Emanuel Blumin-Sint is a rising star in the classical music world. The 20-year-old bassoonist has already given solo performances at New York's Carnegie Hall and the Elbphilharmonie. He has collaborated with Sir Simon Rattle and won more than a dozen first prizes in competitions. In 2024, he was awarded the Fanny Mendelssohn Förderpreis, which enabled him to create his debut album, "Leading Bassoon." This record clearly shows that Emanuel Blumin-Sint is on a mission. He wants to bring the bassoon to create a new image, bringing the sonic diversity offered by his instrument closer to the audience. In this "Classics on Sunday – Extra," he plays three of his most beautiful declarations of love for his instrument. Mozart's Bassoon Concerto is a poetic reverie tailor-made for the warm, singing tone of the bassoon. And Rossini beautifully combines the bassoon's soft tone with lightness and Italian flair.

Following CPE Bach’s energetic Symphony in B-flat Major, we showcase LA Phil cellist David Garrett in Hadyn’s beloved Cello Concerto in D Major. The program continues with Schubert’s sparkling Symphony No. 5 and Carl Maria von Weber’s landmark “Invitation to the Dance,” a piece historian John Warrack called “the first and still perhaps most brilliant and poetic example of the Romantic concert waltz.”

The program opens with Carl Maria von Weber's Symphony No. 1, which combines both vitality and melodic beauty. Richard Strauss's symphonic poem "Don Juan" transports the audience into a passionate world of heroic myth. The concert concludes with Antonín Dvořák's Symphony No. 7, an emotionally intense work that impressively reflects the expressive power of the Romantic era. Sebastian Weigle, General Music Director of the Frankfurt Opera from 2008 to 2023, leads the Graz Philharmonic through this fascinating program.

"Man only plays when he is in the full sense of the word a human being, and he is only fully a human being when he plays." These famous words come from Friedrich Schiller, and the program under the direction of our honorary conductor Christoph Eschenbach inspires us to many musical flourishes – with our wind players repeatedly shining through with their playful spirit. And the instrumental pieces hit the mark perfectly, for example in the overture from Weber's opera "Der Freischütz" from 1821: Here, bullets cursed by demonic powers decide the love life of a young hunter in a competition – but "the whole thing ends joyfully," as the composer noted. Afterwards, together with our solo horn player Andreas Kreuzhuber, we perform a fascinating concerto by Reinhold Glière: Although this virtuoso piece was composed in 1950, it is entirely imbued with a romantic spirit.

In the 18th century, Central European composers such as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart invented sounds intended to evoke associations with "Turkish music"—for example, in his opera The Abduction from the Seraglio , which premieres at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in June 2026. In addition to Mozart's Prague Symphony , Tim Fluch will also conduct the orchestral work "Effaced Figures" by Istanbul-born Ege Gür, who was awarded the European Composition Prize in Berlin in 2024 and whose works combine influences of 20th-century music with the traditions of classical Turkish music. Carl Maria von Weber's Clarinet Concerto No. 2 is also on the program.

With our "Artist in Residence," Alexander Krichel, we perform one of the greatest piano works of all time: Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat major. The way Beethoven allows soloist and orchestra to interact, the way he lets one lead at times, the other at times, the way the piano and orchestra meld together, and the way he creates dream worlds with distant keys, is the work of a genius. The opening piece is Carl Maria von Weber's Overture to "Der Freischütz," which surprises with dramatic contrasts and a romantic sound ideal - in the version for organ, it unfolds with an almost orchestral force. Johann Sebastian Bach's Third Brandenburg Concerto in G major, originally intended for strings, becomes a virtuosic challenge in the organ transcription, emphasizing the clarity and brilliance of the Baroque period. With an excerpt from Max Reger's String Quartet in E-flat major, Vogl adds a chamber music touch that preserves the sonic intimacy of the original while exploring the vastness of the instrument. Thursday Concert No. 8 »Between Worlds«

Dvořák’s goal for his Symphony No. 7, here conducted by Andrés Orozco-Estrada, was to surpass all of his previous efforts. Grand, gloomy, and dramatic, it contains few of the Slavic folk–derived, nationalistic elements associated with the composer. The influence of Brahms—particularly his recent Third Symphony, which impressed Dvořák as the finest symphony ever written—permeates the four movements. Mozart’s exuberant and expressive Piano Concerto No. 9 represented a great leap forward in ambition and achievement alike. The young Canadian soloist Jan Lisiecki interprets what legendary pianist Alfred Brendel called “one of the greatest wonders of the world.”

