As Hitler’s armies surrounded the city of Leningrad, and bombs rained down on a starving population, Dmitri Shostakovich sat down and – somehow – composed his Seventh Symphony. Written for massed battalions of musicians, this is music from the front line: a roar of defiance from an unbreakable city. You can hear it this afternoon conducted by Vasily Petrenko, whose recording of the piece was described by one critic as ‘devastating’. It’s a stupendous climax to a concert that’s all about struggle and resistance: whether it’s Sibelius defying Russian imperialism with a mighty hymn to his native Finland or the poet Walt Whitman’s pleas for tolerance, set to music by the exiled Kurt Weill. Singing them today is the fabulous British baritone Roderick Williams: a born communicator at the heart of a truly epic programme.

Our honorary conductor Iván Fischer is a guarantee for unusual programmes. This time, he and the Konzerthausorchester will perform works by four composers who were ostracised and persecuted by the National Socialists and whose works shaped the avant-garde of the interwar period. Paul Hindemith, Kurt Weill and Hanns Eisler found their way to the United States via detours, but Erwin Schulhoff was interned in Prague, deported and died of tuberculosis in a camp in Bavaria.

Whoever has money has power. And whoever doesn't will find it difficult to build a fortune. This was already the case in 1837 in London's Soho or in Brecht's Berlin - and it is no different today. Life without capitalism is no longer imaginable, and in a self-corrupting system, everything has become a commodity - love, morality, and misery. Businessmen and the police are just as criminal and devoid of morals as criminals and beggars - there is no distinction between the bourgeoisie and the crooks. The top and the bottom of society merge seamlessly into one another. What connects them is money, and good business probably justifies any immoral behavior.

Barrie Kosky’s Berliner Ensemble production is sly and perversely sexy, embracing seediness and cynicism with glitzy disillusion and more than a hint of danger. A master showman, Kosky manages to beguile us through the familiar rise and fall of Brecht’s sociopathic leading man, adding a knowing creepiness to his unrepentant antics.

Love Life, the only collaboration between Kurt Weill and Alan Jay Lerner, depicts a love story that takes place over 200 years of American history, through the eyes of a family who never ages. This rarely staged production is directed by Tony winner Victoria Clark (Kimberly Akimbo) and explores the epic and intimate aspects of a marriage through a juxtaposition of heartfelt scenes and satirical vaudeville acts.

In the 20th century, the gap between art and entertainment widened. But some composers did not play along: Kurt Weill, Erwin Dressel, Erich Wolfgang Korngold and George Gershwin refused to be pigeonholed and proved on both sides of the Atlantic that sophisticated music does not have to be boring. Kurt Weill's varied orchestral works have been rediscovered in recent years, and Erwin Dressel wrote one of the few solo concertos for the jazz instrument saxophone. After his expulsion from Austria, Korngold composed almost exclusively film music, and won an Oscar for his music for the major Hollywood production "Robin Hood". Gershwin set Americans' longing for old Europe to music in a humorous way. The internationally renowned conductor Erina Yashima will be appearing for the first time at the podium of the State Philharmonic.

The Weimar Republic’s urgent blend of desperate defiance and vast artistic possibility come together in this Ensemble Modern performance. It opens with Hindemith’s Kammermusik No. 1, a masterstroke of postmodernism. Erich Korngold’s hit suite from Much Ado About Nothing offers an early glimpse at his wildly successful partnership with Max Reinhardt, more than a decade before they fled Europe and made Hollywood history. Schoenberg’s Accompaniment to a Cinematographic Scene is—almost certainly intentionally—not so much a film “accompaniment” as it is a full-fledged main attraction. Mezzo-soprano Wallis Giunta joins in HK Gruber and Christian Muthspiel’s brand-new arrangement of The Seven Deadly Sins, a biting satire composed the same year Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht’s works were banned in their native Germany.

Collaborating with the Savannah VOICE Festival to present Mark Delavan (who played Gianni Schicchi in the collaborative Puccini production at SMF 2015), the Bach Cantata in the first half is contrasted by a second half of songs by Copland and Weill. How interesting would it have been for Bach to have sat in the audience to hear the songs by Copland and Kurt Weill and to see his response?

The sound world conjures up Berlin cabaret, but Seven Deadly Sins begins and ends in Louisiana, evoking the exile of its creators. Brecht's sharp-tongued travesty, in which the beggars and crooks act more bourgeois than good society, seems to have lost a few of its sharp teeth today, so natural has Brecht's critique of capitalism become to us. Here, crime is subject to the ice-cold laws of the market and love has a precisely calculated price. And so greed and profiteering are the determining principles that neither an old male friendship nor a tender romance can withstand. Doesn't that still sound familiar?

Through music spanning the 1920s to today, the American Composers Orchestra explores the United States’ influence on the Weimar Republic, and, conversely, aspects of the Weimar legacy that resonate now in American culture. They perform Antheil’s Jazz Symphony, one of the first significant classical pieces influenced by jazz; short works by Duke Ellington, which caused a sensation during Sam Wooding and the Chocolate Kiddies’ 1925 tour of Berlin and Hamburg; and “My Ship” from Kurt Weill’s Lady in the Dark, with lyrics by Ira Gershwin. New works include a world premiere by Tonia Ko, co-commissioned by Carnegie Hall; a world premiere by John Glover, featuring mezzo-soprano Chrystal E. Williamsand accordionist Felipe Hostins; and the New York premiere of Clans from Jerod Impichchaachaaha’ Tate’s Lowak Shoppala’.

