The OPRL opens the "New Classics" series with new horizons: a major figure of the Modern Classical movement, Max Richter draws inspiration from the trials and hopes of candidates for exile to deliver a minimalist work, with cinematic lyricism, magnified by a poignant orchestration. The Estonian-American conductor Kristjan Järvi, who recorded Exiles for Deutsche Grammophon with great public acclaim, brings it into dialogue with some of his own compositions, where he deploys all his capacity to break down musical barriers and explore new sonic territories.

Max Richter is the composer of music for dozens of feature films and documentaries and was voted the best film composer of 2008 by to the European Film Academy.

Recomposed by Max Richter: Vivaldi, The Four Seasons is one of Richter’s most famous works, recreating  the music of Antonio Vivaldi in the spirit of minimalism and postmodernism. After its release in 2012, the recording topped the iTunes Classical Music charts in over 20 countries.

This highly anticipated concert includes a rarely heard live performance of Max Richter‘s haunting “November” for solo violin and orchestra performed by Fort Smith Symphony Concertmaster, Er-Gene Kahng. Following “November” is the beautiful Concerto for Tuba and Orchestra by British composer Ralph Vaughan Williams, performed by Fort Smith Symphony Principal Tubist, Ryan Robinson, showing off the beautiful lyric qualities of the tuba.  After intermission, the mighty Symphony No. 2 by Finnish composer Jean Sibelius will be performed. This amazing work has long been recognized as one of the great symphonies of the Romantic era. It includes one of the most epic finales of any symphony ever composed. Hearing this program live is an event not to be missed.

The emotionally powerful original work by LAB Artistic Director Melissa Barak returns to the stage in 2025. Memoryhouse is an abstract ballet composed of vignettes commemorating the 6 million Jewish lives lost during the Holocaust; the ballet is set to Max Richter’s powerful album of the same name in its entirety. The ballet has 18 movements, totaling the number of tracks on the album.  Some movements connect with others while some live on their own. No alterations were made to the score, the electronic voices, sounds, and touches are part of the original recording. This haunting piece blends modern, traditional, and abstract dance forms taking audiences on a journey of emotional reflection.

Winter Morning Walks will take you for a walk on Sunday, December 8, at 8 a.m. in Mariekerke (near Bornem). . The Casco Phil string quartet put together a warm and soothing program to warm up your winter toes. The meditative Third String Quartet by minimalist Philip Glass is linked to several other masterpieces that achieve maximum expression with minimal means. For example, Japanese pianist Gen Tomuro pays tribute to Ryuichi Sakamoto, the recently deceased Japanese 'king of minimalism'. Arvo Pärt's captivating Für Alina completes the search for beauty in simplicity.

His ninth solo album, ‘In A Landscape’, brings together the electronic and the acoustic, the human and the natural world, the big questions of life and the quiet pleasures of living. ‘On The Nature of Daylight’, the album’s epic centerpiece, featured on HBO’s The Last Of Us. Richter performed the album in full at Glastonbury Festival last year alongside Tilda Swinton, who joined Richter onstage to recite the spoken word pieces she contributed for the original recording.

One of the most influential and acclaimed composers of all time, Max Richter’s fusion of classical technique and electronic technology – heard across genre-defining solo albums and countless scores for film, dance, art and fashion – has won him legions of fans around the world and blazed a trail for a generation of musicians.

He’ll be joining us here at the Hall on Monday 4 November as part of his first world tour, celebrating the release of his ninth solo album, In A Landscape, out September 2024.

To start our Classics Series, Music Director Nicholas Hersh and the MSO will guide us through the four seasons. The evening will start with Mendelssohn’s romantic Overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Ortiz’s La Calaca which features driving rhythms and stirring melodies inspired by the traditions of Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) that celebrate the afterlife in Mexican culture. Finally, we’ll dive deeper into each season with a “mixtape” from Hersh featuring one movement each from Vivaldi, Richter, Ysaÿe, and Piazzolla to create an exploration not only of the seasons, but of each of their cultures.

Dazzling virtuosity awaits in Vivaldi’s Concerto in G for Two Violins and Two Cellos, which is followed by French Baroque composer Rameau’s Opera Suite. The practice of excerpting suites from the orchestral music in operas began with Rameau, who remarked that people seemed to enjoy the orchestral music more than the opera!

Wayne McGregor’s award-winning ballet triptych Woolf Works re-creates the emotions, themes, and fluid style of three of Virginia Woolf’s novels: Mrs. Dalloway, Orlando, and The Waves. It brings to life Woolf’s world of “granite and rainbow”, where human beings are at once both physical body and uncontained essence. Chris Paul Harman offers a whimsical look at Clementi with "Clementi sottosopra," and John Corigliano’s "Symphony No. 1 1988" provides a profound commemoration of friends lost during the AIDS crisis.