He was the legendary seducer—and ultimately ended up in hell: Don Giovanni in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's version, Don Juan in the ancient Spanish legend, and in Nikolaus Lenau's work, which inspired Richard Strauss's tone poem . Both works offer a captivating auditory experience, as does Henze's overture to a theater. Carl Maria von Weber's favorite instrument was the clarinet, perhaps also because he was commissioned by the Bavarian King Maximilian I to write his Concerto No. 1. While widely performed internationally, it remains (for now?) a hidden gem in Vienna.

That's what you call fate: While the bassoon is featured prominently as a soloist in many symphonies and operas, explicit solo concertos for this particularly dark woodwind instrument are rare. Carl Maria von Weber, the composer of the rather dark opera "Der Freischütz," wrote a bassoon concerto in 1811: an ideal playing field for the French bassoonist Marceau Lefèvre. The Italian conductor and pianist Vanessa Benelli Mosell frames Weber's rarely heard gem with timeless works: Wagner's Ringfarbige Musik der Freude über seinen neuen Sohn Siegfried (Ring-colored Music of Joy over His Newborn Son Siegfried), and Schubert's arguably best-known and unfinished symphony, whose two movements are among the finest of the entire 19th century.

Sometimes gently swaying, sometimes wildly stomping – this is how the successive waltzes in Carl Maria von Weber's "Invitation to the Dance" sound. With this piece, originally composed for piano, Weber created a depiction of the intoxicating love of dance of his time in 1819. The Spanish composer Manuel de Falla – the music world will celebrate his 150th birthday in 2026 – was so fascinated by a performance of the "Ballets Russes" in Paris that he wanted to create music for a ballet himself. Inspired by the dancer Pastore Imperio from his homeland, de Falla studied the tradition of Andalusian flamenco and the singing style of "cante jondo" and, on this basis, wrote the ballet "El amor brujo" (The Love Spell) for voice and orchestra in the winter of 1914/15, from which he transformed a year later into a symphonic suite with voice. The solo part is played by Ieva Prudnikovaite, who is currently delighting audiences as Carmen at the Lübeck Theater.

An evening that invokes the spirit of Romanticism: the overture to »Der Freischütz« introduces a key work from the era, whose magic spell was cast early in the Dresden career of Carl Maria von Weber. Robert Schumann’s Piano Concerto in A minor combines poetic expression with formal clarity. First performed in Dresden in December 1845, the work sees the piano and orchestra enter into a lively dialogue. The programme concludes with Mendelssohn’s »Scottish« symphony, an atmospheric piece permeated by a sense of vastness, melancholy and hymn-like power. Drawing inspiration from a visit to Edinburgh’s Holyrood Palace in 1829, the young composer did not complete the symphony until twelve years later.

The "Freischütz Overture" had already established itself quite early on. Independent of the opera to which it actually belongs, it enjoyed a remarkable career in the concert halls. Carl Maria von Weber incorporates the central elements of the opera's plot in it. The forest atmosphere, the Wolf's Glen, and Agathe's love aria characterize the overture, which anticipates the opera's happy ending in radiant C major.

Decades of collaboration have cultivated a deep affinity for Schumann’s music, making each performance a profound experience. Joining them is German cellist Marie-Elisabeth Hecker, born in Schumann’s hometown of Zwickau, for a long-awaited reunion after their celebrated recording of Elgar’s Cello Concerto. Spohr, Weber, Schubert, and Haydn—four titans of Classical-Romantic music history! Undoubtedly, they were pioneers in their respective musical paths, intuitively grasping the trends of their time and laying the foundations for future generations of composers. One thing is certain, however: without the others, they would probably not have existed, nor would they have achieved the virtuoso brilliance for which they are still celebrated today. A mutual influence was clearly present and contributed to the development of the musical landscape of their time. One example of this interaction is the connection between Franz Schubert and Carl Maria von Weber. Although they took different musical paths, as contemporaries they shared a common era of transition from Viennese Classicism to Romanticism. Schubert, inspired by Weber's operas, incorporated some of his ideas into his songs and music-dramatic works, thus coming closer to the Romantic ideal of musical expression.

Visible from afar, the imposing Elbphilharmonie building towers over Hamburg's Hafencity as the metropolis's new landmark and one of the world's most exciting concert venues. The Duisburg Philharmonic's invitation to make its debut there in September is also a sign of the esteem in which this traditional orchestra is held far beyond the borders of its home city - a philharmonic accolade, so to speak. And for this special occasion, conductor Stefan Blunier has put together a program that revels in the most beautiful Romantic tones: Among the most popular operas of all time is "Der Freischütz", for whose overture Carl Maria von Weber anticipated the greatest hits of his Romantic opera. Full of catchy melodies, the yearning and melancholy First Violin Concerto by Max Bruch, played by Diana Tishchenko, a well-known singer to Duisburg audiences, follows . And finally, Antonín Dvořák's Eighth Symphony, a work overflowing with musical ideas. The "melodies just fly to me," the composer wrote of this cheerful and life-affirming work, for which he borrowed some themes from Bohemian folk music. The exuberant orchestral jubilation at the end of the symphony provides a fitting conclusion to this guest performance in the far north.

