Weber's operas, incorporated some of his ideas into his songs and music-dramatic works, thus coming closer to the Romantic ideal of musical expression.

The German-Jewish composer Paul Hindemith was newly settled in New York in 1951 when he transformed his sketches of a ballet based on themes by Carl Maria von Weber into his “American Symphony”.

Visible from afar, the imposing Elbphilharmonie building towers over Hamburg's Hafencity as the metropolis's new landmark and one of the world's most exciting concert venues. The Duisburg Philharmonic's invitation to make its debut there in September is also a sign of the esteem in which this traditional orchestra is held far beyond the borders of its home city - a philharmonic accolade, so to speak. And for this special occasion, conductor Stefan Blunier has put together a program that revels in the most beautiful Romantic tones: Among the most popular operas of all time is "Der Freischütz", for whose overture Carl Maria von Weber anticipated the greatest hits of his Romantic opera. Full of catchy melodies, the yearning and melancholy First Violin Concerto by Max Bruch, played by Diana Tishchenko, a well-known singer to Duisburg audiences, follows . And finally, Antonín Dvořák's Eighth Symphony, a work overflowing with musical ideas. The "melodies just fly to me," the composer wrote of this cheerful and life-affirming work, for which he borrowed some themes from Bohemian folk music. The exuberant orchestral jubilation at the end of the symphony provides a fitting conclusion to this guest performance in the far north.

Johann Sebastian Bach was not only a scholarly composer, but also a popular one. In 1742, he wrote a "Cantate burlesque" in Leipzig, a roughly half-hour-long work later referred to as a peasant cantata . Its distinctive character is not only due to the Saxon dialect in which some sections are written, but also due to the inclusion of dance forms and folk song melodies.

"I make, play, write, compose, write lyrics, sing, pluck, and bow so many different kinds of music because it's the most natural thing for me. Limitless, just like the world is," says double bassist and composer Georg Breinschmid. And so it happened as it had to: Festival Prize winner Matthias Schorn found a soul mate in Breinschmid, who promptly tailored a rustic composition for them both.

Clarinet and string quartet: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart tried this combination for the first time in 1789 - and it was a great success. The quintet that Carl Maria von Weber composed 26 years later for the clarinetist Heinrich Joseph Baermann was just as popular. The fact that both pieces are still among the most popular of their kind today is not only due to their magical sound and melodies, but also to the humorous, cheerful mood that connects them. The path to Joseph Haydn, the grand master of musical humor, is of course not far. It was probably an enterprising publisher who first heard the many bird calls in his famous quartet op. 33 no. 3, to which the piece owes its sales-boosting nickname: "Bird Quartet".

We bring our season to a close with an array of magical music, guaranteed to dazzle and delight. While Mussorgsky’s Night on Bald Mountain conjures up scenes of madness and fear, Dukas Sorcerer’s Apprentice is all about zany fantasy and frantic antics. Of course, no program about sorcery is complete without a touch of music from Mozart’s beloved Magic Flute. Rounding out the fun, our featured soloist, Kevin Judge, shows off his own wizardry on the “clown of the orchestra,” the bassoon.

‘I am the new Bacchus, pressing out glorious wine for the human spirit’ declared Ludwig van Beethoven. True, he wasn’t known for his modesty – but until you’ve heard his incredible Seventh Symphony in full, heart-pounding flight, you’ve never known just how intoxicating music can be. This is music that demands total commitment, body and soul and we can expect the young British conductor Adam Hickox to raise the roof tonight. First, though, he joins the RPO’s own Principal Trumpet, Matthew Williams, in the delightfully operatic concerto by Beethoven’s great friend Hummel – and ventures deep into the dark heart of the German forest in the Overture to Weber’s supernatural shocker Der Freischütz. The perfect opener to an evening of music to set the pulse racing.

TŌN’s tenth season at the Fisher Center concludes with a program of dazzling and colorful music by three European composers. The concert begins with Kaija Saariaho’s Laterna Magica, inspired by the autobiography of filmmaker Ingmar Bergman. Then the orchestra is joined by clarinetist Miles Wazni, a winner of the 2023 Bard Conservatory Concerto Competition, for Carl Maria von Weber’s virtuosic Clarinet Concerto No. 2. We close with the luminous and beautifully crafted final symphony of French composer Albéric Magnard.

Florian Illies had his big breakthrough as a chronicler of the German sensibility with his first novel, Generation Golf . Most recently, his feature compilations 1913 and Love in Times of Hate have delighted audiences. These works bring the eras shortly before the world wars to life. Most recently, the trained art historian Illies turned far back into German Romanticism and, in his novel Magic of Silence, based on the life of the painter Caspar David Friedrich, traced an era of German history that bears the seeds of modernity. He presents Friedrich as a painter of God-fearing inwardness on the edge of the abyss of abstraction. The symphony concert Sound of Silence provides the soundtrack and shows that Friedrich was not the only one to take this artistic path.

