To widen our array of concert offerings, we bring Kurt Weill’s rarely heard second symphony, composed just before his escape to France during the second world war.  It is a must-hear mix of neo classical irony and modernism.  Sergei Rachmaninoff’s third symphony, which the composer called ‘one of my best pieces’, is a masterclass in melody.

What do you do if you’ve had a falling-out with a cherished friend and advisor and want to make amends? Well, if you’re Johannes Brahms and violinist Josef Joachim is your friend, a Double Concerto is the perfect peace offering, expressed in musical language. A give-and-take between violin and cello as they trade phrases and musical gestures full of drama and lyricism, confirming the emotional capital they’ve invested in one another over the decades. Bringing the concerto to life are Chad Hoopes, internationally lauded faculty member of Southern Methodist University, and world-renowned cellist Jan Vogler. Maurice Cohn also leads the first DSO performance of Weill’s Second Symphony, composed in the fraught Post-World-War-I period. The funeral cortège-second movement, says commentator David Drew, is followed by a rondo finale with “marches and counter-marches, and a demented tarantella coda.”

Julia Sporsén is one of Sweden’s most acclaimed sopranos today. She was awarded the Svenska Dagbladet Opera Prize in 2023 for her portrayal of the title role in Bellini’s Norma at Folkoperan, with the jury stating: “In the service of artistic expression, she tests all boundaries with beautiful sensitivity and complete vocal mastery.” Equally praised was her performance as Desdemona in Verdi’s Otello at the Gothenburg Opera last season.

Jonathan Peachum, a successful entrepreneur in organized begging, has the city firmly in his grip. No one who wants to make it as a beggar can get past him. Only his daughter Polly, of all people, doesn't listen to him. She has plans to marry Macheath, known as Mackie Messer, who is also a big name in the London underworld. Macheath has good contacts in the authorities, especially with Police Chief Tiger Brown. These contacts are very useful in preventing the occasional unpleasant (murder) story from becoming a problem. But now it's not just Polly's father who is out to get him; other women he has promised to marry are also reminding people of themselves. In The Threepenny Opera, Kurt Weill mixes elements of jazz, tango, and fairground music, garnishing them with sideswipes at opera and operetta. The piece, which is based on John Gay's baroque opera parody The Beggar's Opera , is directed by Jan Neumann, who has staged the plays Sensemann & Söhne and kurz&nackig at the Staatstheater Mainz, among others.

Inselmusik 2025 brings together experienced and young chamber musicians who will immerse themselves in the atmosphere of the island of Rügen for three days of music-making. Eckart Runge, former cellist of the legendary Artemis Quartet, and his duo partner Jacques Ammon will lead the festival and also present their own transcendent programs. The young musicians will have the opportunity to showcase their work in portrait concerts.

South African soprano Golda Schultz, the ‘glorious’ star of 2020’s Last Night, returns to the Proms with songs by Bernstein, Gershwin, Weill and others. Bask in the sultry heat of the Deep South in ‘Summertime’ from Porgy and Bess; feel the intensity of first love in ‘Somewhere’ from West Side Story. A programme of contrasting moods and colours also includes Schreker’s sensuous Chamber Symphony – glittering and mercurial – and the bold, folk-infused dances of Stravinsky’s ballet The Firebird.

The Chamber Orchestra of Europe (COE), founded in 1981 by former members of the European Community Youth Orchestra, has long been one of the world's leading orchestras. Still organized as a project-based independent ensemble, this ensemble has been a regular guest at the Musikfest since 1994, and this year marks its twelfth appearance. With Robin Ticciati, Chief Conductor of the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Music Director of Glyndebourne Festival Opera, and newly appointed Honorary Member of the COE, the program showcases the richness of music from the first half of the 20th century. All of the composers featured in the program were closely connected to a wide variety of musical movements, thus demonstrating a truly pluralistic approach to style, yet never questioning tonality in their works of great expressive density. And when the South African soprano Golda Schultz sings songs and arias by Gershwin, Weill, Korngold and Bernstein at her music festival debut with her wonderfully warm, extremely expressive and technically flawless voice, then happiness is complete!

Is it jazz, musical, or opera? Is it American or European? It’s hard to say for sure when it comes to the American music of the early twentieth century, influenced as it was by exiles. The Chamber Orchestra of Europe present arias with a captivating Broadway flair, as if tailor-made for the brilliant and shimmering voice of South African soprano Golda Schultz, whose career is fast on the rise at the world’s major opera houses. Immigrants Stravinsky, Korngold, and Weill meet second-generation Americans Gershwin and Bernstein – their music reveals both personal dislocation and bold innovation. These works are contrasted with Beethoven’s concise and humorous Symphony No. 8 as the Chamber Orchestra of Europe once again demonstrates its top credentials as a Beethoven orchestra.