Johann Sebastian Bach was not only a scholarly composer, but also a popular one. In 1742, he wrote a "Cantate burlesque" in Leipzig, a roughly half-hour-long work later referred to as a peasant cantata . Its distinctive character is not only due to the Saxon dialect in which some sections are written, but also due to the inclusion of dance forms and folk song melodies.

Clarinet and string quartet: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart tried this combination for the first time in 1789 - and it was a great success. The quintet that Carl Maria von Weber composed 26 years later for the clarinetist Heinrich Joseph Baermann was just as popular. The fact that both pieces are still among the most popular of their kind today is not only due to their magical sound and melodies, but also to the humorous, cheerful mood that connects them. The path to Joseph Haydn, the grand master of musical humor, is of course not far. It was probably an enterprising publisher who first heard the many bird calls in his famous quartet op. 33 no. 3, to which the piece owes its sales-boosting nickname: "Bird Quartet".

Paganini, then Dvořák: the young American violinist Kevin Zhu, most recently heard at the Dresdner Musikfestspiele with Paganini’s 24 Caprices, »scaling the Mount Everest of violin literature« (thus the publication »Musik in Dresden«), returns this season with Dvořák’s only Violin Concerto, a gem heard far too rarely. Stylistically, it forms part of the so-called Slavic period, in which the Czech composer dedicated himself with particular intensity to the folklore of his homeland.

Featuring Quinn Mason’s A Joyous Trilogy, a contemporary masterpiece that ushers in a celebration of musical diversity and innovation, the evening continues with Ludwig van Beethoven’s monumental Symphony No. 9, Op. 125, a timeless work that transcends eras with its epic and powerful resonance.

Celebrate the grand finale of SOGO’s 25th anniversary season with a spectacular concert! Join us as we embark on a musical journey with the Conservatory Orchestra performing Dvořák’s lively Polka for Prague Students, followed by the enchanting Andante and Rondo Ongarese by Carl Maria von Weber, featuring the virtuosity of senior clarinetist Diego Cortes-Monroy. The evening culminates in a celestial performance of Mars and Jupiter from Holst’s epic The Planets, presented in a thrilling side-by-side collaboration with members of the Olympia Symphony Orchestra. The Brass Choir and Academy and Philharmonic orchestras will also perform. This unforgettable concert promises to highlight the extraordinary talent of over 160 young musicians from across the South Sound region.

Before the soloists can shine in the 9th symphony concert, the evening opens with Franz Schubert's Overture in C major in the Italian style. He wrote this in 1817 after a performance of Rossini's "Tancredi" and bet with friends that he too could write such music.

Our "Artist in Residence" Matthias Schorn is the principal clarinetist of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and performs in the world's most famous concert halls. But you can also see him in lederhosen on pub and festival stages and with partners beyond the classical music scene. He often arranges such cross-border excursions with Georg Breinschmid, whose latest composition we are premiering this evening in cooperation with the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival.

We bring our season to a close with an array of magical music, guaranteed to dazzle and delight. While Mussorgsky’s Night on Bald Mountain conjures up scenes of madness and fear, Dukas Sorcerer’s Apprentice is all about zany fantasy and frantic antics. Of course, no program about sorcery is complete without a touch of music from Mozart’s beloved Magic Flute. Rounding out the fun, our featured soloist, Kevin Judge, shows off his own wizardry on the “clown of the orchestra,” the bassoon.

‘I am the new Bacchus, pressing out glorious wine for the human spirit’ declared Ludwig van Beethoven. True, he wasn’t known for his modesty – but until you’ve heard his incredible Seventh Symphony in full, heart-pounding flight, you’ve never known just how intoxicating music can be. This is music that demands total commitment, body and soul and we can expect the young British conductor Adam Hickox to raise the roof tonight. First, though, he joins the RPO’s own Principal Trumpet, Matthew Williams, in the delightfully operatic concerto by Beethoven’s great friend Hummel – and ventures deep into the dark heart of the German forest in the Overture to Weber’s supernatural shocker Der Freischütz. The perfect opener to an evening of music to set the pulse racing.

The penultimate concert of the season transports us into the world of 19th-century German vocal music. Prague's Rudolfinum will first resound with Weber's overture to his most famous opera Der Freischütz, considered the first German Romantic opera in history and a cornerstone of Romantic music itself.