Baritone Justin Austin's star has risen considerably since his 2017 Carnegie Hall debut. In his return to the Hall—featured as part of the Fall of the Weimar Republic: Dancing on the Precipice festival—the inimitable Weill and Brecht songbook takes the spotlight. Hear the tale of “Mack the Knife” in selections from the uncategorizable Threepenny Opera, which premiered in Berlin in 1928; rousing settings of Walt Whitman poems, which Weill wrote throughout the 1940s after emigrating to the United States; and additional pieces soon to be announced.

The Knights are a musically omnivorous chamber ensemble, a self-described “fellowship of adventurous musicians dedicated to transforming the orchestral experience.” In this program of Ravel, Weill and Brecht, Bob Dylan, Chico Buarque, and Du Yun, the orchestra—conducted by Eric Jacobsen—welcomes pipa virtuoso Wu Man, “one of the rare musicians who has changed the history of the instrument she plays” (The Boston Globe); and The Knights’ own multifaceted violinist and singer-songwriter Christina Courtin. To close the evening, special guest Magos Herrera—a versatile interpreter of jazz and Latin American music—joins the group for a new arrangement of Buarque’s powerful, Weill/Brecht–inspired “Geni e o Zepelim.” As part of Carnegie Hall’s Fall of the Weimar Republic festival, this program looks to the past and present through multiple layers of history and culture, in true “Knightsian” style.

Continuing a long-standing relationship with pipa legend Wu Man, this program will feature the world premiere performance of Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Du Yun’s new work for pipa and orchestra and explore themes of cultural memory, transformation of old into new, and a sense of theatricality within both instrumental and vocal music.

A rare symphonic piece by Kurt Weill follows, sure to impress listeners familiar only with the composer’s theatrical works. Conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin calls it “a jewel [from] someone who completely mastered the symphonic world.” Finally, hear Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue like you never have before, as the Marcus Roberts Trio—which has “reinvented” (Chicago Tribune) the masterpiece alongside multiple top orchestras—joins us in celebrating its 100th anniversary.

A chamber ensemble handpicked from The Met Orchestra explores the Weimar Republic’s “Golden Twenties.” This program highlights the era’s incredible contradictions and the thrillingly divergent, thriving artistic movements that came into shape as the republic approached catastrophe. Hear music from Weill and Brecht’s smash hit, the soon-to-be-banned Threepenny Opera. Hindemith’s grinning reconstruction of Wagner is paired with the well-loved Kammermusik No. 1, which offers excitement of a more sincere, if not significantly less eccentric nature. Also included are two of Schoenberg’s arrangements of Johann Strauss Jr., in which the “father of atonality” gave reverential treatment to Vienna’s beloved “Waltz King.”

We take a detour through jazz-mad Europe. Darius Milhaud, Igor Stravinsky, and Kurt Weill all fell in love with American jazz, and their sassy music bears its stamp. Victor Goines, jazz clarinetist and president of Jazz St. Louis, rocks and wails in Stravinsky’s Ebony Concerto. American One Acts: a double bill

Founded in 1945 by Edmond de Stoutz, the Zurich Chamber Orchestra cultivates a broad repertoire, ranging from baroque to classical and from romantic to contemporary music. Hope was appointed Music Director of the Zurich Chamber Orchestra, effective with the 2016-17 season, succeeding Sir Roger Norrington.

Hope has enjoyed a thriving international solo career for more than 30 years. Celebrated for his musical versatility and dedication to humanitarian causes, he has been recognized with a string of honors including the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and the 2015 European Culture Prize for Music. An exclusive Deutsche Grammophon artist since 2007, he has an award-winning discography and is also a popular radio and television host who recently anchored the TV and streaming series Hope@Home. In 2019 he completed his 16th and final season as Associate Artistic Director of Georgia’s Savannah Music Festival as well as becoming Artistic Director of Dresden’s Frauenkirche Cathedral. Since 2020, following in the distinguished footsteps of Kurt Masur and Joseph Joachim, Hope started his tenure as President of the Beethoven-Haus Bonn.

AMERICA IN WEIMAR: ON THE MARGINS explores American influence on the Weimar period and—conversely—the legacy of Weimar’s embrace of transgression, non-Teutonic identity, and utopian ideals, all of which continually resonate in today’s American art and music.

America in Weimar: On the Margins

Orchestra Miami presents the Florida premiere of the oratorio The Road of Promise, adapted from Kurt Weill’s opera The Eternal Road by Ed Harsh. This version condenses Weill’s original 4- act opera into 14 movements lasting a little over two hours. The opera was conceived as a method of raising the American public’s awareness to Hitler’s persecution of the Jews in 1937. Set in a synagogue where Jews hide as a pogrom rages outside, the story combines Biblical & pre-World War II Jewish history.  The performances will be at Temple Emanu-el in Miami Beach, the oldest Conservative congregation on Miami Beach and considered to be one of the most beautiful synagogues in America.

The Road of Promise cast features stars from the Metropolitan Opera and a combined choir of over 100 voices. The cast is led by tenor Allan Glassman in the roles of the Rabbi/Narrator & baritone Mark Delavan in the roles of Abraham/ Moses/ Jeremiah, and soprano Elizabeth Caballero as Rachel. The performance will be conducted by Orchestra Miami's Artistic Director, Elaine Rinaldi, with stage direction by Vernon Hartman.