Two masterpieces from the 20th century form an unforgettable double bill that could not be more topical, given its similarities to today's social and political situation. Kurt Weill' s Die sieben Todsünden tells the story of sisters Anna 1 and Anna 2, who commit the seven deadly sins in seven cities to save their families. Der Kaiser von Atlantis is a gripping parable about a war machine so destructive that even death refuses to do its job unless the emperor himself is willing to die first. Composer Viktor Ullmann wrote this work in the Theresienstadt concentration camp, but was deported to Auschwitz, where he was murdered, before its premiere.

Shostakovich's piano concertos are rarely separated. The first dates from 1933. With its witty humor, it is reminiscent of silent film music: the composer once earned his living as a cinema pianist. The neoclassical second from 1957, on the other hand, seems out of date. "I have finished a piano concerto that has no value whatsoever," judged the Russian. But like so many things, these words should not be taken too lightly: Shostakovich composed the work for his son, who he did not want to prevent from seeing it. To open the Shostakovich Days, Marie Jacquot combines the Janus-faced pair with Kurt Weill's 2nd Symphony, which was premiered in exile in Paris in 1934.

Shostakovich’s two piano concertos are worlds apart. The lively humour of the first, which dates back to 1933, is reminiscent of music for the silent screen; indeed, the composer had once earned his living as a cinema pianist. The neoclassical second from 1957, on the other hand, seems unrooted in time. The composer’s own view was merciless: »I have finished a piano concerto that has no redeeming artistic merits«. Yet perhaps his words should be taken with a pinch of salt: Shostakovich composed the work for his son, and he did not hinder him from performing it. To help launch the Shostakovich Festival, Marie Jacquot is combining this Janus-faced pair of works with Kurt Weill’s Symphony No. 2, which premiered in Paris in 1934, the year in which the composer fled Nazi Germany.

The end of the season will be a tribute to the vibrant American musical life, and inspiration has been drawn from jazz, blues, bebop, rock'n'roll and the cabaret genre.



It begins with Duke Ellington's charming musical portrait of the New York district of Harlem. He takes listeners on a Sunday morning walk – in his own words: “We walk from 110th Street up 7th Avenue, north through the Spanish and West Indian Quarter towards the business district that is on 125th Street... You can hear a parade go by past, or a funeral, or you can recognize the music of those demanding civil rights.”

As Hitler’s armies surrounded the city of Leningrad, and bombs rained down on a starving population, Dmitri Shostakovich sat down and – somehow – composed his Seventh Symphony. Written for massed battalions of musicians, this is music from the front line: a roar of defiance from an unbreakable city. You can hear it this afternoon conducted by Vasily Petrenko, whose recording of the piece was described by one critic as ‘devastating’. It’s a stupendous climax to a concert that’s all about struggle and resistance: whether it’s Sibelius defying Russian imperialism with a mighty hymn to his native Finland or the poet Walt Whitman’s pleas for tolerance, set to music by the exiled Kurt Weill. Singing them today is the fabulous British baritone Roderick Williams: a born communicator at the heart of a truly epic programme.

A kind of utopia that Kurt Weill created in his 1934 chanson of the same name while fleeing from the National Socialists and which is the melancholy center of this special song recital.

In 1930 Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht created a new type of grand opera, radical in both, entertainment as well as criticism. With the wit of an epic theater and the musical esprit of old and worn bar songs mixed with music of the avant-garde, Weill and Brecht built the fable of a city in paradise that finally perishes from its own utopias: in the end there is only one mortal sin left – the sin of insolvency. Together with a young ensemble, director Ulrike Schwab explores the one question: Who would still dare to dream of a better future today.

A jingle of sleighbells, a flurry of flutes…it doesn’t take much to set Mahler’s Fourth Symphony in motion. But with Mahler, even the gentlest sounds can create a universe. From playful opening to final, blissful vision of heaven, the Fourth is a musical fairy tale like no other – an enchanting finish to a concert that begins with Dorothy Howell’s fantasy of a shape-shifting serpent and Kurt Weill’s typically feisty retelling of the myth of Orpheus.

Our honorary conductor Iván Fischer is a guarantee for unusual programmes. This time, he and the Konzerthausorchester will perform works by four composers who were ostracised and persecuted by the National Socialists and whose works shaped the avant-garde of the interwar period. Paul Hindemith, Kurt Weill and Hanns Eisler found their way to the United States via detours, but Erwin Schulhoff was interned in Prague, deported and died of tuberculosis in a camp in Bavaria.

