Winter Morning Walks will take you for a walk on Sunday, December 8, at 8 a.m. in Mariekerke (near Bornem). . The Casco Phil string quartet put together a warm and soothing program to warm up your winter toes. The meditative Third String Quartet by minimalist Philip Glass is linked to several other masterpieces that achieve maximum expression with minimal means. For example, Japanese pianist Gen Tomuro pays tribute to Ryuichi Sakamoto, the recently deceased Japanese 'king of minimalism'. Arvo Pärt's captivating Für Alina completes the search for beauty in simplicity.

Richter is a prolific collaborator who has worked scoring Dior shows for Kim Jones and with film directors Martin Scorsese and Ari Folman. His ninth solo album, ‘In A Landscape’, brings together the electronic and the acoustic, the human and the natural world, the big questions of life and the quiet pleasures of living. ‘On The Nature of Daylight’, the album’s epic centerpiece, featured on HBO’s The Last Of Us. Richter performed the album in full at Glastonbury Festival last year alongside Tilda Swinton, who joined Richter onstage to recite the spoken word pieces she contributed for the original recording.

One of the most influential and acclaimed composers of all time, Max Richter’s fusion of classical technique and electronic technology – heard across genre-defining solo albums and countless scores for film, dance, art and fashion – has won him legions of fans around the world and blazed a trail for a generation of musicians.

He’ll be joining us here at the Hall on Monday 4 November as part of his first world tour, celebrating the release of his ninth solo album, In A Landscape, out September 2024.

Max Richter is the composer of music for dozens of feature films and documentaries. The European Film Academy voted him the best film composer in 2008. He changed the music of Antonio Vivaldi in the spirit of minimalism and postmodernism. Recomposed by Max Richter: Vivaldi, The Four Seasons is one of Richter’s most famous works. After its release in 2012, the recording topped the iTunes Classical Music charts in over 20 countries.

Dazzling virtuosity awaits in Vivaldi’s Concerto in G for Two Violins and Two Cellos, which is followed by French Baroque composer Rameau’s Opera Suite. The practice of excerpting suites from the orchestral music in operas began with Rameau, who remarked that people seemed to enjoy the orchestral music more than the opera!

Wayne McGregor’s award-winning ballet triptych Woolf Works re-creates the emotions, themes, and fluid style of three of Virginia Woolf’s novels: Mrs. Dalloway, Orlando, and The Waves. Eugene Astapov presents a World Premiere, "Burial Rites: In Memoriam Marcus Gibbons 2023," a tribute to a late, cherished teenage piano student. Chris Paul Harman offers a whimsical look at Clementi with "Clementi sottosopra," and John Corigliano’s "Symphony No. 1 1988" provides a profound commemoration of friends lost during the AIDS crisis.

This final concert not only showcases the innovative spirit of the Esprit Orchestra but also commemorates the talent and memories of those we've lost. The evening is supported by the generous contributions of the RBC Foundation, SOCAN Foundation, and Sofia Gomez Gibbons.

The emotionally powerful original work by LAB Artistic Director Melissa Barak returns to the stage in 2025. Memoryhouse is an abstract ballet composed of vignettes commemorating the 6 million Jewish lives lost during the Holocaust; the ballet is set to Max Richter’s powerful album of the same name in its entirety. The ballet has 18 movements, totaling the number of tracks on the album.  Some movements connect with others while some live on their own. No alterations were made to the score, the electronic voices, sounds, and touches are part of the original recording. This haunting piece blends modern, traditional, and abstract dance forms taking audiences on a journey of emotional reflection.