Schubert’s “Great” C major Symphony is considered by many to epitomise romanticism in orchestral music. The first call of the horns is typical of the era – evoking a sound world that is at once warm, idyllic and full of yearning. Conductor Zubin Mehta has included two further Romantic works on the programme: Carl Maria von Weber’s overture to the fairy-tale opera Oberon and Henryk Wieniawski’s Violin Concerto No. 1, with its combination of heartfelt expression and overwhelming virtuosity. Himari, who comes from Japan and is just 13 years old, makes her debut with the Berliner Philharmoniker as soloist.

Spectacular singer and performer Meow Meow, who has been called “sensational” and a “diva of the highest order,” comes to SFCM for its first orchestra concert of the season. The Opus 3 Artist is known for her wild and collaborative stage presence. Her performance of Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht’s last collaboration before they fled Germany features a semi-staged theatrical production on the SFCM stage.

“And the whole thing ended happily,” wrote Weber about his new opera Der Freischütz to his bride Caroline Brandt in March of 1817. But before everything can end happily ever after in this eerie story about fear of failure, societal constraints, and the individual’s right to happiness, the abyss opens up, and for a moment it seems as though evil will prevail. Max, the young forester, knows that his social standing and romantic prospects are dependent upon his performance at the traditional test of skill in marksmanship. But the only way he sees to pass the test involves a deal with the devil. Kaspar, disillusioned, has already submitted to the devil. And Agathe, betrothed to Max, must ask herself: “Do I leave myself to the hand of Fate?” Troubled, she tries to fight against what she perceives to be her destiny’s inevitability. Like all of the characters in the opera, she believes that her God has a true enemy. Weber created a unique musical context in which his characters’ thoughts and deeds all take place in a religious-demonic world, one that is entangled with the dark powers

The Belgian clarinetist Annelien Van Wauwe is known for her emotional, intense and lyrical interpretations. In the performance of Carl Maria von Weber's 2nd Clarinet Concerto, which was written in 1811 for the clarinet virtuoso Heinrich Joseph Baermann, the design principle of sound speech seems crucial to her: she extracts the small musical cells from the musical text and thus finds a precise vocabulary that enables her to articulate herself clearly in melodies. At the same time, she embarks on a highly virtuoso journey in which the composer presents the enormous possibilities of the then new instrument and amazes his audience.

Just as every new year has its January 1st, (almost) every opera has an overture: sometimes as a turbulent introduction to a comedy full of intrigue and passion, as in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's "Figaro", sometimes as a departure into an adventure fairy tale full of magic, as in Mikhail Glinka's "Ruslan and Ludmilla". The Duisburg Philharmonic's salon orchestra welcomes the year 2025 with a selection of overtures that is as varied as it is virtuoso, mixing lively sounds in three-quarter time. "Everything is a waltz" is not only the motto of Johann Strauss and his brother Josef, but also in Carl Maria von Weber's "Invitation to the Dance" from 1819 - the epitome of Biedermeier waltz bliss.

Yi Chen Feng's Second Year Artist Diploma Piano Recital

Without Heinrich Joachim Baermann, Carl Maria von Weber would not have written those wonderful works for clarinet, which are among the best that have ever been composed for this instrument. Baermann, born in Potsdam in 1784 and died in Munich in 1847, was considered the most important clarinetist of his time. He held the solo position in the Munich court orchestra, was a European celebrity thanks to his concert tours, and was close friends with Carl Maria von Weber. Weber was so fascinated by Baermann's clarinet art that in 1811 he wrote two clarinet concertos specifically for him, which emphasize Baermann's virtuoso genius and give him wonderful lyrical passages. We are devoting ourselves here to the first of these clarinet concertos, which offers the soloist space for excellent, virtuoso solos - especially in the beautifully atmospheric Adagio and its elegiac clarinet singing. And when the clarinet and horns sound along with softly weaving strings, it comes very close to the romantic forest atmosphere in Weber's "Freischütz"... The solo part is taken on by "Artist in Residence" Matthias Schorn. The principal clarinetist of the Vienna Philharmonic and the Vienna State Opera is a guest in the world's leading concert halls and opera houses.

It inspired some of Tchaikovsky’s most sumptuous music, impassioned, delicate, and brilliantly colored.
- **Variations on a Rococo Theme:** This piece pays homage to the suave eighteenth-century style in a charming, lyrical slice of elegance.
- **Overture to Oberon:** The magic of Oberon, King of the Fairies, and his enchanted forest kingdom is perfectly captured by the overture to Weber’s opera.