Following his appointment as the Czech Philharmonic’s newest Principal Guest Conductor and Rafael Kubelík Chair, Simon Rattle announced his plans to devote himself to both music well-known and unknown by the orchestra. This is the reason for both the music of Dvořák and Weill on this programme. With the Slavonic Dances, Rattle returns to his childhood and the start of his life as a conductor; and with The Seven Deadly Sins, he brings to the Czech Philharmonic a piece he has already performed many times during his illustrious career with major orchestras worldwide.

Whoever has money has power. And whoever doesn't will find it difficult to build a fortune. This was already the case in 1837 in London's Soho or in Brecht's Berlin - and it is no different today. Life without capitalism is no longer imaginable, and in a self-corrupting system, everything has become a commodity - love, morality, and misery. Businessmen and the police are just as criminal and devoid of morals as criminals and beggars - there is no distinction between the bourgeoisie and the crooks. The top and the bottom of society merge seamlessly into one another. What connects them is money, and good business probably justifies any immoral behavior.

Murderous antihero Mackie Messer (a.k.a. Mack the Knife) slashes through Victorian London in The Threepenny Opera, Bertolt Brecht’s scandalous satire that electrified Weimar-era German audiences 400 times in just two years after its 1928 debut.

A century later, Brecht’s razor-sharp critique of unbridled capitalism still cuts deep—an eerily prophetic vision of a well-fed society teetering on the brink, propelled by Kurt Weill’s infectious, jazz-infused score.

Barrie Kosky’s Berliner Ensemble production is sly and perversely sexy, embracing seediness and cynicism with glitzy disillusion and more than a hint of danger. A master showman, Kosky manages to beguile us through the familiar rise and fall of Brecht’s sociopathic leading man, adding a knowing creepiness to his unrepentant antics.

Love Life, the only collaboration between Kurt Weill and Alan Jay Lerner, depicts a love story that takes place over 200 years of American history, through the eyes of a family who never ages. This rarely staged production is directed by Tony winner Victoria Clark (Kimberly Akimbo) and explores the epic and intimate aspects of a marriage through a juxtaposition of heartfelt scenes and satirical vaudeville acts.

Spectacular singer and performer Meow Meow, who has been called “sensational” and a “diva of the highest order,” comes to SFCM for its first orchestra concert of the season. The Opus 3 Artist is known for her wild and collaborative stage presence. Her performance of Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht’s last collaboration before they fled Germany features a semi-staged theatrical production on the SFCM stage.

In the 20th century, the gap between art and entertainment widened. But some composers did not play along: Kurt Weill, Erwin Dressel, Erich Wolfgang Korngold and George Gershwin refused to be pigeonholed and proved on both sides of the Atlantic that sophisticated music does not have to be boring. Kurt Weill's varied orchestral works have been rediscovered in recent years, and Erwin Dressel wrote one of the few solo concertos for the jazz instrument saxophone. After his expulsion from Austria, Korngold composed almost exclusively film music, and won an Oscar for his music for the major Hollywood production "Robin Hood". Gershwin set Americans' longing for old Europe to music in a humorous way. The internationally renowned conductor Erina Yashima will be appearing for the first time at the podium of the State Philharmonic.

With one foot in the world of opera, the other in musicals, and an idealist’s belief in the power of theatre, Australian Barrie Kosky is one of today’s most sought after directors. He has the ability to draw out the pure essence of each piece and convey it radiantly to the public.

This year’s Antonín Dvořák Prize thus goes to this artist, whose masterful grasping of music extends to many of the most beautiful Czech operas: Rusalka, The Cunning Little Vixen, From the House of the Dead, and, most recently, Katya Kabanova. This latest production, conducted by Jakub Hrůša at the 2023 Salzburg Festival, has been nominated for the 2024 Gramophone Awards.

A ceremonial, elegant dance is hidden behind the name Pavane, derived from the Spanish word for peacock. Ravel's "Pavane pour une infante défunte" has become particularly famous, and the Celli Family plays it in a version for eight cellos. In addition to this elegiac, dreamy composition, the program also includes works and arrangements of a different kind. A morning full of wonderful cello sounds - the perfect start to an exciting and relaxed Sunday!

Richard Wagner’s atmospheric Prelude to his opera Lohengrin(1848) is followed by Kurt Weill’s visceral response in 1941 to the bombing of Pearl Harbour – his setting of four powerful poems by the great American poet Walt Whitman, sung by BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist James Atkinson. Weill, the German-born Jewish émigré, fled Nazi Germany in 1933 and made his home in the USA.
